I have a problem with a visibly impaired person being given such a challenging assignment. Is he the only one in Ghana that can hold that post? If not why not give it to another one who has all the senses and organs working normally and then let the visibly impaired accompany him with his wisdom? Visible impairment would lead to foreseen and unforeseen challenges in the ministry.

It is rather you who is living in the stone-age. You reason like a troglodyte.

In this country Ghana, we have all sorts of pretenders to all kinds of glamorus fanciful qualifications but yet, this has not had any visible or impressive impact on our progress as a nation.

Again, we have had all kinds of Ministers with flamboyant qualifications who even though they can see, read, write, walk, talk, hear and are not restricted by any disabilities, they have been pitifully swerved by the institutions and the people who work with them.

Mark my word, this blind Minister will be an open cheque for those sharks in the Ministry and the NDC govt. Even Mills, a whole President who could see - well, partly, could not manage these free-range piranhas.

If Mahama wants to pander to the whims of the diability lobby, such a person could have been appointed to any of the many Boards or the Council of State. What he has just done, I am afraid, will ultimately bring shame and further humiliation to people with disabilities in this country.

We are too fond of copying what other countries do, blindly. In places like Europe, China, Russia and America there are strong systems in place which cannot be manipulated or distorted by innate corrupt tendencies. Here, our systems simply dont work so any one appointed as a Minister is virtually on his or her own to apply spontaneous discretion at all times to get any work - if at all, done.

As you have described, anybody placed in that position will still have a challenge so why are we trying to make it look like the sighted one will have a free ride when placed in that position?

Brother MATHS @ MASS, I have followed your comments on this site and I do agree with most of your comments but this time I totally disagree with your comment. There is always the first time. We should give this Dr. a chance. He has come a long way and have overcome all obstacles visual impairment has offered him, why should we place another obstacle in his way because he is visually impaired?

It is like saying women cannot do this or that. There was a time in our history we would not even accept women wearing pants and women who attempted to ride a bicycle were frowned upon or simply stopped, it was thought women did not have the mental capacity to do MATHS. Now what? Women can do all men can do, except some still hold unto the archaic idea that women and even some believe that the black man is not very capable and are naturally impaired.

Dr. Henry is very capable. He has come thus far for anybody to continue doubting him and placing obstacles in his way, like some did during his school days at WESS. Some unscrupulous students will place bucket full of water in their (the students that were blind) way so they might fall and here I see many in the nation trying the same stuff, let us give him the chance.

I think Mahama is leading us in the right path by giving the challenged responsibilities that will demonstrate how far we have come as a nation.

He traveled to and fro walked on streets he had never been to, from class one in the North then to Secondary School in the BA and to Legon and to Europe and back.

Once I met one of my classmates in another city (about 5 years after we had graduated from High School) who was one blind just like Henry, and Henry was his buddy in school; I just called his name and I thought he would not know who I was, surprisingly he called me by my name.

God has given them other keen senses to compensate, they should never be ridiculed, if we give them the opportunities we have, we will never have to listen to the lalasulala.

According to Akan tradition anyone, who contests to occupy an Akan stool must be without blemish physically and morally. Therefore, to enstool even a person which has only a large scar on his face, any other deformity or physical handicaps is a taboo and against our tradition. Since the custodian of the stool is not only representing the entire town or state, but is also the spiritual leader and represents our ancestors and God in a small way. By the way, no one forces you to occupy a stool if your beliefs or physical abilities do not allow you this.

Do you think a disabled person can ever become the pope? no way, because the pope is suppossed to be without blemish. Why dont you tell the Vatican that its backward that no woman or disabled person is qualified to become a pope? I see, you respect foreign cultures, but not your own. Do you think a disabled person can become President of the Republic of Ghana? When you are even crying, when a presidential candidate or sitting president is alleged to have health problems?

What is the sense for a ministry of chieftaincy at all? He does not have any power. This ministry is just a waste of time,just like the national and regional house of chiefs. What are they doing? Asanteman Council certainly does not care about them. Most problems have been created by politicians, whether it be the illegal elevation of the Sunyanihene to the status of an Omanhene by Rawlings, creation of Bono-Ahafo region out of Western Asante region, Tano-Subin crisis etc. They say traditional rulers have no business dabbling into politics. Likewise politicians have no business dabbling into chieftaincy affairs.

P.s. Yes all human beings must be respected, but not all human beings are qualified to occupy certain positions or are equal. Not even all traditional rulers are equal.

Any stupid chief who thinks he can do his work is not a chief. A chief is for everybody. How many chiefs are doctors.
Seidu and Koray plus Malik were born not to you used their eyes but sense and I wish those stupid chiefs should look for some sense.
Seidu, Koray and Malik never miss any public meeting to do with chiefs. If Wa-naa did keep record you would have seen them with all the students of school of the blind dancing and listen to Wa-naa Sadik.
Any stupid chief who thinks people who dont use their eyes cant lead is stupid. Seidu used to take his own water for bath, go to classes with no help from anybody in navasco. How many chiefs in ghana are fit. Some have eyes yet their crowns get stolen. Nobody should go around they before we call all the chiefs blind.
Chiefs should be taking care and listening to their people no matter how they were born.
Seidu knows more about cheifs more than any chief in ghana.

There are clear differences between a chief, and a minister: The first instance is, that a chief sits on a traditional sacred stool, or skin, but a minister does not. Another instance is that, the chief rules, but the minister doesn't. The other instance is that the chief is the over all head of the land, but the minister is not. However, if an appointee is nominated head the National Head of Chiefs, then he, or she must meet the criteria of becoming a chief. Dr. Danaa's designated office is not making him a chief.

Asanteman transcends regional boundaries. Are you saying when Asante chiefs in the Bono-Ahafo region are being enstooled the consent of the Bono-Ahafo regional house of chiefs is needed? Absolutely not true.

Are you saying, when the New-Juabenhene is being enstooled, the consent of the Akyem-Abuakwa council is needed? Not, true.

Are you saying, when the Woraworahene is being enstooled, the consent of the Volta regional house of chiefs is needed? Absolutely not true.

Any area which falls under the jurisdiction of Asanteman is not the business of any regional house of chiefs. Why do you think, when the government stated, that they would establish land courts in each region, but they do not have affect on any area which falls under jurisdiction of Asanteman? You dont even know your own constitution well.

Now he is stealing your gold to pay debts, changing your tradition which will call the wrath of the gods on your lands, like the persistent fire outbreaks (more of it to come if he is not changed sooner by the courts' rulings), introducing gay rites activists into the seat of government with the plan of getting fundding from gay groups to pay debts, etc. We are heading towards somewhere which will be desastrous. Mahama is not, and cannot be the leader Ghanaians are looking for (either he was imposed on us or we voted for him, is a big mistake); Ghanaians have just damaged the destiny of the beautiful nation.

It is therefore rational and logical that if some of the chiefs are educating or reminding the authorities of the existence of such taboos, beliefs and traditions, why are people challenging?

If Ghanaians believe in the pouring of libations, invoking the spirits of our dead ancestors, why are people arguing unnecessary that certain demands should not be met or beliefs not logical?

I remember during the days that I was growing up and living in the village, it was a taboo to slaughter a blind fowl or sheep to the gods.

Is President Mahammah prepared to receive any curses from these gods and ancestors if there is truth in such beliefs and taboos?

'Give to Ceaser what belongs to Ceaser'.

Ghanaians need our peace and not any curses!

The rejection of the chieftancy minister in the name of customs and tradition is plain discrimination and cruelty.It is a result of our cold heartedness towards the disabled in our society.I believe that in every situation,we have to put ourselves in that position and feel for the individual.We dont have to diguise tribalism as politics to draw us apart.It is time we embrace each other,and prove that we are one people with a common destiny.Nothing should impede a visually impaired Ghanaian who has risen through challeges to become a PHD holder to head that ministerial position.This should warrant our support not rejection or condemnation.Thank you all and God bless our homeland,Ghana.

This is the second time Mahama is being compelled against the nomination of his ministers; the first one was Nana Oye Lutor which Mahama failed to listen to conscience and have her confirmed. Now it is the turn of the chiefs. Mahama should understand that apart from constitutional rights, Ghana has tradition which needs to be followed; and as such Mahama should again listen to the Chiefs. If he ignores them once again as he did in the case of Nana Oye Lutor, I do not think as Ghanaians we can continue to fight him but he, Mahama should understand that he is ruling a nation and its people have a voice and there is the need for him to listen to them. If he continues to ignor their views, I would not be surprised if he fails as President if he is to continue to rule this nation. MPs should not be blamed for confirmation his ministers because they arrive at a decision based on the competence of the candidate. There is a difference between competence and the traditions of this nation. A word to the wise is Mahama.

I support the call by certain chief (s) in Ghana that it is against custom, and indeed a taboo, to appoint a physically impaired person (a blind man)to supervise the noble institution of chieftaincy in Ghana as a Minister and who will also be part of the Executive Arm of Government.

One may argue that the late Chief Azantilo of Sandema? was a blind man. But do we not take into account wether or not he became blind after he was enstooled/enskinned? I do not know. I beg this question/issue. Even if he was blind before being enskinned it is not acceptable , period!

We have recognise, however, in traditional terms, and even in these days, if it should happen, chiefs are to lead their people in wars and many other areas of human endeavour, e.g. international negotiations, etc, etc. And these onerous duties do not go for a blind person even if the international community does not care or they rather see these as human rights in display (I am sorry).

In much the same way people are taken into the army when they are physically fit. But they are not removed after they sustain disabilities in the course of duty. This could be perhaps said of the blindness of late Azantilo. However, it does not make sense to appoint such a person like Dr Danaa to lead a noble institution as of the chieftaincy. Let us pause to consider this: who would have voted for President Mahama if he was blind? Again as a Minister, Dr Danaa would be part of the Executive Arm of Government led by President Mahama. We should note this fact. We should not be blinded by fanaticism. I am shocked, a learned person like Dr Nabila, a former distinguished Professor of Geography in our own premier University of Ghana, now President of the National House of Chiefs by dint of his royal lineage, should endorse a blind man to head the noble Ministry of Chieftaincy. One may ask: "Do some chiefs want to take advantage of a blind leader to further their nests (I am sorry)? Or is it borne out of tribalism or what? (again, I am sorry)". I do not believe Dr Nabila is reporting the concerted endorsement of the National House of Chiefs of a blind man to lead them? I will be shocked if that is the situation. Then I will apologise to Dr Nabila.

The Amnesty International may talk about their human rights, which we all deem to be fair and in the right direction. But there are limits in the application of human rights. It is not , and it should not be in all situations that so called human rights should be accepted, especially when they go against common sense and accepted norms deeply rooted in our society and culture and also for noble causes. We all know Dr Danaa is a lawyer and he is also briliant guy. The president should consider that Dr Danna is part of his executive arm and he should not have even attempted to nominate him for appointment him (a blind man) because he (Mahma) is not blind. And it would have been most unlikely to be voted for if he (Mahama) was blind.
