  The essence of free trade is mostly to encourage competition but not at the expense of our local industries. western countries subsidise most of their agricultural products so as to stifle the competition from African countries. their products are therefore cheaper than that produced in our countries and, coupled with the mentality that European products are ''better'' we are more than vulnerable if we dont put policies in place to protect our industries.
