Iam a Christian. And I understand that gays (who are humans and citizens of Ghana) must have access to all ghanaian human rights such as access to public housing if any, healthcare, schooling, freedom of expression etc. But when it comes to the so-called "gay rights", I don't think there should be any such thing, since that in my understanding will be discriminatory because no other segment of the society claims any such rights ie: "Black Rights" "White Rights" "Northerners Rights" "Akan Rights" etc.Our Ghanaian (unwritten) culture as well as our religions are against marriage between people of the same sex. If we want to codify that, then the government should do so and be clear about it. Otherwise gays will continue to claim that it is their human right to get married to who they want as long as it is NOT against our constitution in Ghana. Remember, they do NOT agree with what our culture and religions say about gays beacuse they dont have to face any obvious punishment for breaking any law. Yes, soceities have come out against so-called gay rights but they base it on culture, religion and morality. And sometimes they rather get into troublle with the law if they become too extreme with their opposition. So let all Ghanaians press on the government to state clearly its stance,Or else....

If not, then public opinion will always speak for him which will definitely go against him. By way of extension, will someone be wrong to say that it is a calculated attempt by the Mahama government to gradually legitimize homosexuality in Ghana as the reason for picking Oye Lithur for that particular ministry on Gender, knowing very well the nominee's stance on the subject.
Its true every human being has a write to live, yet exercising that write must also take into cognisance the laws of the land with regards to what the nation has decided to accept as their stance on the issue.

There is no middle point with respect to this issue on homosexuality,it is either you endorse it or you are against it and as a nation, we must rise above anything that will devide us by ensuring that sanity, morality, our traditions and culture are not adversly influenced because of any western aid. After all we can take care of ouselfs if we manage our economy and resources well.

Well said, Cardinal. And if we were really serious about having a national debate on the issue of homosexuality, why wasn't that made part of the recent Presidential Debates?
I would have loved to hear Akufo-Addo's ,Ayariga's, and Mahama's views on the issue. Would that have made a difference in the outcome of the 2012 elections? Maybe.

The issue should be deliberated upon in Parliament, a bill passed, with the President signing it. We shouldn't allow this potentially divisive issue to prevent us from keeping our eyes on the prize of sustainable and democratic national development.

In my candid opinion, it would be asinine and impractical, if not suicidal to refuse the services of a cardiologist or a neurosurgeon simply because he or she might be gay.

Homosexuality has existed in human culture since the beginning of time. It has no procreative value but nevertheless is a variation of human sex preference. In a democracy you cannot ascribe different levels of rights and protections to different groups of people and indeed the president's personal opinion is irrelevant as are many of the opinions of clergy and the like. This is a human rights issue and yes, homosexuality was not imported into Ghana or any place in Africa it is a part of us because we are part of the human universe.

Who are the people lobbying for Gay rights and legalization across the world,why will America and the rest tie Gay-ism to Aid and Donations. He should also do a research into which individuals donated the single largest amounts of money towards presidents Obama's campaigns. Why would president Obama,a renowned and distinguished social activist and attorney,and above all a 'Moralist' be coerced to declare a lackadaisical stance for Gay rights; to the extent that he would want to tie it to Aid-a socialist? What is more insightful is Obama's stance on Gay-ism in His first term-''NO Gay-ism''. What has happened to that stance-''its been destroyed by the power of Lobbyists. It is obvious he is ignorant. He should contact the Department of Information Studies to be EDUCATED on Lobbyist and stop grunting. I don't blame him,because some professors at our universities are virtually mad and walk barefooted on campus-reason-:they have learned too much that they even consider wearing slippers and other things as scholarly. The president declaring his stand on gays and lesbians will only be a flip side of it. He does not superintend over gays and lesbians and his stance on gays and lesbians will not reform the lives of them. It beholds on people like Amos Annan and co to take up the fight at theirs churches and prayer camps.

Just as you and I are entitled to our private views about anything and everything including gay issues, the same way the president of the land has every right to keep his views to himself and no,where in our constitution is it required that anyone "must" declare their position on gays and lesbians.

As it is the president has a lot more important and pressing matters in his in tray and this is certainly very low down on the list of priorities we need to address as a nation. Stop wasting everybody's time.
