Dr Adam Bonaa, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), has criticised the presentation of a token of an undisclosed amount of money to Salomey Awiti Baffoe by a delegation from the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), following her release from EOCO detention.

Salomey Awiti Baffoe, a senior nursing officer, is facing an abetment of crime charge in connection with the alleged circulation of a social media post by popular TikToker GhanaJollof, alleging an attempted coup d’etat at the presidency.

According to him, the gesture by the Association appears to encourage people to believe that they can engage in wrongdoing, face arrest and still receive public praise upon their release.

Speaking on the matter in an interview on GhanWeb’s Lowdown, Dr Bonaa said Ghana must uphold the rule of law and ensure that people face the consequences of their actions, regardless of their status or public following.

“I saw one of the nursing associations giving some reward or whatever. And I said this is how we become sycophants,” he said.

He argued that celebrating individuals in such circumstances could send the wrong message to the public and undermine efforts to build a society founded on accountability.

“… let's not do these things because then we are encouraging other people to say, even if you do it and they arrest you, and you come back, nothing will happen to you,” he added.

Dr Bonaa insisted that Salomey Awiti should be held accountable if investigations establish that she is in cahoots with GhanaJollof.

“That's my opinion, that GhanaJollof should face the consequences of her actions,” he stated.

He explained that the police and other relevant authorities must be allowed to investigate allegations and pursue the matter through the courts.

“Once you say it, you should be caught. If it is wrong, it's wrong,” he said, stressing that the legal process must take its course.
