  The government should be very careful in any policy that transfers the total provision of electricity in the hands of private companies. If the private sector is empowered to provide the country's total electricity supply, the rate of tariffs will go up every year, regardless the financial situation of consumers; the government is likely to provide subsidies to alleviate the hardship if people have difficulty in paying the electricity bills. And this will resurrect the argument about subsidy which the government is struggling to contain now. Private companies are in business solely to make profit and how they achieve the profit does not, necessarily, depend on the people's ability to afford the rate - they expect the government to make good the difference - especially, when the companies have monopoly to supply, as will be in the case electricity if the companies are given the mandate to supply the country.
