Joseph Bukari Nikpe is the Transport Minister
The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has disclosed that a task force established to revive Ghana’s national airline is close to completing its work as the government seeks to restore the country’s presence in the aviation industry.
He said Ghana could not continue investing in airport infrastructure without having a national airline to help transport passengers and support economic activities.

Speaking at the inaugural flight ceremony of Uganda Airlines at Accra International Airport on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Nikpe said the task force was expected to complete its work soon.
“His Excellency the President is thinking that we cannot have beautiful airports and connect our airports to other airports without participating in the aviation industry or flying people,” he said.
The Minister explained that President John Dramani Mahama established the task force last year to develop plans for reviving Ghana’s national airline following the liquidation of Ghana Airways.
He said restoring a national carrier would help connect production centres to markets, improve access to tourist destinations and facilitate travel for business purposes.
Nikpe also disclosed that the government was constructing three domestic airports in Sunyani, Wa and Bolgatanga as part of efforts to improve air connectivity within the country.
“This year alone, under the Ministry of Transport, we and Ghana Airports Company and all our stakeholders are constructing three domestic airports, one in Sunyani, one in Wa and the other one in Bolgatanga, so that we will encourage domestic air travel,” he said.
He said the government was committed to positioning Accra as a major aviation hub in West Africa, adding that investments in airports and other aviation infrastructure would yield greater benefits if airlines connected Ghana to more destinations.
Nikpe said Ghana was ready to work with Uganda Airlines and other operators to improve air connectivity, stressing that a stronger aviation sector would support trade, tourism and economic growth.
