IN AS MUCH I AGREE WITH YOU, THE GHANAIAN TASTE FOR FOREIGN GOODS MUST ALSO BE ADDRESSED. AGAIN, THE LOCALLY PRODUCED RICE MUST BE DEVELOPED TO SUIT THE GHANAIAN TASTE. THANK YOU

  Ahisem, listen to the MP; he is calling for overhaul in rice production; this basically means the current production method is fraught with problems hence the low quality rice produced locally which in turn is the reason for the importation of rice; the MP is basically advocating for a change in the way rice is produced in ghana in order to suit the taste of ghanaians [as you claim] and once this is achieved rice importation will stop. please don't just jump to conclusion without analysing and synthesising other people's view points.

  In the early 1970s Gen. Ignatius Kutu Acheampong said that we must eat what we grow and must grow what we eat. The other day a nutritionist was trying to tell the whole world that olive our is better than groundnut oil and even sheabutter. However the olive seed is just like the sheabutter seed and it is milled passed through the same process like groundnut or shearbutter to extract oil.
  When we were young in the 60s it was only during Christmas or New Year that we heard of rice. We eat Ghanaian staples and look healthy and still look so than the youth of today.
  In the early 1980s as a result of draught we started to import rice. As the Breton Woods Institutions saw that our dependence on rice will tie us tighter to their apron string, they went further to advice us against even preserving food.
  During a conversation with a friend from Lebanon he told me that Lebanese eat what they grow which are wheat and potato. In our case we have a variety of tubers and cereals, then why do we depend on rice import. I hear this nutritionist saying that it is not proper to consume brown rice, thus the same person will tell us that it not proper for consuming unrefined sugar.
  It is also a fact that European, though presumed to be rich depend on potato and wheat and wheat type of cereals. A nutritionist was saying the other day that fermented corn is better than dry corn that is turned into powder and used to prepare food with a none-fermented cassava flour or milled cassava. However my observation shows that people in the Volta Region who eat mostly dried corn flour with milled cassava have less weight compared to those who eat fermented corn and cassava.
  Imagine our forefathers who just descended from the trees, begun to eat nuts, cereals and roots which for over hundred of thousand of years have become their diet. It makes a scientific sense when a person tell us today that those cereals, roots and nuts are not good for you. Economics and Nutrition as science should not only live on paper but must be made to walk and even talk. Agriculture and Nutrition must therefore be animated.
