The Military is the only institution that is on its own without depending on any government agency. It has its own communication set up …the signal battalion so is not under Sam George’s ministry. It has its own police force, the military police that takes care of issues of misbehavior. It has its own legal and court system and is not under the Attorney General until a serious criminal case comes up with a military personnel. And even with that the Attorney General seeks clearance of arrest from theMilitary High Command. They are not paid by the Accountant General but the Forces Pay Office. They have their own Foreign Affairs department and they provide senior military officers to various High Commissions and Embassies as Military Attaches. They have their own Education Ministry and their own Health Ministry Set and do not depend on on the Ministry of Health or the Ministry of Education for anything relating to health and education of troops and their families.
The military was set up in this way in order to be independent from the control of the civil structure of government. So government appointees like ministers, DCE/MCE, CEO’s should be given this orientation about the military set up so that no one gets up one day to think by his or her position in government, they could indirectly control the military. Sam George risks being beaten one more time, this time, by the military publicly like the infamous Ayawaso episode unless he renders a public apology for his unrealistic provocation and denigration of a military officer in particular and the military in general.
If he doesn’t know, he should understand from now that it’s not for nothing that the commission of military officer cadets into the Ghana Armed Forces is ONLY done by the President or the Head of State and not even the Vice President.
Folks be advised that the military doesn’t go on demonstrations. Its demonstration often ends up destabilizing the governance set up, and so politicians should always be careful having a direct confrontation with either the military command or a section of it.
If I were the President I would either fire Sam George for his impertinent behavior or cause him to go to the Burma Camp and offer a formal apology to the Officer and the Ghana Armed Forces. Otherwise, the next unfortunate head on encounter with the soldiers and a section of the civilians will be bloody due to Sam George’s intransigence.
And my caution to the Minister of Defence and the CDS, pls don’t weaken the morale of the troops you command by ceding to Sam George’s demands. The two of you will certainly lose your respect and decorum among the troops. The CDS in particular, will be the loser for bowing to pressure from civil Sam George. As it stands now, no member of the military platoon that went on the operation should be punished publicly or otherwise even if their actions are seen to be overboard. Else it will certainly be seen as the Military High Command bowing to pressure from civil Sam George, the politician. Any such punishment will have been acceptable if Sam George had not resorted to his public tantrums but had done it quietly through his colleague Minister for Defence.
