Dove; A Town Where It Is A Taboo To Menstruate, Give Birth And Bury The Dead

It is a taboo for women to give birth to babies or even menstruate in Dove, a town in the Mafi Traditional Area of the Central Tongu District.

As such, those expecting their menstruation and pregnant women in labour are by whatever possible means carried out of the town. They only return after delivery and after their menses have stopped.

This revelation was made by Dr Joseph Nuertey, the Volta Regional Medical Superintendent, when he delivered the state of health care in the region during the first general meeting of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs (VRHC) at Ho.

Dr Nuertey lamented that because of the age-long taboo, all efforts by the Ministry of Health (MoH) to establish a health facility to take care of birth and other issues had proven futile. He added that the taboo also forbade the burial of the dead in the town.

The medical superintendent, therefore, appealed to the VRHC to use their good offices to appease the gods in the area to lift the taboo. Dr Nuertey's revelation left the traditional rulers dumbfounded.

This prompted the Paramount Chief of the Battor Traditional Area, Togbega Patamia Dzekley VII, to say that he would immediately contact the chief and elders of Dove to see what could be done to resolve the issue

In most circumstances, it is the women, who are mostly farmers that nurture the children until maturity. According to the medical superintendent, he has been told that the gods of the town frown on anybody who flouts the taboo.

Dr Nuertey announced that maternal mortality in the region continued to be too high and this he attributed to the inadequate number of medical personnel and facilities in the region.

Kwasi Pratt is the most dangerous Journalist Ghana had ever have, he had the gut to recommend his fellow journalists to be executed by PNDC. Pratt even recommended Baako to be killed by the regime, thank God Baako was instead touchered violently and severely but his life was spared. This is what Kwasi Prat can do. Now Pratt is a secret agent to NDC and US Embassy in Ghana. May God forgive Prat and spare him the untold evils that will come upon him and his generations. The opening paragraph states, “I came to serve; I have finished my time here on earth and have moved on to everlasting rest and celestial duties with my heavenly father.”

The immediate question is; how did the dead man come to sign his own personal tribute, since he is already in heaven?

The letter then goes on melodramatically, “As you leaf through these pages of my life’s story, I pray to God that it touches your heart in many positive ways. Weep not, I am not dead. This is nonsense to say the lest. There is no tribe in Ghana known as 'northerners'. Mahama's tribe Gonja has more to do with southern Ghanaians (Guans) than most tribes in northern Ghana.

'Gonja (also Ghanjawiyyu) was a kingdom in northern Ghana; the word can also refer to the people of this kingdom. The Gonja are a Guan people who have been influenced by both Akan people and Mande people. With the fall of the Songhai Empire (c. 1600), the Mande Ngbanya clan moved south, crossing the Black Volta and founding a city at Yagbum. Under the leadership of Naba'a, the Ngbanya expanded rapidly, conquering several neighbors in the White Volta valley and beginning a profitable gold trade with the Akan states through nearby Begho. By 1675, the Gonja established a paramount chief, called the Yagbongwura, to control the kingdom. The Ngbanya dynasty has controlled this position from its founding to the present day, with only two brief interregnums. The current Yagbongwura, Bawah Abudu Doshie, has held his position since 2000.

Precolonial Gonja society was stratified into castes, with a ruling class, a Muslim trader class, an animist commoner class, and a slave class. Its economy depended largely on trade in slaves from Central Africa[1] and kola nuts, particularly through the market town of Salaga, sometimes called the "Timbuktu of the South." Wikipedia.

The Gonja language is a Tano language within the Kwa languages family, closely related to Akan languages.[2]

Guans are believed to be the first settlers in the modern day Ghana. They are scattered across all the regions in Ghana. Guans speak distinct languages which are different from the major languages in Ghana except Gonja. However, some of these Guan languages are influenced by major languages in Ghana, depending on where a particular Guan tribe is located. Guans in the Volta Region include Akpafu/Lolobi, Buem, Nkonya, Likpe, Logba, Anum-Boso, Amedzofe, etc. In the central region we have the Effutu, Awutu and Senya in Winneba and Bawjiase areas. There are Larteh and Kyerepong in the Eastern region. The Gonja people in the North and part of Brong Ahafo. Guans being the first settlers in Ghana, some were assimilated into the cultures of the major ethnic groups in the various regions we have today. Thus, some indigenes of Kpeshie in Greater Accra and Nzema, Sefwi, Ahanta etc. in the Western region may also trace their roots to Guans. The indigenes of most of the Fantes in the central region including Asebu, Edna, Aguafo etc. as well as Agona can also trace their origins from Guans. Presently, it is accepted that the Guan people can be found in five regions in Ghana: Volta, Nothern, Central, Eastern, and Brong Ahafo Regions.

The problem with Pratt is that he criticizes as if he has a problem with the person. Again, he expresses his opinion as if they are facts. Another thing is that even when he gets it wrong, he refuses or finds it difficult to apologise, which makes it look as if his statements are deliberate. My opinion is that under Mills he had a previlage position he is no longer enjoying. It could be money or the ear of Mills.

Even a JSS one kid knows that, the current appointments shows a 'very, very distorted view of gov't' and all the other portfolios created, as well as the gang of 3, etc,etc, smacks of confusion and a clear lack of understanding of how gov't machinery works and also how it can be improved to make it more efficent, not by throwing in more peolpe, but by reducing the adminstrative bottlenecks and the huge bureaucracy in the set up. It's one thing being good at engineering your way into the castle, and it's a whole different ballgame, when it comes to governance and that's where the NDC is sadly, lacking in competence.
