A woman who took in an abandoned baby girl when she was just two months old and has cared for her for the past year is seeking a solution to a difficult situation following her discovery of the child's biological family.

According to the woman, she found the baby abandoned behind a salon and out of compassion, took her home and assumed responsibility for her care.

She said that over the past year, she had made efforts to trace the child's family and had eventually managed to locate her biological mother and grandmother.

However, after reuniting the child with her family, the woman said she requested reimbursement for the money she had spent on the girl's upkeep over the past year before handing her over.

She explained that she subsequently reported the matter to the Social Welfare Department, where an agreement was reportedly reached for the family to compensate her for the expenses incurred while caring for the child.

However, she said the arrangement had hit a setback after the family allegedly indicated that they did not have the money to reimburse her.

According to her, the child's family further suggested that she either return the girl to the place where she found her or continue raising her with her own resources, insisting that the child would eventually find her way back to them when she grew older.

Recounting her experience, she said, “So we went to Social Welfare, and they said the family should pay me. But the woman said she has given birth to many children and that they do not want this child. So, it is either I throw her away again where I found her or raise her with my own money, and the child will still find her way back home when she grows up. So, I have come here for a solution.”

Confused about what to do next, the woman has once again turned to Oyerepa Afutuo, a live television programme on Oyerepa TV that addresses domestic and family-related disputes, to seek assistance.

Excerpts from the programme have since been shared on social media, drawing attention to her predicament and the circumstances surrounding the abandoned child.
