  Renowned legal practitioner Ace Anan Ankomah says the Ghana police on their own can compel the production of the accident vehicle of opposition politician Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
  
  The police do not necessarily need to invoke the powers of a court – as they stated in their letter to the New Patriotic Party – to direct that the accident vehicle be handed over, he said.
  
  The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Thursday wrote to the opposition NPP directing that the vehicle with which the party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2012 election had a serious accident be produced . IDIOTIC POLITICIANS MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE US FOR A RIDE.

  Two Peruvians are standing trial in an Oslo City Court in Norway for allegedly stealing crown jewels belonging to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in 2012.
  
  The two accused persons, Luis Angel Acosta Barrios, 44, and Jaime Benigno Valverde Figueroa, 42, face a little over two years in jail if found guilty.
  
  Barrios is said to have picked the bag containing the crown jewels, while Figueroa is alleged to have been the driver for the operation.
  
  An accomplice, Maria Elena Ayma Ludena, who is alleged to be the brain behind the disappearance of the jewels, is in prison custody in Peru. The authorities in Norway are, however, seeking the extradition of Ludena to Norway to face trial.
  
  The court, presided over by Mr Torjus Gard, will give its judgement in April.
  
  The prosecutor, Asmund Riegels, is asking for a year and a half prison sentence for Barrios and two years two months term for Figueroa because of his previous criminal record.
  
  According to the prosecution, Figueroa was a jailbird who had served seven sentences between 2005 and 2012 in Sweden. The two Peruvian suspects were arrested in Sweden in October 2012 when they escaped with their booty but were extradited to Norway to face prosecution.
  
  At the court sitting Thursday, counsel for Barrios, Mrs Christine Hamborgstrøm, prayed the court to reduce his sentence because he had helped the police to find the goldsmith who bought the gold and that he had pleaded guilty from the beginning.
  
  Counsel for Figueroa, Mr Stein Erik Ottesen, asked the court to acquit his client because he played very little role in the disappearance of the gold.
  
  Figueroa had admitted that he had been driving the car, but said he did not know that the others (Barrios and Ludena) were going to do anything criminal.
  
  The three had gone to Oslo to work. On the day of the crime, they went to the Gardermoen Airport in Oslo, where they saw Otumfuo’s delegation. At the airport, Barrios was said to have seen a lady carrying a designer bag which he tried to take but did not succeed.
  
  The trio then followed the delegation to the hotel where CCTV images showed Ludena, the lady among them, court the porter’s attention, while Barrios snatched a laptop bag from the baggage trolley.
  
  At 8 p.m. that same day (October 10, 2012), the car used by the suspects was stopped by the police in Stockholm in Sweden because the driver (Figueroa) was drunk. A search in the car did not reveal anything, but the names of the passengers were written down.
  
  With the Oslo Police in Norway sending out pictures from a video showing the theft, followed by the issuance of arrest orders for the trio, Barrios was arrested at the Arlanda Airport, outside Stockholm, while Figueroa was arrested at the outskirt of Stockholm.
  
  After his arrest, Barrios gave the police the name of a goldsmith in Stockholm who received 5.3 kilogrammes of the jewels and melted them.
  
  Otumfuo Osei Tutu lost his crown jewels in the lobby of the Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel in Oslo on October 10, 2012. By October 18, the two suspects had been arrested.

  This dude Ace Ankomah or whatever he calls himself doesn't know what he is talking about. No one on this planet is compelled by law to stay at the scene of an accident 24 hrs after it happened. It is the job of the Police to be at the scene of an accident within 24 hrs to make a report and start investigation. If the vehicle is left the scene of the accident after 24 hours, the police cannot compel anybody to look for it. It sounds so amazing that these fools will be sitting at Accra looking for a car that had an accident one week ago at Bole. How far was the accident to nearest police station? No wonder they are looking for the courts to rescue them from this embarassment. Ghana Police don't know their left from their right.

The NPP would not and does not want Nana as presidential candidate for 2016. The next logical person after Nana is Bawumia but the NPP does not want a Northerner and a Pepeni presidential candidate so Bawumia must die to pave way for another Akan. That is NPP for you. Sir John and the NPP plotted this to take place in President Mahama's village to make it look like an NDC plot. With the plot failed, Sir John tows the vehicle to erase all traces of the plot. Sorry Bawumia, you are a big stooge to be dumped at all cost. Bawumia, you are Northerner and a Pepeni unfit to lead NPP therefore you must die. So sad but that is NPP for you. ARREST SIR JOHN NOW.   Swift and decisive action when the whole administration is focused on prviding a justification for a dubious pilgrimage to Israel?
  I have serious doubts if the current govt has learnt any useful lessons from the experience it gained in the past 4 years? Can anybody envisage the kind of turmoil this Mahama administration would have encountered if it did not have control of the legislature? The level of timidity being demonstrated is beyond belief,and that,in a large measure,has emboldened some 'loose canons' from the NPP and the media,to flout the laws of this country!
  How can a wing of a party seeking to annul close to 5 million votes in court,then turn around to hold rallies across the country chanting voceferiously 'LET MY VOTE COUNT'.
  If Pres Mahama and his team do not jettison the seige mentality they are operating under(self-imposed, and lacking any justification whatsoever) they`ll awaken from their slumber, and find that even their core supporters have deserted them! This has been the 'game plan' of the NPP since 2008,and I am amazed at the govt`s response thus far.

  The police know they have these powers! If the accident victim had been an ordinary driver, they would have pulled him in for "escaping from ther site oif an accident" or something similarly weird.
  
  The reason why they cannot touch Bawumia's car is that they have a bad conscience. They know they've done things to assist a particular political party that they should NOT do, being an impartial force. As is said, "The thief runs away when no-one is chasing him" They are afraiud of being accused of one thing or other if they go by the investigation of this sensitive case ib the normal way. Why? They know what they have done in the past.
  
  So, please warn the police to behave in such a way that the whole country can repose TOTAL CONFIDENCE in the force.Once all political factions believe they can trust in the integrity of the police, they themselves will run to the police and seek police assistance when odd things hapopen to them. A lack of trust in the police does not descend from heaven. It ius earned -- by police action or, especially inaction. A propos of police inaction -- have you heard any more about the people arrested in Northern Ghana for attempting to get "pink sheets" signed asfter the election?

  The police have no inherent powers to order the production of the car--they might have that powers only if the car was involved in a criminal enterprise--and even that whatever pieces of evidence gathered might have been compromised---the police was supposed to have secured the scene of the accident,interviewed eyewitnesses,and the victims themselves--none of these procedures were followed--therefore any so-called evidence may not be of any probity---this lecturer must go back and refresh his notes on police powers as related to accidents where all the above protocols were ignored by the police--these police officers most of the time do not know their duties and follow the orders of political appointees---the police should take this case to Court I can assure you they will be thrown out.

  Renowned only in the fish bowl of Ghanaian politics. Traffic accidents are investigated on site. That is where investigators record skid marks and all other pertinent information. Not when the vehicle has been towed hundreds of miles to a repair garage. This idea of the Police looking for the vehicle to carry out investigations is laughable and even more ludicrous to suggest that Police time should be wasted prosecuting the repair shop owner. There are hundreds of fatal crashes on our roads every year some more horrific and resulting in death. What is so exceptional about Bawumia's accident that the nation should come to a halt to investigate. He should thank his lucky stars and be sensible next time.
  
  People should be sensible and drive at safer speed and not zoom across the country in their 4 X 4s like racing lunatics.

  THE PERSON WHO HAD THE ACCIDENT IS A RESPONSIBLE CITIZEN AND SHOULD BE MADE TO PRODUCE THE VEHICLE AND ASSIST IN INVESTIGATIONS. LET US STOP THIS IMMATURE BEHAVIOUR IN THIS COUNTRY.
