President John Dramani Mahama has made an appeal for Ethiopia to be awarded the hosting rights for the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
During a tour of Ethiopia’s stadium facilities, President Mahama commended the country’s impressive sports infrastructure, describing it as deserving of recognition.
He said it was time for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and other stakeholders responsible for awarding hosting rights to give Ethiopia serious consideration.

President Mahama made the remarks during an inspection attended by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and other African leaders participating in the 12th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa.
“This is a very impressive stadium, a 52,000-capacity stadium, and it’s CAF-certified already, and we know that Ethiopia is putting in a bid for the African Cup of Nations 2028,” Mahama said.
“Ethiopia hasn’t hosted it for a very long time, so I think it’s only fair that they should be allowed to do that, but the facilities are impressive, and I think that Ethiopia is ready to host a successful tournament,” he added.
CAF has yet to begin the process of selecting the host country for the 2028 AFCON.
