The point here is that, these countries (Togo and Benin) were in the country asking for AN INCREASE in the power Ghana supplies to them. They claim that their demand for power has increased!!. Well guess what: our demand for power has also INCREASED. So now the question is do we give them power over and above what was bilaterally agreed upon?. Common sense tells me that, we should put our house in order FIRST before we think of giving them EXTRA POWER (which by the way is above what was mutually agreed). Unless of course the agreement states that we are obilged to give them extra power anytime they demand it.

On a different note I believe our neighbours are not doing anything strange by asking now, as agreements can be made to take effect from when our own production is upgraded with solar and or what have you which I'm sure is in the pipeline. they are being proactive rather than reactive.The need more in the future and talking about it today is right.

I mean, what is actually going on in Ghana? Why can't our so-called "rocket scientist" come out with other alternatives rather than relying on Akosombo? When Akosombo was commissioned, what was our population and why can't these fools leading us, think that we have multiplied since that day and as such, something should be done to support Akosombo to generate power to Ghanaians?

Haruna Iddrisu, the foolish Northerner, who was asking how safe are his people in the Ashanti region, said, " If NDC wins power, they will have no excuse as there are so many options open for them to generate power to all and sundry. So, the question is, what are they doing as they have won power and why is the nation still experiencing power outages?

NDC will give excuse that the same thing happened under Kufuor but here is the different. When Kufuor was in power, Akosombo nearly dried but what about now? The Dam is at its hilt and still, NDC is giving excuses which makes no sense exposing their reckless and idiocy.

Under the international agreement on management of international rivers/waterways, Ghana was obligated to meet the energy needs of Togo and Upper Volta (Bourkina Faso) because the Akosombo Dam would (and is) being fed by the White and Black Volta and Oti rivers.

However, the national need must surmount the needs of our neighbours. If at the end of the day Ghana has superfluity of power, then our neighbours' needs would then be addressed.

I was personally angry when despite the international agreement, Bourkina Faso went ahead to dam the White Volta!!! This temporarily created energy problems for Ghana. Anyway, events overtook that dark era.

What I'm saying right now is that Ghana must be self-sufficient in energy needs before looking across her borders.

No, you are wrong here. International Law is on their side. We cannot tell them to go away untill we solve our problems first. What do they tell their citizens? That will only force them to develop their own sources and our dams will dry up. Remember Togo has a better hydro site on the Oti and Dayi rivers? I hope you don't want to get angry again!!!

If you haven't been to Ghana before and you see that arctlie, the first impression you will have is that Ghana is a farm cos the only thing the journalist had to talk about business related, was how one farmer was seeking to make more money through exports this year and how he might not have to carry his products over a longer distance to get them exported because he can afford a tractor as soon as his exports yield some more dollars this time around as if there is fair trade around the system these days. As if the rest of the world doesn't dictate how much they want to buy our gold and cocoa for and then they, thesame people will step back and say, yoh we don't understabd Africa, they have all the raw products but they are still poor Who makes Africa poor when she is not lazy? Who makes Africa poor when she is giving her best? Who? Who makes Africa poor?Let's talk about that farmer again. If there were no harbours, if there were no prudent and hardworking business men, if there was no stock exchange, how will his products be bargained for? How will his goods be exported to Europe? How will he spend or use the money in cedis?Please, please, please, let's not talk of the war in Africa. If you wish to, then let's talk of it. Who makes the guns? Who produces the bombs? Who funds the terrorists? Don't point at Africans because our industries (And we are going to begin that industrial revolution soon; well it has begun) don't make guns, we don't make bombs and atomic whateva's. The last time I saw my African brothers and sisters, all I remember were smiles, goodwill, hospitality and determination brimming in eyes that wont sink till the fires have burnt. Those countries are entitled to the power and water as riparian countries of the Volta. We have to be carefull here. As upstream riparians, they can hurt us badly if they decide to develope their own supply on the same Volta.

Those of you who are using the present temporary difficulties of dum sor dum sor as a yardstick are also being unncessarily emotional. Ghana has always supplied these countries for years without the supply situation in Ghana getting this bad. Efforts are very well underway to solve the current crisis. So if we act on the basis of the current crisis what happens next? I know most commentators do not believe that Ghana has a great potential as a net electricity exporter in the region. But that is a fact and it will be realised within a decade or two.

So chill a little, all of you.

Yours is the same emotional stuff we are trying to get others away from. However, painfull the situation of power shortage may be, do not forget that our neighbours who are asking for more, are actually asking for what they are entitled to as riparians - countries that share the Volta Basin with us. Their request is covered under international law and under conventions to which Ghana is a signatory, e,g, the UN Convention on Non-Navigable Uses of Shared Water Courses and the Volta Basin Commission. Thus we cannot just tell them off. Then they might go and seek their own solution unilaterally which could in turn hurt us even more. Note that they are upstream riparians - especially Togo which has excellent dam sites on the Oti and Dayi rivers, important contributors to the water that generates the power at Akosombo. So please pipe down and see the point we are making.

As for aviation fuel, your anger is wrongly placed. I am sure you know that the fuel industry is de-regulated. It is private companies that import the aviation fuel into the country. If they have not broken any law or agreement by not importing enough or not importing at all government cannot do anything. It can only exhort them as the NPA did recently. This is one of the downsides of private market behaviour.

Those in charge of overseeing the production of electricity should be held accountable for their jobs.They should ensure that all towns and villages in Ghana get electricity before exporting it to other countries.Much as we need foreign exchange, the needs of the rural people who produce the bulk of our food and raw materials should be met first.The Electricity Corporation is one of the most corrupt government agencies in the country.National, regional and district managers of the agency abuse their authority and nobody holds them accountable.They sell metres which are supposed to be free.Landlords are made to pay bribes before their homes are connected to power lines.In some cases they are told to pay for the electricity poles.These corrupt officials impede the progress of the agency and should be removed.We should learn from power outages in Nigeria. There are competent Ghanaians overseas. What was once a brain drain should be turned into a brain gain by enticing these professionals to come back home. Stop the politics of exclusion. Amend the consttution to include all Ghanaians in the development of the economy.How do we get a different result when we continue to rely on the same clueless and corrupt officials who use the same old approaches?If we don't change our behaviour, our oil find won't help us either.
