How about the mechanics, truck pushers, driver's apprentices etc? Many of these young girls get pregnant along the way due to bad influences and sometimes lack of parental control. It is a pity to have your daughter pregnant while in school. She can certainly not cope with the rigors of school work while being pregnant.
Another more serious side effect is not the right to education but the fact that she may not be able to have children again the future because child birth could destroy her 'immature' reproductive system at the time of delivery of the unplanned/impulsive pregnancy.

If the school is a boarding school, such girls should become day students if possible. Dismissing pregnant girls leads to abortions, wasted resources and under development. That is why in public schools in the US for example no pregnant girl would be dismissed. It is about time we put an end to it in Ghana.

Let us always try and come up with a solution when a situation of this sort arises, it is an opportunity for us to crack our brains, and I tell you that is how the advanced countries achieved what they have right now. Instead of focusing primarily on teaching our young people to prepare to take the BECE, we should immerse them in learning about their bodies. The mission of schools is to help children grow into productive responsive adults who help to make the world a better place.

Yet many of our young people don't feel connected to their bodies, their communities, and their country at large.

The roles that our schools have of producing, well-taught, prepared and patriotic Ghanaian citizens have been replaced by pressure from high-stakes testing from GES. The sole mission of schooling is to do everything possible to pass the BECE & and the WASSCE.
Many a kid & a lass stay up late, burning the midnight oil, cramming and bunking.

If we want our students to do better at school, stop making babies and focus on their studies, then we need to do things differently.
For example, we should see to it that:
1. the relationship between adults and children are respectful;
2. everyone- staff, students, and parents feel a sense of belonging;
3. students have opportunities for self-direction and collaboration;
4. the curriculum is challenging and engaging;
5. and the school promotes safety and community.

Trust me, if we are able to do what I have suggested here, our students babies will stop making babies.

liberal ones.This might be Nature's way of correcting low birth rates among adults and ensuring the survival of the Human Race.

In reference to adolescent/adult relationship,the conflict has existed since the days of Jacob and Esau - in the Bible.And both Socrates(470BC-399BC) and Plato(427BC-347BC) complained about the"youth of today".

Socrates was reported to have said:"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners,contempt for authority;they show disrespect for
elders and love chatter in place of exercise.Children are now tyrants,not the servants of their households.They no longer rise when elders enter the room.They contradict their parents, chatter before company,gooble up dainties at the table,cross their legs,and tyrannize their teachers." Adolecents are not in general,going to buckle under traditional norms and values most the time.It happens in Moscow,Beijing,Washington,DC.,Tokyo,Cairo,Mexico City,Accra,Nairobi and Pretoria.

"Babies" will not stop making babies anywhwere in the world.However, enlightened societies recognize this reality and make some adjustments to accommodate these pregnant girls - so that,they and their children do not become a liabilty to society when they grow up.After all,if Nature's own actions(like conjoined twins, earthquakes,tsunamis,children's cancers,et al)are not perfect,why do some folks think adolescents should be perfect?

We as a society are too much focused on testing our young ones, and not adequately preparing them academically and for the world of work. I also stated that the relationship between adults and our young people are not based on mutual respect.
And I lamented the fact that our school's curriculum are not challenging, fun and engaging enough for our young people to keep them focused.

Yes, there are troublling instances of teenage pregnancy worldwide, but we in Ghana don't have the safety net to deal with what is becoming an unacceptable menace.

Brother Marcus,if we are faced with a potential population explosion,which we don't have the resources to mitigate,then we should also consider offering sex education in our senior schools,in addition to abstinence.

In fact,we should offer free condoms(the "moralists" will hit the roof )to students in the senior schools - IF PARENTS CONSENT.This will protect the girls from pregnancy,HIV,other sexually transmitted diseases and slow down the potential population explosion.

I'm sure both of us now agree that nothing can stop teenagers from having sex and getting into trouble - despite interventions in schools, churches,mosques and at home.The question now is,will the public and leaders accept some of the propositions?

what we should be discussing is the underlying factors that may lead to girl child pregnancy -poverty, unscrupulousness of men/boys (TEACHERS /DADS/PASTORS/TRADITIONAL LEADERS/FAMILY MEMBERS/ CLASSMATES /COMMUNITY LEADERS) promiscuous girls, rape, lack of parental control, absence of father figures and so on.

We should not also forget the torture these girls go through at home, community and school. Sacking them from the school does not solve the problem, though in some instances it may serve as a deterrent, the problem is not solve until the underlying factors are addressed. Parents, teachers, community leaders, churches, mosques must join hands together to find a solution to these problems.

Having and exercising rights is not enough, there should be equal emphasis on the responsibilities too.

In some areas of our nation, girls who became pregnant continue their education after birth at other schools. At least this approach not only ensure that they get the basic education needed but also reduced the shame that these girls may entertain should they continue or go back to their former school. The students would eventually know of these girls but it is none of their.

We therefore need a multi-faceted approach to this lingering problem in our nation

Those who impregnate minors should be dealt with accordingly irrespective of their social status in the community.

Dismissing pregnant school kids from school outright is not good; it indeed infringes on their right to education. However, leaving them in the mainstream schools tends to do the following:
- sets bad example
- encourages other girls to emulate.
- many of the young to be mothers can not pay strict attention to rigorous lectures and learning
- poor attendance due to sleepiness, and possible medical complications
- poor academic performance (same as above), and stress- both physical and psychological.
--etc...
In the country or province that I reside, such young pregnant pre-college/university girls are indeed removed from the mainstream schools to special schools in certain districts. These schools have special teachers. The lessons are not structured as rigorous. The young to-be-mothers are also given parental lessons on childcare, home care, home making, etc...
After they deliver their babies, baby feeding and breast feeding periods are included in their daily academic agenda. After 18, they are provided with accommodation in the community.(Note; I am not guessing. This is because, as a Trainee Public Health Inspector many years ago, I had the opportunity to inspect the kitchen of such an institution and I got briefed on the program, believe me).
Dismissing them outright is not good. I am however hopeful that in the nearest future, the first cycle education program in Ghana will be re-structured to cater for such unfortunate girls.

So the schools laws conflicts with the country's laws and still the school's laws stands.And by the why do they dismiss only the girls? What about the guys who get the girls pregnant ooutside the schools and those in the schools? So annoying that these schools are ruining these girls lives just because they got pregnant. I am yet to know how someone's pregnancy will affect the schools work.

It is simple for you to just insult everyone involved in such a situation. Some wrongs have been committed in the past but that was not idiotic. It was supposed to be a deterrent to those who dared. In elementary schools, I knew those who got pregnant were allowed to stay at home but went to another school they were delivered because of the stigma and the name calling the girl's peers would visit on her (you know teenagers). In the Secondary it was about the same except that many of the girls lost their education not because the schools dismissed them but parents refused to send them back to school after delivery because they felt let down by the daughters. Many young boys have also lost their education for impregnating other school going girls. So the impression should not be created as though girls have losing out all the time. I know many girls who have gone back to school after child birth. They are not allowed to stay in the school for moral reasons after all the school is for children and not adults.
In the Teachers' Schools, those who are duly married are allowed to go back home to have their children having deferred their studies and come back to continue. Many teachers who have impregnated school girls have had their licences withdrawn if their cases have brought before school authorities. No one really dismisses a school girl for getting pregnant but the atmosphere makes them 'sack themselves' to return later in another school.

The rise of NGOs in the country invariably sponsored by foraign interests is a serious concern. Foreign interests are using these NGOs to influence decision-making in our country.

We call on President Mahama to review the activities of these NGOS and their Ghanaian collaborators, and ensure that they are kept in check. They cannot tell us what to do.
