If you don't accurately identify the causes of a problem, you are unlikely to find the right cure. It is therefore most sad to read the Fire Service's conclusion on the incessant fire outbreaks. Definitely a key player, but AMA i s not the sole actor in this.

At the heart of the problem is the gross incompetence of the Fire Service! It is the Service that is responsible for Education, Monitoring and Evaluation (including inspections) and Prosecution. Surely AMA has to to implement their recommendations. But the core of the problem is ATTITUDINAL! People do all the things that invite fires in the markets and if patriotic citizens report it to the Service, their corrupt personnel go and collect bribes from the perpetrators and disappear!

EPA, MLGRD, all of us as citizens who see danger but think it does not concern them, etc are all to blame. So this PRO's shifting the blame onto AMA as if they are innocent and some other people are not doing what should stop the fire outbreaks is the usual Ghanaian disease of blaming all others but themselves!

Let us all let the Fire Service know that it is they who have the responsibility to galvanise all efforts to ensure a fire-free Ghana and they must not shift the blame!!!

Mr Patriot what are you talking about? What the Fire Officer is saying is perfectly true. Or is it that you dont understand what he is trying to say? He is saying that the AMA is not enforcing technical details (I suppose in buildings and at public places) which the Fire Service demand. This is important for the safety of all of us the public. With this dumso thing going on, fires can start anywhere at anytime. However damage and fatalities can be minimized or even avoided if buildings are built with specifications that the Fire Service recommend.

The AMA on its part appears not to be cooperating in this regard. It appears that the AMA has now become a republic on its own. One wonders what the Mayor and his retinue of Assembly-men do on a daily basis. Accra is in such a mess that the AMA has actually made itself irrelevant. People are building anything anywhere. Noise -especially from churches and akpeteshie as well as beer bars have reach a demonic level. As for sanitation lets not go there. Accra - any part of it, smells to high heavens. As for the markets the filth and stench there can only be compared with what pertains in the worse parts of hell. To abandon our poor mothers, wives, sisters and daughters to the perils of the unacceptable insanitary conditions in the markets in Accra can only be considered as a cardinal sin.

The AMA is the administrative head of the capital city of Accra. When have we ever heard of the Mayor addressing the squalid conditions in which people live in in Jamestown, Nima, Chorkor, Gbegbeisee, Russia, Korle Gonno and many others? The squalor in those areas cannot be described in decent language. When and how many times has the Mayor addressed the worsening water, electricity, rent, housing, health, construction and planning, business and population issues of the City?

He the Mayor has rather arrogated to himself the rights of a mini subsidiary President, going around with a shabby outrider blaring a siren to make way for his luxury vehicle in traffic which is getting worse by the day. How can he feel the unspeakable discomforts of the system and correct them when he seeks exclusive privileges to relieve himself from them?

How come the market women turn our markets into chop bars, with impunity? And how come the the officials who are supposed to prevent this fail to do their work, again with impunity? An does this negligent official not have a superior officer to sanction him/her? If we start prying up the ladder we soon reach irresponsible big men up there who, it appears, the work interferes with the enjoyment of their positions!!!
