The Nigeria Union of Traders Association Ghana (NUTAG) is unhappy with the closure of the shops of some of its members by officials of the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

Over 40 shops belonging to Nigerian traders in the Okaishie Market area in the Central Business District of Accra were closed down on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 and traders were ordered to vacate the place without an alternative.

A notice signed by K.N. Atuahene, which was pasted on the shops titled, “NON GHANAIANS ENGAGED IN TRADING IN MARKET PLACES read, “It has come to the notice of the taskforce that you are engaged in trading activities in the market place. Your activities contravene section 18 of GPIC Law 1194 (Act 478).

Please take notice that your continuous operations from the market will no more be countenanced and that your shop has been permanently closed from today.

In case you have any difficulties related to the actions of the task force please do not hesitate to contact the undersigned at the Ministry of Trade and Industry.”

However, the aggrieved persons claimed they were mistreated at the Ministry when they approached the officials for dialogue.

Some of the affected persons, who spoke with CITY & BUSINESS GUIDE, said they were being maltreated contrary to the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) trade laws.

Meanwhile, Chinese and Lebanese have been allowed to trade openly even though they are not part of ECOWAS.

Deacon John Igwe Ukala, the president of the group, equated the treatment being meted out to them to the reintroduction of the Aliens Compliance Law under the Busia regime.

He insisted that once Ghana is a signatory to the ECOWAS treaty, it is obliged to treat persons from the ECOWAS region like Ghanaians since its citizens also receive same treatment abroad.

He called on both the Nigerian and Ghanaian governments to prevail upon the Trade Ministry to rescind its decision.

Deacon Ukala said they may have to go to the ECOWAS court to seek redress if the situation does not improve.

Deacon Ukala said even though he had lived in Ghana since 1971, it has been difficult for him to naturalize, adding that the processes are cumbersome.

Damiaw Uduba said he paid over GH¢25,000 as goodwill for his shop for a 10-year period and operated his bicycle spare parts business for only two years.

The closure of his shop, he noted, had negatively affected him, stressing that he failed to raise the needed amount of money to pay his children’s school fees.

Ghanaians were not even trading in the bicycle parts then but they even trained some Ghanaians, who are now plying the same trade. Asking them to leave now to make indigenes take over is definitely cruel and unfair, he indicated.

He said should they move to a new location, the authorities would ask them to vacate the place.

He therefore advised the ministry to create an ECOWAS market to solve the issue.

If the Trade Ministry insists on the action, we would have no option than to relay the information to our relations back home to replicate the action against Ghanaians in Nigeria, Uduba said.

Prince Ugochukwu Uzokwu, who also has lived in Ghana since 1997, said the ECOWAS mediation proved unsuccessful.

He entreated ECOWAS to take up the matter which he said was assuming a rather serious dimension.

All the aggrieved persons backed their claims with their business registration documents, resident’s permit and other information, which indicate that they are honouring their tax obligations.

Irene Nnadi, a widow, recalled how she struggled to take care of her children.

She said her husband, who lived in Ghana for over 15 years and died last September, started the shop but she took over the business after his death.

Mrs. Nnadi explained that the closure of the shop had adversely affected her.

The Nigeria High Commission is yet to make an official statement on the matter.

They pour money into campaigns and do whatever it takes for politicians to accept or soften on homosexuality. They started by fighting for human rights and then escalated it to gay marriages. Unfortunately, I don’t think now that they have a stranglehold on Mahama they are going to let go easily.
They basically have Mahama is in their pocket that is why Mahama got so worried when Ayariga goofed, that he had to quickly track down Solomon to apologies. They have managed to get a more conservative UK to legalize same sex marriages and Solomon and others are traveling all over the world expanding their campaign. My gut feeling is that it is too late for Mahama – if he pushes back then they are going to lobby for foreign donations to be cut etc. It is a dicey situation and not as easy as we think for Mahama to pull away. Why do you think Mahama is so quiet about what is going on considering this was published in NY Times and all over the place? Mahama keeping quiet is not going to make this saga go away, he better come out and make a clear stand. Right now all Mahama is doing is “double talk” which may work with his concubines in Ghana but not sure how smooth he can be with the LGBTs.

The people we make friends with to some extent determine our character and what we may be willing to do.I am really disappointed at the fact that the President of Ghana will stoop so low as to call himself a friend of such a deviant as Andrew Solomon. Where is the fear of God that the President professes to have.
Does he read his bible at all? Has he
read 2nd Corinthians 6:14-17? Has he read 1st Corinthians 15:33-34? It is important that he reads it if indeed he is a christian as he professes. He does not need a homosexual as a friend or as his author for that matter. There are many astute authors the world over who are God-fearing and who could have helped him write or launch his book. By his(the President's) action he has opened Ghana further up for infiltration by homosexuals.
The Presidency must be above reproach by all means.

The Bible stated "Do NOT JUDGE" by you bashing gay/lesbians you no better than they are cause you are telling that what God don't accept. Are you God? NO. The Bible stated "Do NOT JUDGE" by you bashing gay/lesbians you no better than they are cause you are telling that what God don't accept. Are you God? NO. We are human being who are accepting who we are as one. Stop all the hating and focus on yourself and not on others. God is looking down on all of us who call themselves Christians when you as Christians are the main one turning your back on His children's. LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS CHRIST LOVE YOU. Does that mean anything to anyone of you? God love us no matter what. He just hates what we all do when it comes to our action.
Yes, it stated in the Bible that a man and a woman should be as one but in that world, you still have that man cheating on his wife, or beating her senseless, so in that world you not better than the gay/lesbians. Let them be and let God be the one to judge them not you as people.
Instead of focusing on gay/lesbian, focus on the world itself where people are getting rape, getting kill, children are being disrespectful to their elders, Ashantes/Ewe tribal hatings etc. Focus on that! God is LOVE and He LOVE everyone of us no matter what sin we can short of. HE'S A FORGIVEN GOD and if i'm a gay/lesbian who attend church and read the Bible then no man can tell me what God don't like cause i'm a gay/lesbian. Only the man upstairs can judge me not HUMAN beings. God will always love me no matter what anyone say. Stop the hating because God love us all.

The president may not have anything to do with Andrew Solomon, but personally I don't know what business he should have to do with such a man who has no fear for God - a gay. The man, by virtue of who he is, is evil and should not be associated with, most especially by a Ghanaian, not to talk of a public figure.

Everyone has their own personal relationship with God. No person on this earth has the divine power to judge anyone. Remember the bible was created as a guide of Gods plan to the word. Each account in the bible was from a person that God chose to have in his book. In the beginning God's plan was to populate the earth which is why he wanted man and a woman in that time period. In any case no other person has the power to judge another person because their secret sins could be fare worst than being Gay.
God loves the person but he hates sin. The biggest problem with Christians today is that they treat homosexuality as if it is a bigger sin than adultery, fornication, stealing, lying, etc. NO sin is greater than the other.

God saves gay men and lesbians and leads some men to partner together and some lesbians to partner together, just like He saves heterosexuals.
