He's right by saying that'cos ewes will always expect the gov't to come to their aid. They claim to be more intelligent than any other tribe though apart from the northern and upper regions, the are the poorest environmentally and development wise. When their so-called acdemics finish their studies, they prefer to live in other regions instead of helping their home region in communal development. Ewes get scattered in Akan regions to do mean jobs; carpentry, masonry, cocoa-plantation caretaking etc etc. They say Ashantis youth do shoe-shinning forgetting that by so doping they contribute in their own small way in helping their communities by putting up homes. These are not blatant lies for the facts are there to be verified. Go to HO, the regional capital, Hohoe, Keta, Anloga, Denu, Akatsi, Dzelukope whichj are uncontestably the major towns in this region and compare them with the major Ashanti towns and the result is clear(no need for photos) but you ewes will continue claiming your superiority over Ashantis.God helps those who help themselves....Trokosi cannot !

My fellow Voltarians particularly those from the northen volta,let this be a unifying force for us as we have been neglected by the central government for far too long.The region is one of the least develop in the country because we have been wrongly accused of being parasites in the country since the days of Dr Busia in 1969.Because of hatred from the highest decision making body at the time,Volta region was designate the position of 9th out of the 10 regions in the country in terms of development priority list or scale of prefrence even though the lake that powers the cheapest source of electricity lies roundly and squarely in volta.

To the people of Nkwanta,whether the oil was found in the north or south,the common denominator is that,the oil was found in UKWANTA.Hard it not because of the benefits local administration brings by way of common fund,I would have mooted the idea of unifying north and south Nkwanta so as to eleminate the said boundary fued permanantly.But be it as it may,we call on cooler heads to prevail over short term emotions.

There is excitement among the people of Jumbo when a hand-dug well being sunk for Mr Kofi Gyato, farmer for domestic purposes, begun to yield an oily substance suspected to be crude oil. Jumbo, a small town lies between the Nkwanta North and South district and the substance, which some say smells like diesel and kerosene was discovered flowing after the well diggers reached the 10-metre depth.
Mr Gyato said harmattan or dry seasons are good periods for digging wells for when water was struck in those times, the resource could be sustainable all year round. He said initially when the diggers noticed the layer of oil in the well they thought someone had intentionally poured the substance into the well. Mr Gyato said the substances have been harvested into “Jerry” cans and other containers for testing purposes but more of the substance keeps flowing with promising yields.
Mr Paul Levin Gyato, Nkwanta North District Chief, said checks from the Chinese Jianzhi International Corporation, a road construction firm, located some 400 metres away have proved negative about leakages from their fuel dump. He said mechanic shops and fuel stations could not be sited within the vicinity of the well to suggest that the development stemmed from seepages. Mr Gyato called on state institutions and academic researchers to assist them in ascertain the content and the extent of the discovered flow. He said security personnel have been deployed to guard the discovery.
Mr Emmanuel Mozart Attah, a geologist and Chief Executive of Water Plus Drilling Company Limited, told the Ghana News Agency that the discovery demands more investigations. He said parts of the Northern Volta region and the three northern regions are sitting on shale rock formations which are a potential receptacle for oil more so the area is an inland basin capable of containing more oil deposits. The geologists said a distinguishing feature between oil and water is the property of not mixing.

I don't blame you for writing the things you wrote, having not travelled thoroughly in the Ewe part of the VR before. As a matter of fact, even Ewes in the Ewedome area frequently are under the misconception that milk and honey are flowing in the southern VR, among the Anlos and Tongus, something far from the truth. That's why people like that, including other fellow Ghanaians, expressed shock at the lack of any signs of govt devt projects when they travel down south for the first time. An Anlo man recently narrated the reaction of an Asante driver he charted to drive him to the towns and villages across the Keta lagoon, which we along the coast refer to as "Waterback" towns or Torgoduwo. Upon reaching there, the man's initial misconceptions and talk changed and he insisted that they were in Togo, not Ghana! He must have a very negative image about conditions in Togo!

Apart from the single road that travels through the southern area from Sogakope to Aflao and then through Anloga to Keta, which roads are often in a state of disrepair, especially the Sogakope-Aflao road, there is hardly any network of roads in the area, except for some untarred tracks, more like wide paths.

Schools, yes we have some but grossly inadequate since the 1970s even at the basic level. Local and church efforts built most of those schools. It was far, far easier to enter a 6th Form if you schooled in northern and middle VR than southern VR in the 1970s, due to the shortage of places at KETASCO AND SPACO and I believe those conditions still exist when it comes to entering SSS. Division One is no guarantee that you'd get place, as your best 5 must be at least 15 or less at times! Polytechnics and Postsecs or joining the labour force were the only options for many. Of course, that's why many choose to go to 6th Form in other regions, where even people with Div 2 get places in 6th Form, and then re-sit either Maths or English to improve their O'L grades. Often, students get Div 2 simply cos they didn't do well in those 2 subjects.

Water and electricity is a traumatic problem for people in even the Accra-Metropolitan areas, so less said about them the better. Vast areas of the Ewe areas of the VR haven't even been touched by those amenities yet!

Had it not been for the mobile phone revolution, much of Eweland would still be in the telecoms doldrums!

Yes, if you travel to southern VR, esp. to the sandpit stretching from Anyanui thru Anloga to Keta, you'd see that they live in far better houses than you'd see at other parts of the VR and Ghana. Since the area is one of the most densely populated areas in Ghana, land is put to go use. Besides, it has been exposed to Western influence for over 500 years and was once a rich trading area with a port at Keta! But if you travel to across the Keta lagoon, their accommodation isn't that any better from the average in the VR! Those good houses you see along the coast are built by the people themselves through their labour in the area (farming, fishing, trading, carpentry, masonry, etc.) and as migrant fishermen, farmers, traders and workers from the Congo to Senegal! Only few govt built estates and houses are there. The Anloga Post Office is still being housed for a token under the storey building the Togobos offered the colonial govt, despite several years of attempts to retrieve it! So, we don't even have a govt built post office yet! I hope Vodafone does something about that! I shall take up the issue this evening with one of the Togobo elders who raised the issue with me a while ago.

It is a fact that a lot of the cocoa farms in the northern VR are owned by southern Ewes, besides Krobos and other Akans from outside that area. I was personally attacked in far away Norway by someone who came from the area on that issue. According to him, instead of the usual share-cropping system in such cases, the chiefs sold the lands outright to the migrant farmers! It is bad enough in areas in the cocoa areas of Ashanti, Eastern, BA and Western Regions where the chiefs and land-owners get one third of the proceeds and blow them in the big towns where they live, leaving the cocoa growing areas proper in severe backwardness. So, I feel some sympathy for the people of northern VR whose chiefs sold off their inheritance a long time ago! That's why some of us are opposed to any attempt to sell off the salt producing areas of the Keta Lagoon to strangers and foreigners, be they Ghanaians or Indians!

To conclude this piece, it is amazing that people from the northern VR are suddenly making their presence in the VR and Ghanaweb known. We Ewes have been taking the shit and insults for everything that emanates from the VR for so long, even though they are among the big players and beneficiaries of the PNDC/NDC largesse! I won't mention names except to call on the concerned people there to turn the heat on their own selfish leaders, who are just good at feathering their own caps, just like the Ewe leaders too. There is nothing happening in the VR which is not the effort of their own people. If you don't do so, just like the cocoa producing there which made the VR the 3rd largest cocoa producing region by the 1960s did not bring you any special benefits (and you people even fail to counter accusations we read daily that the VR does not add anything to the national coffer, often preferring to join those jaundiced elements to be insulting Ewes as the source of your woes), even an oil find there won't bring you any devt! You've heard them saying that the oil doesn't belong to you already! Put in a bid to buy the block where the oil is found then! That's what the sane people in the area should start working on then instead of start fighting among yourselves and attacking long suffering Ewes, sufferings your mentally warped, slave raiding and trading ancestors contributed so much to. They were lucky all of them were not massacred after the defeat suffered in the Sagrenti War which liberated the area from the evil yoke they brought there!

BTW, the Akans in the area are migrants/settlers, left behind after the Sagrenti War. If they don't like to live together with the people on whose lands they settled, they can trace their ways home to the Asante Region or wherever they came from! Period! No Oti Region shall be carved out of the present VR. Enough of it has been carved out and added to other regions already!

Besides, Adu Biahene, there are other historians on Ghana. What about oral history from parents? Unfortunately, ignorant parents themselves are no longer transmitting any history to their children. That's why we have too many dzimakplas on Ghanaweb!

Some of us knew long ago that under the great Nkwanta mountain there was oil because plants such as mango and coconut have taste of oil such kerosene in them when eaten and the German who once rule the area made it known that there are mineral deposit there but who cares, that is the area known in Volta South as overseas because it is neglected and underdeveloped with most of their roads untied ,poor amenities lacking water and electricity until recently when the electricity was extended,another area is the Akpafu area near Hohoe which is also rich in iron ore deposit yet the subsequent Ghana governments never took interest in it development till now after the German mined iron there before their departure in 1920 after the first world when the area was mandated to the British by the League of Nations, it is a pity the people from real which is former German colonial area given to the British have been kept under developed and all their mineral untaped making the people poor yet nobody cares even the Voltarians who had the opportunity to rule under the PNDC/NDC for close to 19 years did nothing to promote mineral discovery until a search for water exposed the wealth of Northern Volta , the Volta Region has huge mercury deposit believed to be second highest deposit on the globe ,something known to the Germans over 100 yeas ago ,what of gold and diamonds under the huge mountains of Volta Region , some one with deep knowledge about the rich mineral deposit in the Volta Region once put it like this , Volta Region is richer in mineral than Ghana put together so it time the poverty associated with the region be put aside and the government move to take advantage of the wealth of the region and use it to transform the region and the rest of Ghana , long live Volta Region and long live Ghana

They act on their greediness, ignorance and stupidity, rather than thinking about the prosperity of the whole. Hey Mr. Oti Bless and Joseph Nikab, if you want a good example of the sort of flame you are helping to fan. Please look no further than Nigeria, the chaos and suffering have ravaged, the people suffer while the FEW roll in cash and cover themselves in fancy clothing. This "FIND" if it is what you think it is, then it could be a curse or a blessing depending on how you let either your heads or hearts control you thoughts and the situation. But from my observation and what I have read, you are rather making a volatile situation worse. People look up to you direction, if you have sense to direct them and be a good role model, which at this moment I doubt. A few days ago you did not even know of the existence of this oil and now you are claiming ownership? This is a property of Ghanaians not a community! You are the chosen leaders of your respective areas, please let peace prevail and see this as a common heritage. It is time we as Ghanaians turn the tables around and develop our country and our continent, for we have been given heads to think and hearts to feel the need for love. Remember Libya, what happened there! Truth is the only way to peace, be selfless for you have promised the people of Ghana. Be open and transparent to the people, ask the opinion of the people when you lack understanding. For the fact that you have been educated in white man's knowledge means you know it all. Please Politicians know that you work for the people and you will be hold accountable to every single cedis. Be the change that you promised and a beacon of hope and peace for Ghana. Long live Ghana.

There is excitement among the people of Jumbo when a hand-dug well being sunk for Mr Kofi Gyato, farmer for domestic purposes, begun to yield an oily substance suspected to be crude oil. Jumbo, a small town lies between the Nkwanta North and South district and the substance, which some say smells like diesel and kerosene was discovered flowing after the well diggers reached the 10-metre depth.

Mr Gyato said harmattan or dry seasons are good periods for digging wells for when water was struck in those times, the resource could be sustainable all year round. He said initially when the diggers noticed the layer of oil in the well they thought someone had intentionally poured the substance into the well. Mr Gyato said the substances have been harvested into “Jerry” cans and other containers for testing purposes but more of the substance keeps flowing with promising yields.

Mr Paul Levin Gyato, Nkwanta North District Chief, said checks from the Chinese Jianzhi International Corporation, a road construction firm, located some 400 metres away have proved negative about leakages from their fuel dump. He said mechanic shops and fuel stations could not be sited within the vicinity of the well to suggest that the development stemmed from seepages. Mr Gyato called on state institutions and academic researchers to assist them in ascertain the content and the extent of the discovered flow. He said security personnel have been deployed to guard the discovery.

Mr Emmanuel Mozart Attah, a geologist and Chief Executive of Water Plus Drilling Company Limited, told the Ghana News Agency that the discovery demands more investigations. He said parts of the Northern Volta region and the three northern regions are sitting on shale rock formations which are a potential receptacle for oil more so the area is an inland basin capable of containing more oil deposits. The geologists said a distinguishing feature between oil and water is the property of not mixing.

WELL, LET'S HOPE IT IS A REAL HYDROCARBON FIND AND OF BOTH COMMERCIAL QUANTITY AND QUALITY INDEED.

By a legislative instrument and of course reaffirmed by the rightful ownership of the land, the area belongs to the Nkwanta South. The villages, however, are predominantly occupied by Konkomba farmers who would like to join their kinsmen in the Nkwanta North.As a result they have even failed to participate in the 2008 election in protest of the government's failure to heed to their plea.Not only that, they have also refuse to pay their taxes to the Nkwanta South District Assembly. No one is engaged in any war. The rightful owners are peace loving people and will only engage them in a very civil manner.Even the lands in the North belongs the same people but was calved out of the south for political expediences. Our politicians are creating the same problems our colonizers created years ago.If this find is actually found to be in commercial quantities then of course this could ignite serious tension in the area.

“I think they (Forum Energy) are now discussing a joint cooperation with China. It’s a very positive sign. Why not let two companies discuss the cooperation? I think cooperation
will be the best way,” Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Ma Keqing said.

This is probably our first glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel. Never has China been this positive before, especially when estimates showed that the Recto Bank prospect has potential reserves of 3.4-trillion cubic feet of gas and 440 million barrels of oil that would make this a bigger find than the Malampaya gas field, also off Palawan.
