These things always happen when making tabletop payments, it could even happen in a Church. It's humanly impossible to control & manage such mode of payments. I said it from the beginning of these accusations that Ablakwa Okudjeto shd had insisted on the issue of Electronic I.D Cards to the returnees with their details taken. With the I.D. Cards it was easy to make payments and monitor. Again auditing after the exercise would've been easy. The Minister would've been sitting & relaxing somewhere just calling for audit.

Should We Politicise Everything?

The opposition party conducted an investigation which reportedly revealed discrepancies between the number of people documented as having been evacuated from South Africa and the number of people who signed for the money meant for them. According to the documents provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was responsible for the evacuation exercise, some returnees received the GH₵5,000 but not the GH₵500, while others received the GH₵500 but not the GH₵5,000.

Mr. Okudzato has dismissed the allegations as baseless. However, a person has now come forward claiming that they did not receive the GH₵500. Rather than engaging in partisan arguments, shouldn't our priority be to establish the facts and ensure that every pesewa is accounted for?

The evacuation policy was laudable, and Ghana received praise for demonstrating care and concern for its citizens abroad. However, the success of that policy does not mean we should ignore possible financial irregularities. If funds intended for returnees were not delivered to them, we must establish what happened to the money and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable through the appropriate process.

**A good policy must go hand in hand with transparency and accountability.Praising the government for its efforts and demanding answers about the management of public funds are not mutually exclusive.

Let us stop turning every national issue into a political battlefield. Whether the allegations come from the opposition or any other source, they deserve to be examined objectively. If the records are accurate, the discrepancies must be explained. If the allegations are unfounded, the evidence should establish that too.

At the end of the day, this is not about the NPP or the NDC. It is about the Ghanaian returnees who were supposed to receive this money and the responsibility to account for public funds.

Every pesewa matters. Accountability should never be a partisan issue
