JSS/SSS vs OLD SCHOOL SYSTEM
I don't know what is wrong with these Ghanaian pastors that all of a sudden they want to be so political in their submission.
Heward-Mills might have good intentions, but he seems to lack prerequisite knowledge in some of the public issue that we want to delve into...
The old common entrance or old level system did not ensure equal education to all nor the greater academic population. It would be remembered that in those days, it was just a handful of qualifying students made it our universities. It was also a system to loose that even pupil from a wealthy family who attend prestigious elementary schools can sit for the common entrance as early as class 3 or 4 or at the age of 10 or 11 while students/pupil(s) from less privileged homes would have to go through the longer process by way of primary, elementary (form 1 thru 4), technical or trade school, to secondary schools and then to university if they were deem qualified....by that time some of them are pretty much enough to be parents as they are in their twenties and sharing desks with ten or twelve year olds from more privilege backgrounds.
and most of these students from less fortunate backgrounds usually drop out along the way.
The current JSS/SSS system guarantees that more and more student or young people get equal exposure to different careers and field of study, be it technical or liberal arts or the sciences thereby (hopefully) identifying their passions or at least strengths and weaknesses before making their informed choices or decisions regarding higher education or respective careers.
Also, JSS/SSS or the JHS/SHS is very much responsible for the incredible number of young people that are now acquiring higher education...college/university education to be exact.
what is needed, however, is greater improvement in the quality of education and infrastructure across board all over the country, so that all the students are meeting the high standard of education that is expected of them....
Left to the old liberal arts and sciences based system, only a handful of the youth would even aspire towards higher education.
so much as these pastors want to PREACH POLITICS these days, they should do their homework first before try to impose their pulpit authority on us....

Dear Presiding Bishop of the Lighthouse Chapel International, Bishop Dag Heward –Mills, I am not too sure if the sermon you delivered was properly reported! I am at a loss if reverting to the GCE “O” and “A” level will result in achieving a better or higher standard of education?
You identified the reasons of the falling standard to “the attitude of some corrupt and disloyal officials at the helm of affairs in the education sector”. So if we revert to the old system and the attitude of some corrupt and disloyal officials at the helm of affairs in the education sector still remains , will that change the fall standard of education? Something is seriously wrong somewhere! Was your sermon rightly reported or ………..!

Ever since I learnt about the JSS & SSS educational system mumbo jumbo n Ghana, I said to myself that "our educational quality would be badly watered down." Our students need MORE not LESS years of schooling.
And Lo & Behold, the chickens of that observation are coming home to roost. HERE IS THE DAMN PROBLEM:
We in Ghana, as well as some other African countries, use either ENGLISH or FRENCH as the official instructional language. But, language is a complete subject by itself that must be MASTERED well to use to study other subjects. As we all know, not everybody is good in reading, speaking and, especially, writing the English language. Go to Ghana’s parliament and the evidence would be staring at you. Some MPs can’t write or speak well in parliament, so they’ don’t OPEN their mouths at all. They sit through deliberations only to collect their salaries at the end of the month. Even some of our journalists write BAD English.
Therefore, since we can't discontinue using "somebody's language to study”, we certainly need extra few years to be proficient in other subjects like Maths, Science (biology, chemistry, physics, etc), Engineering, Medicine, Finance, Accounting, Management, etc.
After all, does the Ghanaian economy have JOBS for these "half-baked" graduates from SSS or they get well prepared for university education—either home or abroad? The discussion has nothing to do with "old vs. young people", but rather the best way to produce really well educated people for our development.
Check this out, folks:
Now in the 21st century, Ghana still can't make machines to manufacture NEEDLES, SOCKS, SCISSORS, WATCHES, PAPER CLIPS, TELEPHONES, RADIOS, even "TOOTH PICKS" , etc., etc., and you want to graduate students prematurely? That wouldn't help our economic development, because they graduate with large, but empty heads. SO, LISTEN TO THE BISHOP and other advocates for the old “O & A level system.”

DAG HEWARD MILLS SHOULD MAKE HIS POINT CLEAR. IS HE CONCERNED ABOUT THE CONTENT AND SYLLABUS OF THE NEW SYSTEM OR HE IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE NAME AND THE EXAMINING BODY. IF I GOT HIM RIGHT HE SAID THE EXAMS BODY OF THE "O" AND "A" LEVELS SHOULD BE FROM LONDON/UK. YOU CALL YOUR CHURCH CHARISMATIC AND INTERNATIONAL, OTHERS LOCAL AND TRADITIONAL OR ORIGINAL ETC BUT IT IS ALL ABOUT WHAT YOU LEARN OR GET SHAPED FROM THESE CHURCHES. YOUR IS THE NEW ONE WHICH IS NOT WITHOUT PROBLEMS: THEFT, ACCOUNTABILITY PROBLEMS, SOCIAL MISCONDUCTS INCLUDING SEX SCANDALS ETC BUT NO NOE IS BASING ON THOSE FACTS TO SAY LET US GO BACK TO THE OLD SYSTEM OF WORSHIP. OR YOU WANT US TO ALL GO BACK TO THE OLD SYSTEMS? ie CATHOLIC, PRESBYTERIAN, METHODIST, LUTHERAN, ANGLICAN, ETC ETC. But instead of upgrading the public school sector popularly known as "cyto" the spiteful, vindictive and perhaps ignorant PNDC government dumbed our precious educational system to what we have today and those in power in true Animal Farm fashion made sure their children did not go through the JSS educational system. The Bishop is making a very important point here. Without the principle of fair and equitable distribution of income, most Ghanaians now in the elite class, would not have made it. Today, several persons from that category, steal public wealth with impunity, block access to education for underprivileged but potentially gifted children. The challenge is upon the electorate to let the elected, and indeed all who aspire to political power, to realize that through gaining power they become custodians of the public wealth, not sultans born into power with the aim of using the very wealth which is the people's, to oppress, suppress and repress the people. This principle is no respecter of persons, and goes across the political divide. God bless Ghana!

In my days, when I attempted my first Common Entrance examination, there was a question in the English Paper about 'television', but unfortunately for me, I had never watched a television programme before then, so naturally, I did not receive a results slip for that exam! If this report is right, then it is clear Bishop (Dr) Heward Mills is confused and completely ignorant of the affairs of national government, governance, the role of government and parties. M? advice to you Dag is this: please stick to your chosen vocation - preaching the Word, evangelism, building churches and expanding Christianity. you seem have done well in that regard. PLEASE HEED THIS ADVICE FROM A CLASS MATE.
Since when we're to O and A levels you and I did administered from London? There was a body called WAEC and by the way for your information, even in Britain they moved to GCSEs and A Level and the standard of education has fallen so badly, government ministers are calling for the UK to go back to the old system. I agree with you that educational standards have fallen badly in Ghana but the reasons for this are numerous, including lack of investment and poorly trained and I'll-equipped teachers etc. if you want to tackle the subject, you need to make sure you have all the details.
What do you mean by government shou
D give 30% of business contracts to the opposition? I thought contracts were worn via tender etc. if there is corruption in the award of contracts and you want to talk about that, fine but what sense does it make for a government to be dishing out contracts just to make people happy?
And you seem think that it is the responsibility of government to make people prosperous! I thought you used to preach prosperity to your congregation? You see the affairs of government and governance are different from preaching from the pulpit. I also advice you and your fellow pastors to spend some time studying the life, times and work of Christ properly and that of Aposltes like Paul. May be you will learn something about how you should be contributing to the society.
By all means contribute to national debates and dialogue but be wise and careful in your choice of pronouncements as they can mislead and also allow others to attack and condemn the otherwise good work that you are doing.

The JSS/SSS/ system was introduced by an illegal, so-called revolutionay government of the PNDC, made up mainly of people who never had any education themseleves. The stupid thinking then was to produce more carpenters, barbers, hairdressers and all sorts of artisans consistent with our economy. Then they forced it down the throats of citizens without any free discusiions. Those who suggested anything otherwise were referred to as enemies of some stupid revolution. Twenty years after the JSS/SHS, there is no research or report to assess performance and relevance.

You see, the British education system is backed by natural justice with the support of a conceptual framework. On the other hand what we are doing in Ghana is a big joke. Even the apostle who introduced the system to Ghana was not comfortable with the failure that followed its implementation and had to send his children to the UK to acquire the O and A levels. Even the Nigerians who introduced us to this current system of education through Gen. Babangida are saying the WASSSCE is equivalent to the O'Level but in Ghana the National Accreditation Board (NAB) say it is equivalent to the A'Level. Secondly, the National Certificate of Education(NCE) from Nigeria is higher than the HND from Ghana according to the NAB but in Nigeria that certificate is an admission requirement for the HND. This is the reason why a lot of unqualified Nigerians are rushing into Ghana to school because over there some of them who may not even qualify to go near a university or polytechnic fence are in Ghana and they are offered lucrative programs at the detriment of our compatriots. My problem is that if we go back to the old system we may not get teachers to teach the A level because our current crop of university graduates are useless.

Please note that in Britain, they writ the GCSE which is General certificate for secondary education which in fact is a watered down version of the IGCSE, yet they claim it's the same. check cie.org.uk

Dear Pastor,
Thanks a lot for voicing your opinion. others will stay mute because they do not want to be branded in partisan political colours.
However, it is my privilege to say your position and explanation is woefully inadequate and provides no analytical insight.
First of all, you must critically analyse the situation prior to the introduction of new educational system and its focus. You must also compare cost outlay of the two systems. You must also analyse both effectiveness and efficient to come to a conclusion. Just to say there was no leakages of examination papers during the O and A levels era is myopic and "street talk". Please, get me right I am saying we should or should not introduce the old System. We need more analysis than want you have just put up. It simply does not make sense.
On the ward of contracts to the opposition. Sincerely, I am shocked you are trying to encourage ward of contract not base on competency rather political affiliation. We do not give contract because one is NPP or NDC. We give out because you had a superior bid or proposal. I do not know whether you are saying politicians should create and share contracts. What happens to us who are contractors and business people who are not affiliated to any political party.
May be your thought were not reported by the press as it is supposed to be. If it is so I am very sorry for putting my opinion in this way.Possible you may be referring to a union government of a sort.
People of high repute should thorough think through issues before they make pronouncements.

I respect Dag a lot but I think he is missing the point on this. Times have changed. Its not about which system is better. In the olden days teachers are not so interested in more more or extra classes just as the pastors then werent interested in more programs for more money. If we bring back the O level and A levels the humans who are tasked to run them will not be very different from those running the system now. Dag is nostalgic and frankly speaking is not fully abreast with the times. Take the basic education as an example, a government school is making at least 800 cedis a month compared to a private school teacher making an average of 200 yet the kids in the private schools are doing so much better than those in government school. My final submission is that its time the good bishop also begin to invest part of his resources into the education system.

The question isn't going back to the old system, neither is it holding on relentlessly to what we already have.
The sane thing to do, in my opinion, is to come together as one nation and respond as one people to how we are going to give our children the best education money can buy.
We have failed over the years to revise our moribund curriculum, affirm how teachers teach, how our children learn, how we evaluate what our students have mastered or learned, and failed beyond belief to clarify the role we expect our parents and community members to play in the education of our children.
The world changed unrecognizably while we slept during the 70's and the 90's, we have to find ways to catch up.
We can do it with a restructured and reformed education system. The earlier we do it the better.

One wonder if this Bishop man is informed about educational issues in Ghana. The challenge with quality education in Ghana has nothing to do with the abolishing of the '0' and 'A' Level system. There is no justification, therefore, for Heward-Mills to call for the abolishing of the new system. Our problem is attitudinal. Why is it that Private school sthat operate the same new system perform excellently compared to Public Schools? It is purely attitudinal. This means that even if it were justifiable for the nation to revert to the old system, the abscence of right attitudes would still make the system challenging. Is the Bishop saying that those who sell question papers in the current system will chanmge their attitude if we reverse to the old system. Please, BISHOP, give us a break. What does he know about education? He should concentrate on his church and leave education to educationists and politicians to handle.
What studies has he done to show that the previous system of education was better than what we have now? No we are in an era where we do not talk by heart. I recall that students of the new system performed better in an admission interview to medical school at knust in the early 1990s. We have products of the new system who are medical doctors, pharmacists, chartered accountants, teachers, librarians, bankers to mention but few who are performing very well in their chosen professions.
Mills should come out with the research he has carried out that confirms his assertion. He should not talk by heart.

wishful thinking. How do we know that the same irregularities are not going to occur if we go back to O and A level examination sytem?.As far as I can remember, this behaviour of leaked exam papers have always been there. This started during CPP days, when girl friends of politicians were carted to colleges, even if they did not pass the entrance exam.Men teachers were the culprits in colleges as they always have access to exam papers and then the girl friends. In short Ghana's standard of Education and morality has gone down the drain and I wonder which government will be able to salvage it. I am glad that someone has brought this topic to discussion and lets hope that something can be done about it.It is not the particular system which is pulling the standard of Education down, but the people who work in it.-from those at the ministry of Education to teachers up and down the country. Whilst N>U.T is there to fight for the welfare of the teachers, in other countries they also fight for the welfare of the children and the standard of Education.

As a student(old system) I witnessed the introduction of the JSS and SSS system. The rationale behind it is very good.Reverting to the old system is not the solution. Infact, the USA also uses the same junior high and senior concept and they have the best universities in the world. We do not need the British exams board to supervise our exams .More than 50yrs after independence we should be able to do better. The U.K is even moving away from the grammer style education which the old system offers with no emphasis on critical thinking but memorization. We should rather as a nation put in place the best checks and balances to protect the integrity of our exams. For your information, the SSS students are performing better than the old system in comparism at the university.

Thank you thank you thank you. Now, I am so glad someone is thinking, a better thinker than all our politicians, Atta Mills and Mahama included. Present so call leaders have no "VISION" only money concious and greedy to make themslves rich and wealthy thieves at the expence of mother Ghana. Ghana was more disciplined when we had the "O' and "A" level school systems, academics were good, children read a lot, our libraries where filled up, our sports was so great, exciting, fun and moreover glorious. We talk about our sportsmen with pride, but now look at what we have riff-raffs, delinquencies, armed robbers, lost of other bad social entities. Wake up Ghana and bring back the old school system and that will salvage the homeland otherwise nothing will work and make things worthwile.

Wisdom is justified by its children. If you look at our nation today it is easy to see the fruit of the wisdom of our leaders. Clogged universities, a broken and a corrupt education system that is not respected in the world, a generation of people who have to lie or prostitute themselves in order to make ends meet. And if a man of God is rising up to address the issue by preaching to the nation to change, the empty vessels and fools amongst us are rising up to call him a drug addict and wee smoker. You who are calling him names what is the fruit of wisdom in your life? What have you been able to do? Do you not have to bribe people to get services which are supposed to be free? Have you not suffered from the rife kalabule yourself? So why don't you take the part of the message that applies to you and change? Why insult a man of God? By righteousness a nation is exalted. He has preached a timely and relevant message and perhaps the reason you are so incensed is because it is touching things in you. So change! That's all..
