Guatemala ex-ruler Rios Montt to face genocide trial
Gen Efrain Rios Montt has been under house arrest since his immunity from prosecution was lifted A judge in Guatemala has ordered that former military leader Efrain Rios Montt stand trial for genocide. Gen Rios Montt will face charges of crimes against humanity in connection with the killing of 1,771 indigenous Mayans during his rule in 1982-1983. Prosecutors said he wanted to wipe out the indigenous group, which he suspected of supporting rebel fighters. Gen Rios Montt, 86, is the first ex-president to be charged with genocide by a Latin American court. The ruling clears the way for a three-judge to try the former president and another former military man, Jose Mauricio Rodriguez. Gen Rios Montt had enjoyed immunity from prosecution for 12 years while he was serving as a congressman. The immunity was lifted on 14 January 2012, when his term ran out. He has been under house arrest since. Judge Miguel Angel Galvez said there was enough evidence linking the general to the killing of members of the Ixil Maya group to warrant the trial. Gen Rios Montt will also face charges over the forced displacement of 29,000 indigenous Guatemalans as part of what human rights groups have called his "scorched earth" policy. BBC regional correspondent Will Grant says the ruling is a significant victory for human rights advocates who have been pressing for his trial since the end of the civil conflict in 1996. An estimated 200,000 people were killed or went missing during the 36-year conflict. Gen Rios Montt's 17 months in power are believed to have been one of the most violent periods of the war.

Secondly, the Contractor who is handling the work, should be relieve, they are all not ready to do the job as it supposed to be. No visibility studies have been done. How can you build an Airport for the past fifty years, and think the baggage rate or Passengers using the Airport will still be the same? Incompetent. They should be called to answer, or quit Let us be serious, or else even Juses cannot make things good for us.

THE NAME KOTOKA MUST ME DONE AWAY WITH. A TRAITOR'S NAME SHOULDNT BE PLACED ON ANY GOVT BUILDING IN GH. SECONDLY, THE PRESENT AIRPORT IN ACCRA CAN BE EASILY RENOVATED AND EXPANDED INTO A BIGGER, FULL FLEDGING INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. OUR USELESS, CLUELESS LEADERS HAVE NO FORESIGHT. Typical Ghanaian bureaucrat! Instead of accepting responsibility for their lack of vision and long term planning , they are always reacting to events and emergencies. Yes all airports undergo routine and ongoing maintenance, but this is done as part of a long term plan and in tandem with continuing operations as airports never take a day off. Just admit your incompetence and request for help from capable people to ensure smooth running of the airport. Also hire capable contractors who can complete the work with dispatch. It shouldn't take a whole year to replace carousels for Christ sake. That is unacceptable. If the contractor cant do it in a timely fashion, fire them and get someone who can.

Passengers were crowed into this small space with no air conditions, no standing fans - I mean very bad ventillation! This situation has persisted at Kotoka for sometime now. ARE THE AUTHOURITIES AWARE OF THE CONDITIONS OF PASSENGERS AT THAT LAST IMMIGRATION POINT BEFORE THE DUTY FREE SHOPS????
NO WONDER MOST OF THE IMMIGRATION OFFICIALS AT THAT POINT HAVE VERY BAD ODOUR!

My question is you started charging almost £90 for Kotoka Airport duty charges for all international passengers entering Ghana since the year 2004. What have you done with all that money? I have even traveling to Ghana since that time and I have not seen any changes. Tell us what phase one and phase two did to transform Kotoka Airport?

Why should a Hotel Lobby look better than the departure and arrival hall of the International Airport of the country? Shame on you Ghanaians and your so call leaders. I am forever ashamed every time I land in Ghana with potential business partners. The arrival hall is super-hot; the baggage carousel does not properly work. Everybody and their mother have their hands out for payola. Upon departure, the line at the check-in is tremendous, the immigration area and security check points have no A/C and as always, hands are out again for unearned money. With the supposedly 2 million+ passengers per year, where are all the airport imposed tax and visa fees going to? I for one will be willing to give Ghana an extra $5 to improve the airport if the money will indeed go towards the revamp of the airport. 5 dollars times 2,000,000 passengers a year equals $10,000,000. Add the amount already being collected and in 5 years, I am sure they will collect over $100,000,000. The airport should Not look the way it looks. If you build it, they will come.
