unless we all do something about the situation at the harbour, nothing will change.i suggest that every single person that gives comments of this forum should find the personal address of the president and send our views to him. it is not a joke anymore. we can not just sit and allow this to carry on forever. the custom offices are a law on themselves. they believe the harbour is their personal property. there is no point of telling what goes on there. it is just sicking. many people who work so hard through the bitter cold weather just to survive, save some money and buy a car and they decide to treat you with contempt when you are ready to clear it from the harbour. unless all these government institutions are privaticed, these practises will continue for ever and no one can stop it. we can shout as much as we want and it will never change.we need to take action.

We do a yeoman's job for our country under difficult circumstances. If this lady can afford to buy an expensive electronic hair dryer then she should be prepared to pay the right amount of taxes that the government of her country Ghana has stipulated. The customs officer is only an agent of the national revenue generating service. If he or she chooses to circumvent what the mandated duties are, that is on the individual and there will be a price a pay. My dear Brothers and sisters, before you send cars or goods home to Ghana, find out what duties would be levied on them so you can advise yourself whether it is worth while. Last year when late President Mills was at the DC Town Hall meeting, an appeal was made to him about the high taxes on vehicles. Until there is accountability in the Ghanaian system, we will always be calling names.

Atta Mills just paid a courtesy call at the ports and this was reported on tv and that was the end of the matter; no action; no resolution; nothing. The stealing goes on from customs and government officials to destroyers of Ghana and nobody including the president of the republic sees no need to take action.
Is it surprising that now all Ghanaians are finding a kuluulu way out to avoid paying what is due to the government. I for one, will never send anything through the ports of Ghana. I will spend my money where I am and then buy what I need when I am there.

Tax evaders will always find a way round and importers can and do present fictitious payment receipts as well as invoices and packing lists. Is it always the customs officers who are corrupt? Customs officers serve as auditors to examine the actual products and quantity of items that are physically present in a consignment and apply the appropriate classification and applicable duties thereon. I believe the internet GCNET is also being used.
It is not as simple as you believe but if we can all commit to do our part, we can make constructive criticisms.

Corruption abounds everywhere two people conspire to bypass laid down procedures any where not only in the tax paying arena. "Kro biara mensah wo mu" Don't just label customs officers as corrupt. We do a yeoman's job for our country under difficult circumstances. If this lady can afford to buy an expensive electronic hair dryer then she should be prepared to pay the right amount of taxes that the government of her country Ghana has stipulated. The customs officer is only an agent of the national revenue generating service. If he or she chooses to circumvent what the mandated duties are, that is on the individual and there will be a price a pay. My dear Brothers and sisters, before you send cars or goods home to Ghana, find out what duties would be levied on them so you can advise yourself whether it is worth while. Last year when late President Mills was at the DC Town Hall meeting, an appeal was made to him about the high taxes on vehicles. Until there is accountability in the Ghanaian system, we will always be calling names.

Another area where the government is losing money is the'Goods in Transit' regime.This is where goods are imported to another country through our ports.Normally because they are not consumed in the country duty is not paid on them.In some cases these goods end up being unloaded in the country and sold without duty being paid on them.Officials to escort such goods to the points of deparure are bribed to turn a blind eye to such crimes.Then also there is the multiple exportation of goods[salt,plywood etc]with a single Minisry of Trade export permit.An export permit issued to export 50 bags of salt will be used to export about 100 bags of salt.Through such criminal activities the government is losing huge sums of revenue.And ghanaians will turn round and blame the government instead of reporting such criminal activities for the appropriate actions to be taken.Government officials whose actions lead to loss of money by the state should be severely punished-they should be prosecuted,jailed and their assets seized and banned from holding any public office for life.Ghanaians should be encouraged to report corruption by government officials by the offer of good financial rewards.So many government officials are living lifestyles far more expensive than their wages and yet no action is taken against them.IT IS HIGH TIME THE GOVERNMENT TREATED WHITE COLLAR CRIMES IN CEPS WITH THE SERIOUSNESS IT DESERVES.Most CEPS ooficials are just there to make money.
