Perhaps you should find out a little more about this young man before you discredit him so hurriedly, Togbe. Lets encourage him to be the best he can be and not kill his dream. He is an amazing kid!

Seyram is in Ghana International School and that is the schools standard. GIS do not have BECE as part of their curriculum. I definitely agree with Prof. Forbi, the BECE must be scrapped

Prof will call a person educated if he is able to give the list of the kings of england but fails to list the presidents of Ghana. Such is our mentality, do JHS/SHS products fall short when they travel outside the country for studies? I am an example and many others, we are rather seen to be on top. When you listen to some of these old folks, they just kill the spirit of the young ones. Education is not when someone knows European history and does not know his. It is not when someone can speak english or it is not when the certificates comes from Europe. No wonder the white always laugh at us. Imagine some one doctoral student was surprise to know that there in no telephone code for calling africa, after i reminded him that africa is a continent and not a country and yet we sit hear condemning our own. Imagine this man was a minister of education.

My kids and siblings who wrote the SSCE had to go write the O levels and A levels before we finally got them into school though they were born overseas and only did their Education back home in ghana.
Our education system honestly needs a lot of work to bring it up to standards. There are some fortunate kids who come from intelectual homes and the habit of reading and writing was cultivated into them from infancy, with such kids they would sail through the system because they have back ups at home being the parents and the environment they were brought up in. Seyram attends GIS one of the best schools in the country and from a home where reading, writing and education is paramount. Yes the boy is good and should be encouraged to do more. But we should also bear in mind how many of our BECE schools encourage the young ones and put them to the test or take the time to identify some of these God given gifts and help them grow it? The old system did that...what happened to our school quizzes, singing competitions, reading competition, drawing competition which was a daily activity or even arts and craft time the primary schools where time in the lesson periods was reserved for reading and drawing with active participation by the teachers and all.

the kid could be brilliant at 5 but having a BECE certificate in hand will not take him anywhere, there are a lot of kids out there who couldn't obtain admission to SHS because of their BECE results and are walking around as people who have graduated from school, that is what the minister is talking about, everybody should be allowed to continue to SHS if they want to without any exam/certificate,a proof of completion of JHS(school records, teachers letter etc should be enough), having a few brilliant students in city JHSchools does not make the certificate any worthwhile as a terminal one, please check out arguments before wasting our eyes with this sensational pieces, are you implying that Mawuenyega will become a writer after finishing and obtaining his BECE certificate?????

You do have a valid point--one person's sterling performance in one subject cannot be overgeneralized as indicative of the quality of our educational system.

However, those who doubt 11 year "kidibubs" and "kidibabs" in JSS/SSS can write impeccably are completely wrong. When I taught at Wesley Girls'High School and WA Secondary School, I met many bright students who were not only flawless writers, but also proficient in other subjects---and most of them are now exceptional teachers, professors, lawyers, doctors, engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, homemakers, civil servants, and corporate professionals, and computer gurus---and they all share the same JSS/SSS education which many are so quick to deride.

Let's not forget that there are many students who passed through the so-called golden age or old system who are equally floundering on the massive sea of unemployment.

Finally, the nature of formal education breeds losers and winners. What we need to level the playing field are pathways that absorb those who cannot compete within the formal setup.

So let's celebrate what's working and re-engineer what's not working well.

To stem the tide of unemployment and underemployment in Ghana, we need to rethink and reinstate technical and vocational education/training anchored and driven by entrepreneurship. We also need to create a vibrant private sector that enables and rewards ethical risk taking. Finally, we need to cultivate the spirit of respecting "work" and be willing to start from the bottom.

Pls Seyeram attends GIS- Ghana International School so He is very well taught. Their curiculum is not BECE but O levels, A levels and the British and American curriculums.

The country's educational system needs reforming to produce critical thinkers, entrepreneurs, scientists, etc - the kind that equips people with the skills necessary to drive development. What we have at present perpetuates dependency and inaction.

To be able to reform and develop though, investment must go into the sector. But how can we invest in education, transport, health, energy among others when we live in a kleptocracy superintended by visionless politicians?

God save Ghana.

The value of a certificate is determined by its VALIDITY not what an individual can do within the framework of issuance!

Again, certificates are normative not ipsative and should be looked at in general terms.
