Guatemala ex-ruler Rios Montt to face genocide trial
Gen Efrain Rios Montt has been under house arrest since his immunity from prosecution was lifted A judge in Guatemala has ordered that former military leader Efrain Rios Montt stand trial for genocide. Gen Rios Montt will face charges of crimes against humanity in connection with the killing of 1,771 indigenous Mayans during his rule in 1982-1983. Prosecutors said he wanted to wipe out the indigenous group, which he suspected of supporting rebel fighters. Gen Rios Montt, 86, is the first ex-president to be charged with genocide by a Latin American court. The ruling clears the way for a three-judge to try the former president and another former military man, Jose Mauricio Rodriguez. Gen Rios Montt had enjoyed immunity from prosecution for 12 years while he was serving as a congressman. The immunity was lifted on 14 January 2012, when his term ran out. He has been under house arrest since. Judge Miguel Angel Galvez said there was enough evidence linking the general to the killing of members of the Ixil Maya group to warrant the trial. Gen Rios Montt will also face charges over the forced displacement of 29,000 indigenous Guatemalans as part of what human rights groups have called his "scorched earth" policy. BBC regional correspondent Will Grant says the ruling is a significant victory for human rights advocates who have been pressing for his trial since the end of the civil conflict in 1996. An estimated 200,000 people were killed or went missing during the 36-year conflict. Gen Rios Montt's 17 months in power are believed to have been one of the most violent periods of the war.

Since the Obama administration and the EU started tightening the sanctions on Iranian banking sector, it has become next to impossible to pay Iran for its oil and gas in dollars, sterling, deutchmark or Euros, this has led to a complex barter system where nations are resorting to using gold to circumvent the sanctions. UN imposed sanctions are easier to monitor .
This is highstakes diplomacy that should be handled carefully because it involves several countries.

You would not understand.Foreign press houses reporters who were not in Ghana during the elections parroting the propaganda stained Ghanaian official news outlets (Baba Jamal News)reports of free and fair elections cannot be compared the official report in Turkey that a plane loaded with 1.5 tons of gold stamped with the Ghanaian seal has been impounded by customs in Turkey. Then comes a Ghanaian government spokesman to deny that any such incident occured heightening suspicion of some complicity in the matter. Some say no such plane ever stopped over in Accra airport, others are talking of a landing permit for the plane which then arrived in Accra from Tripoli and left after 72 hours. Questions arise about the sanity behind the route. Why fly with a turkish plane from Libya to Turkey with a transit stop in Accra. Such a detour from the shortest route to Turkey which would be due east raises questions again. Who is trying to hide the fact that the plane was in Ghana on its trip? Why did it fly southwards to Ghana before flying back north towards Arabia, the middle east and Turkey. Strange events indeed. Smells of rotten fish

President John Dramani Mahama arrived home from his four day state visit to Turkey on Thursday night.

The visit was at the invitation of Turkish President Abdullah Gul and was to further strengthen relations between Ghana and Turkey.

While there, President held talks with his Turkish counterpart, the Prime Minister and co-chaired a a bilateral meeting between Ghanaian and Turkish businesses.

He also inaugurated a new Chancery for Ghana's mission in Ankara.

President Mahama was met on arrival at the Kotoka International Airport by Vice President Amissah Arthur, Ms Hannah Tetteh, caretaker Minister of Trade and Industry and Mr Hassan Ayariga, presidential candidate of the People's National Convention in Election 2012 and other government officials.
