Was it really wise of the NPP petitioners to tie the prez to their petition with his national and international reputation for human, civil rights and justice? Could he personally and conceivably have colluded with the EC to rig the elections in his favour? With the apparent free, fair and transparent nature of the elections as reported by ECOWAS' own observers, could the prez and his party have been busy influencing the results? Ghana having set such a good example in good governance sturctures in Africa, could they risk throwing it all away by doing something so irresponsible?

I guess the ECOWAS LEADERS have asked the same question and come to the conclusion, this just couldn't be. Yes, may be some administrative errors resulting in "apparent irregularities" on a very minor and limited scale but not enough to have affected what was otherwise a well organised and "policed" process in which Joy FM, an NPP leaning media house monitoring the process called the election for the president and CODEO, an independent polling organisation called it within less than 2% margin of error from the EC's own results.

I am inclined to believe that we have all been subjected to an exhaustive grievance which though necesary to be heard to confirm the robustness of our democracy and electoral process, nonetheless WILL NOT alter the outcome of the elections.

I have come to this conclusion which a number legal analysts and other respected commentarors on this forum have earlier opined after careful and sober analysis and reflection. The wisdom of NPP's challenge lies ONLY in its potential to strengthen our democracy but they should have challenged the electoral figures ONLY and not the president's role in the process. Their grievance should not have been about the president although arguably in their view he was an 'unfair beneficiary'. In my considered opinion, joining the president to the petition was unwise and a very big mistake, whatever the underlying reason.

I believe the elected president should now be allowed to get on with the business of governemnt and moving the country forward. The opposition in my view should start the process of regaining the trust of Ghanaians, seek to rebrand itself on a broader national platform, identify and build new and more-inclusive leadership, deal with all the bigots and recalcitrant tribalists and play a meaningful role in calling the government to account in a responsible opposition role rather than making the nation difficult to govern for the sake of it.

If they do not use that approach and/or choose to encourage (or by ommission do not dissuade) their supporters to cause chaos, I have a feeling the electorate will not forget that easily come the next election. These are just my honest opinions.
