Earthquake hits Iran as Ahmadinejad heads for Ghana

Forty people are feared dead in Iran and seven more in Pakistan after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit near the countries' borders, according to reports from CNN.

President Ahmadinejad is currently on a tour of West Africa and is due to land in Ghana at 5pm local time today.

The epicenter of the quake, which struck at around 3.15pm local time, was about 50 miles north of Saravan, the Iranian Seismological Center reported. A state of emergency has been declared in the area, and rescue workers have been deployed from other provinces.

President Ahmadinejad, who is also Chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), will be in Ghana for a two-day official visit starting with a meeting with President John Dramani Mahama at Flagstaff House tomorrow, according to the government of Ghana's website. The Iranian President has already visited Benin, and will be arriving in Ghana from Niger.

President Ahmadinejad will co-chair a bilateral meeting between the two countries tomorrow, lay a wreath at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and address a public lecture at the Islamic University College in Accra.

The Iranian president is a controversial figure because of his stance on the West, nuclear power and Israel.

Some have questioned his motives for visiting Niger which is rich in uranium, a substance which is used to generate nuclear power.

Can you then explain the bases of President Kufuor opening the Ghana Embassy in Iran at the Ambassadorial level? Undersstand that diplomacy is not for idots as law is not for fools. You talked of execution of women, what about Texas in the the mighty USA or that is alright. Please use the same yard stick to judge all.You claimed you are interested in politics then get the fundamental right : ' any African leader who sells the birth right of his people to the west would be given a red carpet and the extend to which the leader comprimises determines the size of the red carpet. Do you know why Sam Jona was knighted? Yes, it was his actions at the Ashanti Goldfields which made the west, including the Queen, to rake billion of dollars from dealing in Gold. Also know that what you trumpet as Nkrumah's bad deals are actually what makes Ghanaian stand tall today among their African peers. If you have an opprtunity to talk to Kufuor he will be the first to admit that all the respect he enjoyed among his peers was based on the foundation build by Kwame on unflinching support for African Unity. It is no secret for those who were around Kufuor know that at one of the International fora. a cooleague Head of state walk to Kufuor and said ' My country is very grateful to Ghana for what Nkrumah did for us and we shall forever remained grateful. You should have seen Kufuor's face for this is a priceless foreign relations no amount of money can buy. In a nullshell, we are still enjoying Kwame's work. Finally, we give the impression that you have not read the declassified CIA documents on Ghana and what was said about JB Danquah and co. who were ready to sell the souverenth of Ghana for a bowl of potatoes. What is more, was it not this government that planned a group of Pastors to enter Israel for special prayers for the nation? Is our government aware this man Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has vowed publicly to annihilate the nation of Israel from the surface of the earth? May be the intended bilateral ties or whatever raison d'être is for political gains or some economic gains? But at the expense of highly expensive prize the nation stands to pay for many years to come?

I'm getting very nervous with our President's posturing; first his ties with a world renowned gay activist and now a highly controversial world figure? Why? Why the negatives? We don't want to be controlled by the West as we are independent sovereign state but let's face it we cannot antagonize the justifiable interests of the West and find the economic terrain so smooth! I truly shudder to imagine the long-term gains for the nation from a man of his global standing. The project was at where the Kole joins the sea near Kole Bu Hospital. The late Gen Acheampong who had the Kwame Nkruma mentality embarked upon the non allign movement thing. What happened is that all the arab oil producing countries were part of the NAM. So the arabs use their oil as a political tool. They warned that if any country refused to join the NAM, they will not sell oil to that country. This resulted in the annulation of the Israelites project since Israel was and has been an enemy to Arabs. The end result was that the arabs never give Ghana free oil, the Ghanaians purchesed oil at the cought throught prices. There was no NAM prices for whatsoever. Arabs are like black Kobra, if you befrend it and put them in your pocket, they will bite you to your death. That man is coming to pay Mahama the gold money. He will also carry more. He has presidential immunity, no one will search him. A word to a wise is enough.

This is where we sorely miss the Late Prof. He would never have welcomed the leader of a state that sponsors terrorism and a man who calls for the annihilation of the state of Israel. If Ahmadinejad's wishes were carried out, there would have been no Israelis to come to our aid in response to the Melcom disaster of last year. By welcoming him as he did, president Mahama is just announcing to the whole world that he embraces all that he stands for. How totally unfortunate and embarrasing! And the timing of the visit. How despicable!
