The Paramount Chief of Essumeja, Nana Okyere Kusi Ntrama, has called on mining companies to consult traditional authorities before commencing operations on their lands.

He said involving chiefs from the outset would help mining companies reach agreements with local communities and prevent disputes that could delay their operations.

Speaking at the Mining in Motion Summit in Accra on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Nana Okyere Kusi Ntrama said proposed changes to Ghana’s mining policy could help address concerns raised by traditional leaders over access to their lands.

He stressed that mining companies must engage relevant stakeholders before beginning their activities.

He explained that land ownership in Ghana involves different parties, including the government, traditional authorities and other landowners.

“Before any mining company comes on, the traditional authorities must be consulted right from the outset,” he said.

According to him, early engagement would allow chiefs and mining companies to agree on how mining activities should be conducted.

He added that such consultations would also give traditional authorities the opportunity to identify areas of cultural significance that need protection.

Nana Okyere Kusi Ntrama said traditional leaders should also participate in discussions on employment, environmental protection and other agreements affecting their communities.

“Without us being part of the negotiation process, it becomes difficult for any mining company to settle and mine successfully,” he stated.

He welcomed the government’s efforts to address the concerns of traditional authorities, saying their involvement could improve relations between chiefs and mining companies and facilitate smoother operations.

He added that proper consultation from the beginning would help protect community interests while avoiding unnecessary obstacles to business activities.
