The legalisation of small scale mining by the PNDC government has been a major failure. In fact it has allowed for major troubles in the mining areas of Ghana. Do not be surprised to hear and see in the near future, indigenes of these areas attacking the immigrant miners (most galamsey miners are immigrants to the area).

The colonials besides their greed must have foreseen these problems and thus their banning of small scale mining and their rigorouse enforcement of the ban. Small scale mining has done little to add to economic growth. In fact it has caused more harm than good, primarily environmental damage while at the same time curtailing agriculture in the mining areas.

In a recent visit to Dunkwa Finso I was told that there were 22,000 Chinese miners in the town with possibly the same number again living in the bush. There presence is so extensive that they have taken over the largest hotel in town from which they run 2 Chinese restaurants, a brothel (full of Chinese prostitutes), a disco and an illegal casino.

Thanks JJ and your revolutionary nitwits of the P/NDC for coming up with another brilliant idea!
