The coup led by Kotoko on 24th February, 1966 contributed to Ghana's retrogression in development. In February 1967, just a year after the overthrow of the Osagyefo, he regretted the incident, confessing to the NLC that, for him, he thought the coup did not serve the intended purpose because for a year, no development was added to what Nkrumah was had started. The NLC saw his comment as a betrayal of trust hence, his death in an abortive coup on 17th of April, 1967. Just a year after Nkumah's overthrow. The opponents of Nkumah named the Accra Airport after him because of his role in Nkrumah's overthrow.

This is the action of brave leadership and Ghana's international embarrassment with regard to the "Kotoka" International Airport has been erased. When the imaginary republic of western Togoland comes into being they can name their international airport after him. This is Ghana and so it was an affront to name the premier airport after a Togolese.
