How JB Danquah became a prisoner at Nsawam...

Baffour Akoto and seven others. (preventive detention order-CPP)

J.B. Danquah passionately defended these seven and demanded that they be brought to trial according to Habeas Corpus Act of 1861 which demanded that "the court is required to enquire into the truth of the grounds of facts contained in the 'grounds' upon which the Governor General was satisfied that the order was necessary to prevent the us (detainees) from acting in a manner prejudicial to the security of the state". However, Mr Geoffrey Bing acting on behalf of the government dismissed this as a wrongful application of the Habeas Corpus of 1861 in this matter stating that "the Act under which we were detained rests plenary discretion in the President (i.e. Nkrumah) and if he is satisfied that such an order is necessary...If the order is lawful then the detention is lawful" (See more of Dr J.B. Danquah and Mr. Bings arguments on Pages 63 to 66) of "Struggle Against Dictatorship" by Bafuor Osei Akotowho. J.B. Danquah in his great effort to defend these seven detainees earned him a Cell no. 9 beside baffuors Cell no. 10 at Nsawam Prisons, where he never came out.
