Kojo, many people are finding it difficult to analyse the Malian situation. Yes Africa must unite but is it possible in our present situation?
Nobody would want a civil or religious war in one's country but if a section or group in a country feels marginalized and neglected, they easily fall prey to religious fanatics and colonial powers.
The Mali nomads of the North were very much neglected in terms of economic development and were never given a fair share in political appointments. They were treated as second class citizens. Let us not forget that we have similar problems in Ghana where the Nortern part had been neglected in terms of developments by various governments.Even the supposed developments taking place there is nothing to write home about. No wonder they are flocking to the south for jobs that are not available.
With time, many people in the world are becoming awakened and becoming more concious of their situation. So, these nomads and religious zealot could easily team up to fight the government.
There cannot be unity where some peolple like Mugabe has been on the throne since the time of Adam, when some political parties declare a one party state and people have no legal means of changing government,where there is so much official corruption and the poor continue to languish in poverty, Where there is no tranparency in election. For example, General Erskine did not score even a point at a place where he voted for himself as presidential candidate. What about the recent elections in Ghana where NPP is accusing NDC of electoral fraud and have gone to the extent of petitioning to the Supreme Court. Look at the case of Togo, as if the presidency is for a dynasty.
These are some of the issues that the AU should also address if Africa can move foward.

This is a man who tirelessly fought (with our money ) for African liberation and whose statues and writings were gotten rid of in Ghana (until Rawlings' government built his museum and Moseleum in Accra).

How true is the saying that only posterity is the true judge of a person's stature and true worth. Let us learn to respect and value our leaders whilst they are alive, just to make life a little better for them as they do the difficult job of running the country.

African leaders (Oh how I miss the Osagyefo!),
need to muster the political will and seize the moment to put mitigating and adaptive measures in place to deal with the hydra-headed impacts of climate change on our continent and its islands.

Droughts forcing pastoralists to seek green pastures and water for their cattle.
Perennial flooding, rampant forest fire, rising sea level, increasing desertification, all because of climate change.

Many of these so-called African heads of state either came to power through connivance with their ECs or hanged on to power by corrupting the people who run the elections like what has happened in Ghana. So mahama could not have, on morale grounds touched on that issue.
That stupid Yayi Boni who can't resolve his country's (Benin) problems but knows how to meddle in others problems should keep shut. If he knows how to advice he go and advice the EU and co to stop cheating Africa.
