Guys, could somebody please straighten me out on this? I'm one of the "O & A Levels" bovine group in the good old days. But, with the introduction of the JHS and SHS systems in recent times, could SHS students "re-take" the exams in the event they get bad grades in the first and/or second attempt?

With the "O & A levels", students who couldn't pass well could register and re-take the exams as "PRIVATE STUDENTS." Does that still work for the SSS mumbo jumbo? Quite recently, a friend’s relative sent me her results from the 2012 SHS WAEC examinations—seeking some kind of help from me. That girl didn't do well at all. Her results profile: 1 Excellent; 2 Very Goods and 5 Credits. Each subject has a "letter and a suffix number" and are these the numbers used to compute aggregates? If that’s the case, then girlfriend is in some trouble.

Call me old fashioned, who cares, but the O & A levels not only prepared students well enough for careers and advanced studies, but also could be easily understood, aggregates computed and failing students could dust themselves up, cry a little bit, eat a little bit and register to re-take the exams as private students.
However, my major beef with the current system is the lack of adequate study time (years) to sufficiently prepare our students to COMPETE with others in today's highly competitive international marketplace. The half-baked and ill-prepared students that the new system may be producing may not pass the snuff test on the international stage. The Bishop may be a little too wild, but the central thesis of his argument is damn sound!!

Though there are problems with the JSS/SSS system the biggest problem with education in Ghana is higher education which completely ingores critical reasoning, problem solving, and analytical skills. Thses is the backbone of the Western and Asian educational system.

As it stands now a high school graduate in the US can reason better that a masters holder from a Ghanaian university when it comes to problem solving issues. The Ghanaian can speak big English that the Queen of England no longer uses. Quote formulas that are of no use to any one, memorize theories and big names etc.

These are the reasons we have so many problems in Ghana though we have millions of graduates every year unfit for the job market.

Advocating for a change back to "O and A" levels equate to re arranging the deck chairs on the ship.The true problems with our education system is many folds and unless they are addressed forcibly then we will continue to produce the mediocre results.Name change will not the problem. Focus: Poorly trained teachers and under paid, equip schools to match the minimum accepted standards in Singapore or Korea, better accomodation with basic essentials for teachers in rural areas.Better nutrition for both teachers and students.

To all you fools out there insulting the man of God.If you could take anything he says and work with even one,most of you will not be enslaving or struggling.Some of us would have been armed thieves especially me but through his teachings and his obedience to the call of God,I am an independent owner of a company in the USA not in Ghana with employees.By the way give me a figure as how much you claim are tax payers money used to educate the doctors.You only need a doctor if you have an ailment but you need a pastor either way so think about it.The services provided outweighs what a doctor medication prescription does.Hardly did I went to a doctor when I was in Ghana.But guess
what, I needed God and Christ in my life and I got it from his teaching and the other pastors.The church took care of me when I was out of money in the U.S till I got a job.I did not call a doctor's office for help but I did called the pastor and I got the help that I needed. Until some of you critics travel,you will not know how good it is to have a church with a lot of branches world wide.Our embassies do not even pick phone calls but churches doors are always open.

We like our "poor" education system than to become slaves under a superior British system.

To be honest, the British system is not good for us. It has very little relevance to our needs. Our ideal system is a mix of German and Scandinavian systems that has strong emphasis on intermediate and advanced vocational degrees of any type. Too much of reading and writing based education we have now and have had since 1957

Well said.But let me tell you that exams in foreign countries are very easy to write than what you see in Ghana.In many instances questions are given to students to study in advance.What they are taught is what they write exams on.You will hardly see a student failing in an exam.To me ghana's system is too strict and a hindrance to the progress of many talented students.It would be very helpful if they ease the system to help people pass whatever exams they take.It is far better we focus more on the understanding of what we learn and to put it into practice.Exams is good but people should not think that only those who pass exams are clever.Many clever people can fail in exams too.After all its only about three hours for the exam.Let us learn to put away the fear developed for exams.It should be something normal and as a usual classroom work.

Changes occur always with the hope of making it better. I have problems with the duration and curricular of JHS/SHS in its present form. To blame corruption of the educational system on JHS/SHS is unfortunate. Corruption is part of every aspect of our Ghanaian fabric. From the Churches,to those in government positions to the common person on the streets. We measure a person's worth to our nation by that person's material possessions. We accept things as the way they are instead of the way they should be. There is a lot of apathy. "The price of apathy towards public affairs is to be ruled by evil men" -Plato

You are also asking the govt. to carry out its promises, with whose money. Can you just pay taxes on the money the JSS and SS thieves give you every Sunday so the govt. can generate enough revenue?

I teach in a high-profile school in Ghana. I wanted to help a former student to make ends meet by tasking him to do small things such as grading small quizzes (with marking scheme of course). One time I went outside for a short time. When I came back something asked me to check my computer's sent mail. There I discovered that this boy had used my email (which was open) to send a EXAM paper to him. I frantically took steps to re-write a new exam because I knew that exam had been compromised.
Now how could I ever extricate myself that I did NOT send that paper to anybody when it was there, in black and white" that the mail emanated from my personal email?

When I challenged him after the exam he disappeared to this day. And I am left wondering "How long had this been going on?"
Morale: You can't trust anybody especially GHANIANS.

I think it is high time this man was told in the face that if he has nothing to say, he must keep quiet. He has said so many things in recent times and those utterances easily expose him as a sympathizer of the NPP who is damned pissed off because his party did not win. Nobody begrudges him for being with the NPP. WHAT IRKS SOME OF US IS THIS HOLIER THAN THOU POSTURES THAT THESE MEN TAKE AND MASQUERADING AS MEN OF GOD SPEW OUT SUCH GIBBERISH. Firstly he said 30% of contracts should be given to the NPP sympathizes so as to bring about peace. Who said it is only when NPP men are given contracts that peace could be attained? Is that a divine right for the NPP apparatchiks or what? Alll of a sudden everything being done in Ghana by the NDC is wrong? what is this!!! He then chastised Prez Mahama even before he took over as the president that he must keep all his promises and learn to serve and all. Now it is JHS and SHS which is bogus and churning out thieves who took part in the recent supposed padding of figures in the elections. Was the SHS introduced by electoral commission or the NDC? How can a supposed man of God talk like this? I wish he could keep quiet so that we could keep the little respect remaining for the supposed men of God with us.

I like this piece from the great man 0f God. However, I want to state some corrections. That "He said when he was in school and wrote ‘O’ Level and ‘A’ Level, there was nothing like leakage of questions or faking of examination results, but the JHS and SHS system has made it easy for questions to leak and for exams results to be faked." i beg to differ right there. This leakage started way back in the '80's. I quiet remember the whole O'level results had to be cancelled in 1983 because of leakage.
To be honest, the man of God is right in stating and extrapolating these leakage to the brood of citizens we ar producing as a country. Look at what is happening to our 'great' law school, look at the type of medical doctors we are producing who value money more than life though they said the Hippocratic Oath.
It is time we actually revamp our educational system not only because of this 'apo' leakage butthe fact that one of the greatest resource of any nation is its people. Any great nation became great not only because of any other thing but a committed people who had the nation at heart. In any case, I will commend the man of God for his desire to see the country the way we all want for our country. God bless you.

Come to think of all that he has said ,are the parents who pay good money for their wards JHS and SHS products.Is it the system that is a failure or the exams body, can we put the educational body and exams body apar in this instance.Which country in the world is running 6yrs primary, 4yrs middle, 5yrs 'O'level and 2yrs'A'level.in modern times? Gone were the days when people complected 'O'level at age 32.Do we have to write British exams to make us faithful, can we then change the name of our country too?
What is the role of the church in nation building? what role do ordinary members in your church play, can you rememeber the names of 5 of them? no but what of the tycoons hahahaaa. These days men of God measure their God's blessing by their personal belongings, so what of the church members? how do they make thousand of cedis they pay as tithes, offerings,special levies, pastors appreciations. In Acts 4:32-36 believers share their possessions, in our modern day christinity the poor has no share in anything of the church all and other things will make people steal to please the men of God, but are men of God able to tell in the face they won't accept their offers. If you loved him, you will correct him, and not urge him on. You reall never like him. He must tame his tongue when speaking to the public, except he is willing to be responsible for the outcome of his words. He must be taken for questioning and to provide evidence for his assertion that there was unfaithfulness in the 2012 elections. Dont follow blindly. I wonder why these bishops would not give our nostrils and eardrums a brake for us to breathe well and listen to better sermons. Is he peeved because Nana Addo couldn't make it?
I asked because he made reference some products of the JHS and SHS being instruments used to rig the just ended elections and quickly tries to hide under his right to give his opinion under UN Human Rights Chatter. This guy is confused and does not know anything about Education not to talk about the journey of educational reform. Does he think reforms come just over night? He should go back to read the trends in Ghana's education to know how the reform came about. Prior to 1987 when it was introduced, the need for it was badly needed as a nation striving to succeed knowing its destiny lies in its own hands and not in the hands of other countries.
Listen to his confused topic for the sermon he delivered in which he made this infantile call and condemnation. His topic was 'LOYALTY and FAITHFULNESS'. How on earth does he expect Ghanaians to be faithful and loyal to their country Ghana if they have to go back to the system of England as I quoted him above?
His myopic brain is just focused on the academic aspect of education not the values and skills aspects that should take their roots from Ghanaian point of view before going global which is the training most of the students get in tertiary education.
Which empirical research evidence gave him the result that WAEC cheats and his alleged use of JHS and SHS students to rig the elections?

What we should be looking at are the facts; do we have a good educational system? what kind of morals prevail in today's Ghana. Most of them are not creative and don't have the intelligence how to impart the material across. Bottom line is the "O'and "A" level syatems gave us all a better foundation as the number of years and the seniors guidance, you find yourself and the direction you plan to go. More over you learn what's right or wrong and you tend to be senior over another freshmen or juniors to impart some knowlegde and help them grow/grooming them. Majority of teachers are degrees holders/or higher education aspirants who inspire us to do good and march forward. we read books, shakepeare, African series, novels, Robert Ludlum, etc you name it. We had good access to libraries and able to check books out read and return. It was an amazing times, but now look at the system, school kids can not even read the newpapers, local magazines, they can't even comprehend what they are reading. The system is not condusive at this age and needs to be revamped. Look at Jamaica, they still have the same school system, the British System and they have florished, even in sports(track and field)with a population of only 3 million. Ghana 25million plus and we are lost and filled with corruptions, armed robbery, bribe taking police officers why??? So all of you on this website look at the other side of the reasoning and stop accusing blindly.

I can assure you, going back to an old system, or even creating a new one would not solve the problem of leakage. We need to employ high security systems to ensure leakages don't happen.
On the point of lebanese shop owners employing people from their family as managers has nothing to do with honesty of the Ghanaian. Firstly, these are family business, so you would expect family members to run the business. This is not a practice just common to Lebanese. Ghana has its problems, and we would have to make a start somewhere to try and solve these problems. But we have to look at these problems objectively and practically, and come up with practical solutions to take the nation forward.

It was the same WAEC which conducted the O and A Levels and there were times when exams had to be rescheduled because of leakages. It is sad to condemn an entire system as bogus. What doe he mean by the use of those words?
