It is possible the doctors had no means of knowing all the organs the twins had in common prior to the separation.

In any case they did their best to save the twins. We should not blame them for things going wrong.

What is this! A complete 'tautology' in a sense which indicates the 'confused' state of the Doctors. They should say it all in a GO, and not feeding BITS into the medium, aggravating the parent of the 'dead' twins. However because of the useless form of education introduced during that stupid Rawlings' time, now the standard of Ghana's education has fallen from grace to grass. Ghanaian Doctors used to perform surgery with precision and confidence. It is just pathetic to hear people boasting of all kinds of degrees when in actual fact, the standard is simply below the 'O'Level of the good old days. I don't blame these quack Doctors but lay all the blame on this 'ofiri djato'(Rawlings) who brought about this shoddy type of education and sent all his children to be educated abroad. Anyway, this operation could have been done for free in Australia. Big shame on our politicians who continue to steal the country's money to further their egoistic agendas.

We don't kills people to learn when it comes to medicine. The first Siamese twins conjoined at the head were successfully separated in 1987. The should have taken time to research and know the kind of complications likely to arrive from such surgeries. They should all be tried for murder

They gave their very best for the twins on the basis of the information they had, but could not save them. They could not possibly have known the extent to which the organs of the twins were joined.

Let us stop this debate and encourage the medical team to learn from this experience for future surgeries. Lives may subsequently be saved.

And they are not even ashamed to air their ignorance even when the whole world is watching. When lives are are stake, there is nothing like a nice try. I can tell you of situations in which doctors in Ghana have prescribed wrong combination of medicines to patients because they were too arrogant to ask the pharmacists for the correct combinations and doses. How could such a challenging clinical operation even began without you Doctors properly making sure that every thing that might cause danger to the patient is carefully studied to avoid any death or harm to the patient life?

You can not use human beings as pigs for research work and turn round to give unacceptable excuses. The Doctors and their team should be held responsible for murdering these innocent twins. Period!

To be frank the first question that came in mind as I follow the surgery, was have the Doctors taken the proper decisions, timing, made all the proper clinical research, X'rays and then came the shocking picture of the surgery theater that horrified me as it looks like a butchers place without the normal expectant modern clinical equipments, with an old dirty oxygen cylinder by their side.

The entire Ghana hospital system is a complete death trap. No wonder the criminally corrupt heartless politicians always fly to foreign countries with their families for medical treatments.

Hopefully, the pathetic death of our late President Atta Mills shamefully at a maternity hall, the untold rates of maternity deaths killing mothers with their unborn babies and the sorrowful news of the death of the twins should be a wake up call on our health authorities and government.

Please, stop paying dubious settlement monies into individual criminal pockets, the huge unnecessary budget deficits and let's put our national priorities and needs first.

Healthy human resource is the foundation of a sound economy.

To say you did not know they shared certain structures or bowel means you did not have all the facilities to investigate thoroughly, hence you should not have proceeded with the surgery. I will not mind if they died of unpreventable complications, but to suggest inadequate evaluation prior to surgery suggest some desire to be heroic and perhaps borders on negligence.

If you have resources to raise funds to even bring experts from abroad which some of us could have facilitated, that should have been done and eventually pressure would be put on the government to help resource all the top hospitals in Ghana. Sadly there are people in Ghana able to afford private jets, rolls-royce as as politicians. There is no single Ghanaian politician- MP or Minister, who does not drive a 4x4, and we cannot afford an MRI scan in all our Regional hospitals- this is the disaster we should be debating as a country.

You need paediatrician (neonatologists), paediatric cardiologists, paediatric anaesthetists, paediatric intensive care specialisits as well the specialist paediatric surgeons and nurses.
Whereas equipment is important it is the team approach to assessment, planning, operation and postoperative care that determines survival or otherwise.
This is a wakeup call to all health professionals to demand and embrace team working. The public deserves and must demand high standards from its hospitals

What did were we expecting out of our doctors when the Ghana College of physicians and surgeons was quickly set up and any one who passed and exam became a 'specialist'?
Not sure how many paediatric surgeons there are in KATH?? Probabaly one or 2.
I think Ghana needs to reconsider it's decision to train specialists locally- there are not enough specialists and subspecialists to run these postgraduate taining- at least a part of teh postgraduate training must be done outside , especially for delicate specialities like paediatric surgery, plastics radiology etc!

This case should be discussed at the mortality conference at KATH so that those involved can learn from it.I am a physician and I commend the docs for the bold attempt but in modern medicine, there is no room for '' WE DID NOT KNOW THEY SHARED SINGLE INTESTINES" BECAUSE there is a way to evaluate BEFORE SURGERY.Please this was not an emergency but an elective surgery .

Most of these Doctors would be languishing in jail had it not been practicing in Ghana. This is not the first negligence; many have died in the hands of these strike-loving-know-nothing Doctors (excluding the ones always not in support of strike at the expense of precious lives) after suffering from less critical sicknesses. The painful thing is that, they walk away free without any legal slaps on them.
What is wrong if you invite experts from other countries or from other hospitals?
I hope they don't begin blaming lack of equipments and less favorable environment; the reason you should not even dare to operate!
These guys ought to be held accountable for the passing of the twins.
I hope Ghanaians now would understand why they do not deserve some increments the same way they will condemn any foolish strike action coming from them.

WE ARE GUIDED, PROFESSIONALLY, BY THE ETHICAL PRINCIPLES OF AUTONOMY[in this case the involvement of Surrogate decision makers, usually the parents], BENEFICENCE, NONMALEFICENCE AND JUSTICE. God knows we all make mistakes[ lots of them ] all the time; that is why Malpractce insurance is otherwordly.
While we all have to learn from our mistakes, every now and then, it is usually how we handle ourselves honestly and diplomatically that can make or unmake us. I CAN UNDERSTAND THE EXCITEMENT THAT CAN GO WITH BEING "PIONEERS"; NEVERTHELESS, YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN TALKING TOO MUCH PRIOR TO THE PROCEDURE AND THE UNFORTUNATE AFTERMATH, THEREOF. If you have not done adequate pre-surgical imaging studies to feel comfortable to perform this very publicised, but non-emergent( to my knowledge ) procedure then you really must have the courage of a wild hog to be so media-loving about it. The complications/mortalities are astronomically high, even under the best of circumstances. BEN CARLSON LEARNT IT THE VERY HARD AWAY IN FAR AWAY INDONESIA(?).

Again, may God bless you all abundantly for your unparalled dedication. Don't hang your heads; be remorseful but not shameful. JUST LEARN TO SHUT THE FUCK UP, SOMETIMES.
