While an 18-year-old is legally an adult in Canada, severe statutory, regulatory, and professional boundaries strictly prohibit such a relationship.
1. Professional Misconduct & Professional Sanctions
Under the Ontario College of Teachers Act and Ontario Regulation 437/97 (Professional Misconduct):
Broad Definition of Student: The statutory definition of a "student" for professional discipline explicitly includes a student of any age enrolled in an Ontario school if the educator is one of their teachers, the principal or vice-principal, a coach, or providing school-related services.
Sexual Abuse & Misconduct Rules: Under the Student Protection Act regulations, any sexual or romantic relationship (including physical relations, sexual touching, or romantic/sexual remarks and behavior) between a registered teacher or administrator and a student constitutes sexual abuse or professional misconduct.
Consequences: The Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) maintains zero tolerance for boundary violations. A teacher or principal engaged in such a relationship faces mandatory disciplinary action, which usually includes permanent revocation of their teaching license, public listing on the discipline registry, and immediate termination of employment by the school board.
2. Power Imbalance and Consent
In professional regulatory standards, a student's age or apparent "consent" is not a defense. Educators and administrators hold an inherent position of power, trust, and authority over high school students. Because of this structural power imbalance, any romantic involvement is treated as an abuse of authority and a breach of professional ethics.
3. Potential Legal & Employment Liability
School Board Policies: All Ontario school boards (e.g., TDSB, YRDSB, PDSB) have strict codes of conduct and employment policies that forbid romantic or intimate relationships with students regardless of age. Violating these policies results in immediate firing for cause.
Criminal Law Considerations: While section 153 of the Canadian Criminal Code (Sexual Exploitation) focuses primarily on minors under 18, engaging in a romantic relationship using a position of authority, grading power, or institutional control can still expose an educator to criminal investigation or charges of sexual assault if consent is deemed compromised by exploitation.
In summary, even if the student is legally an adult (18+), any dating or romantic relationship between a high school educator/principal and a student at their school is strictly prohibited and leads to immediate dismissal and revocation of their teaching license.
