What are the effects of drinking sea water?

Drinking seawater causes severe dehydration, damages your kidneys, and can lead to organ failure and death.

Why Seawater is Dangerous:

1. Extreme Salinity: Seawater has a salt concentration of about 3.5% (roughly 35 grams of salt per liter), which is about four times saltier than human body fluids.
2.The Kidney Limitation: Human kidneys can only produce urine that is less salty than seawater. To flush out the massive amount of salt you swallow, your body has to use more water than the seawater provides.
3.Cellular Dehydration: The high salt level in your blood draws water out of your cells through osmosis to try to dilute the sodium. This shrinks and damages your cells, especially in the brain.
Drinking sea water will make you initially very thirsty and then vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, weakness, confusion, and heavy strain on the kidneys. If you continue to drink sea water you'll get hallucinations, seizures, a comatose state, and fatal organ shutdown and eventually die.

How to save yourself:
• Never drink the ocean: Do not consume raw or boiled seawater, as boiling only evaporates the water and concentrates the salt further.
• Desalination is required: Seawater must be processed through methods like reverse osmosis or distillation to remove the salt and contaminants before it is safe to drink.
• Seek fresh water: Rely only on captured rainwater, melted ice, or properly treated fresh water supplies.
So you see this young man's story is hard to swallow. He must have left something out. That's all we can say.

Gas is rather worse because they use premix fuel (petrol) to propel the outboard motor. The fishermen have used COALPOT since the inception of canoe fishing.

It’s unacceptable for our fishermen to be stranded in the ocean for 14 solid days.
They are the nation’s suppliers of fish and their safety should be seriously included in the operations and routine of the Ghana Navy.
A system should be put in place to have their Outboard-motors
checked before they set off at sea.
Ministers for Agriculture and Fisheries should act without delay and ensure that such incidents do not occur again.
14 days stranded at sea without immediate assistance and help is unacceptable.

If boiling sea water produces serious concentrated salt water, why will they boil it in the first place. Some if these fishermen are secondary School leavers, especially those from the Central and Western regions.
Fishermen are NOT THAT IGNORANT …as you guys are claiming.
Further more, almost every fisherman knows how to treat sea water into drinkable water at sea.
They do NOT only use their gas and stove for cooking food but also for providing portable water in time need.
