Dove; A Town Where It Is A Taboo To Menstruate, Give Birth And Bury The Dead

It is a taboo for women to give birth to babies or even menstruate in Dove, a town in the Mafi Traditional Area of the Central Tongu District.

As such, those expecting their menstruation and pregnant women in labour are by whatever possible means carried out of the town. They only return after delivery and after their menses have stopped.

This revelation was made by Dr Joseph Nuertey, the Volta Regional Medical Superintendent, when he delivered the state of health care in the region during the first general meeting of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs (VRHC) at Ho.

Dr Nuertey lamented that because of the age-long taboo, all efforts by the Ministry of Health (MoH) to establish a health facility to take care of birth and other issues had proven futile. He added that the taboo also forbade the burial of the dead in the town.

The medical superintendent, therefore, appealed to the VRHC to use their good offices to appease the gods in the area to lift the taboo. Dr Nuertey's revelation left the traditional rulers dumbfounded.

This prompted the Paramount Chief of the Battor Traditional Area, Togbega Patamia Dzekley VII, to say that he would immediately contact the chief and elders of Dove to see what could be done to resolve the issue

In most circumstances, it is the women, who are mostly farmers that nurture the children until maturity. According to the medical superintendent, he has been told that the gods of the town frown on anybody who flouts the taboo.

Dr Nuertey announced that maternal mortality in the region continued to be too high and this he attributed to the inadequate number of medical personnel and facilities in the region.

The same Chinise were brought in by Nkrumah to build the Dam, Nkrumah did not only do feasibility studies, the Chinise were actually there to build the Dam with millions of equipment and materials in place when Nkrumah was overthrown by UP Cronnies the NLM/C under Kotoka/Afrifa.

They drove the Chinise out and one would have expected my dear Kofi Abrefa Busia to resurrect the Bui Project since it would have benefited his home. Hatred for Nkrumah and anything Nkrumah had started would not let him resurrect the Bui Project!

Now you want people to believe that Nkrumah did only a feasibility studies? And give credit only to those that twarted the project to begin with?

Shame, do not twist history!

Anyway I am very excited that after so many years and so much money wasted because of politics we will finally see a Bui Dam and enjoy its fruits.

This should be a lesson for politicians. I respect John Kuffour for resurrecting the project, I thank John Mills for continuing from where John Kuffour left. That is how we build a nation. National interest first before politics!

I hope they do something also with all such projects in the interest of the Nation.

The trouble with his then opponents was that, they did not have the capacity to see the big picture that Nkrumah and others envisioned. Hence they were reduced to resorting to tribal bickering and other parochial pursuits that could only serve the interests of a few privileged individuals, whilst the vast majority of the population and Africa in general continued to languish in poverty and ignorance.

Ex President Kuffour picked it up and was very pragmatic about it where other subsequent leaders have just paid lip service. Currently, the economies of the two countries that you mentioned are being controlled by China. 1993 - 2013 is enough years for something better to happen. There is nothing wrong for China to contribute to our development.

The PNDC and NDC were in power for 20 years and could not pull off the construction of the BUI Dam until the NPP came to power. Now the NDC and Asiedu Nketia and Co. are enjoying the fruits of the NPP labor. This shows which party can bring businesses to Ghana. Another case in point is the Oil Discovery under the leadership of the NPP. Ghana has not seen nothing yet if the Supreme Court can throw out the corrupt and illegitimate Mahama and his NDC and bring back the NPP. A word to the wise is enough.

That is a very wise advise.Get Chainsaw operators and give them a contract for cutting all trees in the lake area for firewood and charcoal.

If the Chinese are in charge of this project then what is the purpose of the Ghanaian Engineers.We can do this on our own and do not have to depend on foreign company.Its a big shame

U and Rawlings stayed in power for 20 good yrs.U never had focus to initiate this all important project.Kuffour started this project and the time frame to complete was until 2010.It took u extra 3yrs to finish this nonesense ...
