According to top NDC sources, at least $180m (nearly GHC350m) was spent on the 2012 campaign by President Mahama and the NDC from the centre. It is by a huge margin, the most expensive campaign ever ran in this country and relatively even more so than what incumbents spend in larger and richer Nigeria. Our investigations show that a chunk of the money was disbursed in November from the Ministry of Finance for unbudgeted expenditure, including the payments to rlg for distribution of laptops embossed with President Mahama’s campaign pictures. The organisations that were used for this unprecedented vote buying spree included LESDEP, SADA, rlg, NADMO, Zoomlion, as well as some chiefs.

Sources at the Ministry of Finance believe most of the money disbursed close to the election was laundered through the organisations and ended up in the campaign coffers of the NDC.

According to a ‘rigging’ document cited by the New Statesman before the election, the NDC targeted 180 constituencies where they bribed officials of the Electoral Commission, and even some agents of the NPP, with various sums of money. In the Volta Region, parts of Central, Western, Brong-Ahafo and the three northern regions, over GHC80m was spent directly to buy votes. In the Upper West, voters were given GHC50 as they stood in the queue to vote. In the Volta Region, especially some places in the Ketu South and North Dayi constituencies, as much as GHC100 per head was paid. The overall strategy was to target households and between GHC200-600 was paid per household, an amount which seemed like manna from heaven for many poor families. Truck load of motorbikes, bicycles, outboard motors, sewing machines, rice, cloth, laptops and phones followed NDC campaign vehicles as the ruling party invaded communities in target areas buying votes.

Some parliamentary candidates, for example in the Nzema areas, were seen distributing monies themselves.

SADA distributed tractors a few days before election; rlg, which received GHC100m in the last few weeks of the campaign, gave out free laptops with pictures of the president. The unit price per these laptops remains known to only a few.

I cannot see how Justice Atugubah should really be part of the panel to hear the joinder application sent by the National Democratic acaongress (NDC), especially when Dr Raymond Atuguba, who is related to the Justice Atuguba, is Executive Secretary to President Mahma who is being sued over electoral malpractice together with the electoral commission. it is widely held view among legal brains that there will be likelihood of bias against Nana Akufo Addo and the NPP if Justice Atuguba should sit on such a high profile case affecting the rights of millions in Ghana and the interests of Africa and the whole world!!

But what I find more perplexing is whether or not the CJ,who empanelled all these Justices was not aware of the backgrounds of all these individuals,but chose to include them on the panel? You see, the camouflage and concealment that was attempted her is no lost anyone! And oh, who do you find complaining about Justice Atuguba, and only Atuguba? Nii Titus-Glover(from NPP), and the Akufo Addo
legal team that is essentially fighting an NPP battle. We should all thank Nii Titus-Glover for exercising his 'immunity privileges' as an NPP,to shed light on some of the goings-on within our judiciary?

Please let us see things in their right perspectives.

1. Justice William Atubugah is related to Dr Raymond Atubuga who was recently appointed Executive Secretary to President Mahama. Therefore his cousin Justice Atuguba could be influenced by that relationship as well as by the current position that Dr Raymond Atuguba enjoys at the seat of the presidency.

2. Unlike Justice Atuguba and Dr Raymond Atuguba, I do not see any of the Justices on the panel as related to Nana Akufo Addo and would therefore be suspected of any bias to ths cause of Nana Akufo Addo.

3. Even more disturbing is the fact that during the elections Dr Raymond Atugubah joined President Mahama in demanding that those who were not verified should vote. And this Dr Raymond Atugubah is related to Justice Atuguba.

4. It is therefore irreristably reasonable to suspect that Justice Atuguba will be biased to the cause of his cousin who compromised himself during the election and who now enjoys the position of Executive Secretary at the Presidency. One may ask -- was this position a reward for siding with President Mahama that unverified voters should be allowed to vote as against rules set by the Electoral Commissioner and all the Political Parties to govern the elections?

We may also have to note the following:

a. The other justices menitoned in your article, are not relatives of Nana Akufo Addo who is suing. Neither are they related to Dr Mahmadu Bawumia, or Jake Obesteby - Lamptey who are suing together with Nana Akufo Addo, as Vice Presidential candidate and NPP Chairman respectively.

b. Justice Atuguba is related, as it were, to Dr Raymond Atugubah who compromised hmself during the elections that unverified voters should be allowed to vote, a view he shared with President Mahama and he is now his Executive Secretary.

c. This position and interest, directly also linked to the interests of President Mahma, should not be overlooked by reason of this affinal relationship with Justice Wiliam Atuguba.

d.The issue of voter verification is a contention among the many issues being raised in the election petititon before the Supreme Court. President Mahama and Dr Atuguba were for this, as against the will of the Electoral Commissioner and all Political Parties in the conduct of the elections.

In my honest view, although all the justices on the panel may have their political views and interests which should not colour their judgements, there is every reason to demand that Justice William Atuguba should recuse himself from this high profile case in view of his relationship with Dr Raymond Atuguba and the link between Dr Raymond Atuguba and President Mahama.

And you don`t believe,and heavens forbid,that if say Owusu Afriyie found himself on the bench(SC or HC),a real possibilty exists that he, unlike a Jurist of Js Atuguba`s caliber would be baised in the way he sees things? Look at how he(Sir John) treated ex-Pres Kuffour in the recent matter of K4 attending the inauguration brouhaha? Mr. Kuffour has indicated publicly that he was given a special exemption from the NPP boycott 'order',but what did Sir John tell the whole world when he was interviewed on the matter? And then on the topic of compromising oneself,what did Jake and other high ranking NPP officials not say about the conduct of the election[s],only to reverse their stand when they realized their side had lost badly?
I am glad the 'loose' tongues of people like Nii Titus-Glover has unravelled the the 'trump card' the NPP was banking its hopes on for all open-minded individuals in this country to saee!

You miss the point and I repeat it. The pivotal issue is that Justice William Atuguba is related to Dr Raymond Atuguba who compromised himself and aligned himself with President Mahama in demanding that unverified voters should vote. And Dr Raymond Atuguba has been rewarded with Executive Secretary position at the seat of the Presidency. Is this not serious enough to suspect bias and to raise an objection? Note that these three personalities are linked in one way or the other so as to have a tendency of compromising judment.

Note I also made a point that all the justices may have their political inclinations. But with the exception of Justice William Atuguba none of their relatives or relations have compromised themselves with President Mahama in an electioneering campaign that called for sucpicion, that is, unverified voting which is a contentious issue in NPP electoral petition before the Supreme Court. How you fail to understand a simple matter!!

What does this say about our so-called Africa beacon of democracy: NPP suspects the Electoral Commission and the NDC distrusts the Supreme Court.

We need a total overhaul of our state institutions through a well thought-out constitutional amendments which seeks to deprive any one particular party from arrogating a state institution or institutions to itself as seems to be the case now hence the distrust in out state institutions.

As long as the president of the day can use his or her office to influence decisions meant to be partial then the whole idea of democratic government remains a big JOKE.

Folks, this woman has done it in the past - coaching Atta Akyea on how to proceed on NPP's petition to overturn 2008 Presidential Election result or something along that line. This woman should not have beeen confirmed to the appointment. She is ethically and morally unqualified for the position.

Wake up Ghana! This woman has a vested interest in the case. She is sister in-law of Atta Akyea. Atta Akyea is closely related to Nana Akufo Addo. About 70% of Supreme Court Members are NPP sympathizers. Yes, Mrs. Georgina Wood, a NPP sympathizer leaked the info to Titus Glover, therefore, NPP petition before the Supreme Court should be tossed out of the windows of the Court. Another reason why NPP's petition should not be entertained is the party's attempt last week to dent the image of the judges of the Court.

This whole thing was a well-orchestrated plan than went arwry because of the 'loose' tongue of people like Nii Titus-Glover and Owusu Afriyie.
If the CJ believed her stated reason was sufficient grpunds fot her to recuse herself from the trial,was she not aware of the background of poeple like Js Douse,who had been a past NPP chairman for the Volta Region?
Even electing to ignore the selection of others,what would any reasonable person think about the inclusion of a former 'visible' party person(of the NPP) to sit on a case involving the fortunes of that party? And who do see crying foul here? Let`s not kid ourselves in this country about the true nature of our Judiciary!

We are living our own life toiling to fed ourselves and children, but if this so called Chief justice wants to mess up with out lives, then she must go and dig her own grave.
