So much debt piled up in a mere 4 years? So, what did the Mills-Mahama administration do with all that money? Not enough water, not enough electricity, horrible road infrastructure, poor health care, poor education, untold economic hardship on Ghanaians; poor everything! This is the so-called "Better Ghana Agenda?" These government people are thieves! Where is our money? Ablakwa alone had more than Ghc120,000 and US$90,000 in his personal vehicle! How much was he paid as a Deputy Information Minister? God help Ghana. Rawlings killed Utuka, Acheampong and others for stealing much less! One day, one day!! The day of reckoning is surely coming!!

This is BoG data.Actually nothing to do with NPP propaganda. Interestingly you are not contesting the report. The tendency of people like you to hero-worship your tin gods accounts for the continuing decline of our nation.
A 55.9% debt:GDP ratio for a country such as ours up from circa 29% should clearly send alaram bells ringing. Sycophancy from people like you is pretty unhelpful.

NOT AT ALL, THAT IS ABOMINATION IN DEMOCRACY, VERY SUICIDAL. HAD NDC MANAGED THE ECONOMY WELL, THESE ECONOMIC PROBLEMS WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN THE SITUATION. NDC HAS PRESIDED OVER THE BIGGEST RESOURCES GHANA HAS EVER HAD. THEY HAVE ALSO CONTRACTED MORE LOANS THAN ANY OTHER GOVERNMENT IN OUR HISTORY, BUT THEY HAVE NOTHING TO SHOW FOR THIS. GHANAIANS SHOULD HAVE ENJOYED SOME ECONOMIC PROGRESS AT THIS TIME IN OUR HISTORY. THE ECONOMY IS COLLAPSING BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT IS SO CORRUPT. TO RESCUE THE SITUATION, THE POOR IS NOW BEING FORCED TO PAY. THIS IS INJUSTICE. THIS IS NOT THE GHANA KUFFOUR HANDED OVER TO NDC, HE EVEN ADDED FRESH CRUDE OIL WELLS. NPP TRANFORMED GHANA TO A MIDDLE INCOME ECONOMY WITH LIMITED RESOURCES BUT GOOD POLICIES. NDC IS WOEFULLY REVERSING THESE NPP ACHIEVEMENTS. GHANA'S CURRENT SITUATION IS VERY DISTURBING. WHEN THE HISTORY IS TOLD, IT WILL BE SAID THAT GHANAIANS WERE OFFERED FREE SECONDARY EDUCATION, IMPROVED UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE, SOCIAL HOUSING FOR THE POOR AND AN EGALITARIAN SOCIETY BUT 50% SAID NO THANK YOU. THEY PREFERRED ECONOMIC "WOYOMISATION" , PHANTOM DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS, PHILANDERERS FOR LEADERS, MACHIAVELLIAN DISRESPECTFUL CORRUPT LOUTS AND A VISIONLESS EVIL GOVERNMENT. Let's all keep quiet and enjoy the fruits of our democratic choices. I am not in government. It is people entrusted with governance and who are paid well with a lot of perks whose job it is to make life easier for the Ghanaian masses. Does the NDC government have a heart? I left Ghana for my "other country" in North America just about a week ago. Just after I left, fuel prices went up. So, where is our money? Where did all the borrowed money go if the govt couldn't even subsidize fuel? In Nigeria, when there were riots after the govt hiked fuel prices last year, the govt there relented and reversed the hike. Can John Mahama do the same to offer some relief to the struggling average Ghanaian? Does John Mahama have a heart? Go figure!

Yes, Ghana's debt has risen and each Ghanaian, adult and young, owes some much, but l don't think that that is a crime. The writer must understand that what you do with a loan is what matters and not how much you owe. Fact is, if you invest borrowed monies in productive ventures you will be able to payoff your debt and still make giant progress.
The evidence available indicates that since the inception of NDC 2, all monies borrowed have been invested in productive ventures to better the lot of the good people of Ghana. Here, mention can be made of the numerous projects that have documented for all to see; those who have travelled to the countryside will attest to this fact. The problem with most Ghanaians is that they think that Accra, Kumasi and the other cities are the only places in Ghana, they don't just travel. Please travel to your village one of these days so you see the good things happening in this country.
Second and more important, Ghanaians rejected the empty promises of the NPP because they saw and appreciated the good things the NDC government was doing for them.
Now my advice, Elections are over and we have a well-focused government in place working for the Good people of Ghana. This government will deliver no matter what you do. Somebody shout Amenoooooooo00000000!!!!

Any one who tries to use Ghana's debt in 2008 as a measure of how the economy has perfoormed till now MUST take an urgent course in the PROCESSES that a country which adopts the HIPC initiative goes through.
One must know what happens to the bulk of the HIPC nations foreign debt at the time of adopting HIPC, and what happens as the HIPC process goes on over the years.
It willl only be enough for me to say that Ghana's debts, at the time of going HIPC were not totally forgiven as was painted or printed in this country.
The BULK of those debts were simply suspended, pending on reorganising the finances of the nation, and the MONIES which were supposed to be used for debt repayment were the ones that the nation was ALLOWED to use for its social and educational projects financing.
We talk much, but lack the indepth knowledge to understand issues before we delve into comparing situations.

@ Nana Yaw III. Thanks for educating the morons on these page, who have not the skills to analyse issues dispassionately. The reportage is about the nation's alleged debt stock, citing a report by the monetary policy committee of the BOG. Instead of jumping to comment on the issue raised by this report, we should be demanding from the authors to reproduce at least parts of the report for those of us who are not privy to the report to undertake a detailed analysis. What's the proportion of foreign debt vis a vis the local component? And as you rightly said, when the country went HIPPC, the nation's debt was not written off, the principal remained intact it was only the debt servicing component (interest and transaction costs) that were suspended, which most of the NPP apologists commenting on this report lack the education to analyse. Again what the authors conveniently failed to disclose is the ratio of this debt to GDP which is the normal economic accepted standard to determine if the country was in a position to service its debts. This is just to confirm Gabby's admission that, the NPP is determined to damage HE JDM politically without necessarily applying logic.

Nana Yaw please go back to school. It appears you have no clue about what the Monetary Policy paper reports highlighted. You should go back to school and leanr basic economics to help you understand the basic message of the article published herein by the author . You SSS education or degree from that latter day university or college has not equipped you enough to understand the issues raised by the MPC report. Your little knowledge about national income accounting is dangerous to for you and this society. Your blind partisanship coupled with your dearth economic knowledge does not help you to be objective with your comments.

I should go back to school? Which one? The same SSS or latter day university? I thought you implied that system taught me nothing worth writing home about.
By the way, I have no need to talk about the MPC report nor national income accounting. The crux of the news item is to tell readers that national debt has skyrocketed from 2008 levels by 248% in 4 years of NDC administration. And I guess your "earlier day" education teaches you that this is true. You swallow everything - hook, line and sink....- and talk about my education when you have no inkling of what HIPC reaaly mean to an economy.
Now you accuse me of blind partisanship (is it implied or deduced or a thing of prophesy?) and "dearth economic knowledge". You are very funny. Go back and read my comments again and return with something better.

Eno mpo nie. What we are talking about is the rate of increase in our national debt and what projects are there to show for it. The HIPIC initiative forgave some of our debts to allow the country to take on debt burdens that are sustainable. Debt perse is not bad provided we have something to show for it. We had debt relief from the IFIs but the rate we are pilling on debt will make up HIPIC again. Particularly when we are investing the moneies we take in productive ventures such as improving our water and Power situation. Basic infrastructure that allows us to attract Foreign Direct Investments. Go the the Bank of Ghana web site and you will see that FDI flows have reduced. This is what we are talking about. Borrow, but use it well. Dont use the money to pay fraudulent judgement debts and share among yourselves only to come and ask already suffering Ghanaians to pay more for fuel and brace ourselves for harder times. IF you need education, let the NPP people teach you. Dont pollute the forum with your half - baked knowledge, like the NDC MPs.

Let me start by reminding you that I was not interested in any party so I did not mention any in my comment. NO SINGLE PARTY IN THIS COUNTRY CAN MOVE US FORWARD. We all must join hands and work in unison, in spite of our political affiliations. At least I can teach you this basic developmental lesson for free.
Secondly, my choice of headline clearly summarises my thought on the way the article was written. For your information, a lot of misinformation went round and continue to go around (from what I have read in this article) about going HIPC and debt forgiveness. Please go to the world bank website and do some crush programme in HIPC politics before you come here to "educate" me on debt reliefs and skyrocketing rates of indebtedness.
I confess I find it difficult to understand your argument. You are talking about having something to show for the monies borrowed, and then productive ventures such as improving water and power. I don't get you. Are you saying government is investing in this sector or not?
Some of you base your arguments on judgement debts paid and forget to appreciate that most of these are acts that went through the legal system and were deemed as claimable; some, including the famous Woyome case. I do not support fraudulent deals, but you must know that if you breach a contract to satisfy your whims and caprices, the law is there for the other party to file a claim. If a court of law decided that a party be compensated, there is little you and I can do about it.
Finally, if you were an investor interested in investing in Ghana, and measured the political temperature in this country from the last part of 2012 up to yesterday, I will be grateful if you will tell me what your decision will be: Will you invest or not in Ghana? Be honest with the answer, and tell me if you have any idea as to why FDI flows have reduced.
Everybody need education, and I will subject myself to be educated by the NPP people if the can do that, devoid of political crap, and in an honest way. I will listen to them and analyse what they say and choose what I think is right. I do not swallow anything I see, hear or read.

So are you attributing our current ebt bill to pre-HIPC debts and accrued interests over the HIPC period? I do not think you have the facts either to lecture us. At least figures presented in this article clearly point to more than 4-fold borrowing by this government after taking over, but which has not been properly accounted for by way of infrastructural projects and provision of other services. What has that got to do with the consequences of the HIPC debt relief? Did they borrow the monies to service HIPC debts? What about the unprecedented resources in the form of oil, increased gold worth on the int market, peak cocoa yield and what have you? Our present crisis is nothing short of mismanagement of the economy by this inept government. We should stop this academic exercise of trying to justify the failure by the NDC government. Period!

KK, I do not see why you are trying to misinterpret me, because I’m not attributing our current debt bills to pre-HIPC debts and accrued interests over the HIPC period. A basic lesson on going HIPC is that by doing that you declare your nation bankrupt and can thus not access funds from traditional lending institutions. This explains why Kuffour went globe-trotting for funds to the extent that his government was reported to have attempted to borrow money from an institution whose head office was a hairdressing saloon in the UK. Do you remember that story?
We went HIPC and could then live only on grants and “savings” from suspended interests on loans and/or principals. We still needed funds and because we were bankrupt the traditional lenders were not there for us and we had to look elsewhere. When we surmounted most of the obstacles of the HIPC decision making processes and thus were considered “credit-worthy” we had to go back to lending to undertake other important projects that were on hold. This should explain to you the “surge” in borrowing. Is government using the loans for the right projects? That is an issue that must necessarily be discussed and debated without playing a blame-game and accusing one or the other.
If you asked me, I will personally say that there are alternative routes to development that does not require government borrowing. I know it and I know it will work in this nation provided we put ourselves to the task and work honestly end efficiently. To start with I hate to hear politicians come and tell us that “if we win, our government will provide this, that, and that.” We have outlived those days! The days of “we will provide” are over, and we must see ourselves where government operates ONLY as a regulatory and “facilitating” body, and left development to the private man. If you want the lecture on that I will enlighten you.
As far as the figures you are questioning are concerned, who told you they are not properly accounted for? The irresponsible guy who wrote the article of government debt stock above picked only one paragraph of a whole document to create panic and mischief, and that is not fair to the reader. For your information, though I’m not proud of it, Ghana’s debt to GDP ratio is better than many industrialized countries such as the US and Germany and France. Why not read the full BoG report and understand, for example what the causes of the current debt to GDP ratio? It is easy to accuse and label people as inept but take a look at your own inability to read and interpret a simple comment (as I originally posted), couple that with your total failure to read the BoG report, and you may think twice before condemning others.

GHANA NEEDS LEADERSHIP THAT UNDERSTANDS ECONOMICS. What the article's economic figures mean is that the NDC Leadership either does not understand how to guide the economy to improve the economy in building enterprise and jobs and/or, that the leaders of the NDC have as a primary concern the pilfering and embezzling of funds from the economy.
The economy of Ghana has fallen since losing the NPP leadership and being taken over by the NDC leadership. This lose of gifted NPP leadership has dropped the economy 248% from the level it was at when the NPP led. It also means that evey Ghanaian, even every child, has lost and is poorer by GHc 1,361.79. The NDC has mismanaged more money and has increased Ghana's endebtedness by more (by borrowering more in 4 years) than has been spent by all Ghana governments since Independence through to 2008.
What Ghana needs is a leader, a president, who is a dedicated Servant-Leader who understands economics and knows how to attract and develop enterprise in Ghana. That is to say, Ghana needs Nana Akufo-Addo as president.

Oho Statesman again. In as much as I am against corruption, judgment debt, boycotts by opposition in Parliament but receive pay and frivilous debt, I think the analysis of debt sustainability and the investment should be the guiding factor.
It turns out that Ghana is actually among the least indebted country in the world at GHS1,368.79 per capita whereas every American owes $37,435.
In fact these figures also show the level of development. Such that if we can raise our per capita GDP or lets assume we become well educated, have good industrial take of selfless politicians, eleiminate crime and obtain a debt up to the level of the USA; $37,485 we will surely become an advanced country like any other.
Considering the resource base we have it shows that we can eleiminate poverty if we have a visionary leader and meaningful opposition party than the NPP which is has has caused the country the greatest pain and inertia in our progress as they continue to do today.
How can these types of politicians collect all allowances and salaries but refuse to work, swearing-in boycott state of the nation address boycott, and protracted and useless court cases and so on.
