The whole mess with the workers is caused by the foolish arrogance of leaders of that FWSC Office. Why does government want the Health Minister to talk to Doctors? It would rather make sense for them to talk to FWSC, afterall, the case of the Doctors is clear: There has been an agreement struck in November 2011. The only party refusing to respect that agreement is FWSC, who is (mis)using public sentiments against the Doctors, instead of giving them their due.

How many Politicians in Ghana are chasing arrears and delayed allowances for over a year now?
It is just annoying arrogance, for any Politician, Minister or whatever, to seek to talk to Doctors, when these same Politicians incidentally find their salaries and allowances reflecting PUNCTUALLY in their Bank accounts

And you give such stupid suggestions too (maybe you deserve to be a dumb politician in Parliament too) Fixed Term Contracts indeed! FYI, the govt STILL wouldn't be able to honor the terms of those contracts and would actually COST the tax paying Ghanaian MORE in the long run because the very moment the doctor is out of the mandatory 'contract', he would have one of 2 choices: Brain Drain or Private Sector (where the NHIS is virtually nonexistent so the consumer would have to pay cash to be seen) so your brilliant FTC would be screwed instantly. The Government Hospitals would be deserted and you'll have to step in with your Superior Economic sense to decide on how exactly you're going to get lecturers and consultants to teach the multitudes of students you propose to teach 'Cuban styles'.
Has it ever occurred to you that More isn't necessarily Better?? How many Cuban-trained doctors hav you met?? And what makes you DREAM that those new doctors will come on the scene to accept the rubbish your government is meting out to us now??

Ghanaian Doctors are mainly trained fully supported by the government with taxpayer's money but it hurts to see them behave the way they do. For them to use their skills as a weapon against the very people who supported their education through their sweat is very wicked, to say the least. People usually forget where they came from or their starting point after they have reached their destination. Many of these Doctors were very poor students whom without the nations support would not have reached anywhere no matter how bright they were academically. The arrogance and the shoulder high attitudes never take anybody anywhere including groups or associations. If these doctors are carrying out all these strikes with political motives behind their minds then Ghana is in trouble not the NDC government they might have thought to sabotage. It doesn't make sense to people when they realize that even doctors can be sensitized to go on strike based on political motivation. Critically analyzed, one could opined that this is not right time for public paid workers to continue forcing for more pay or to put it right, chase the government for monies to be pay at all cost, to the extent that national emergencies in respect of health or human life should be abrogated. After all where are we taking all these riches. Am saying riches because other people do not have one percent of what the doctors enjoy but they might have contributed so much towards their training to be doctors today. And if they would have medical needs to be fixed and doctors would not care then it hurts. Knowing very well that there could not be substitutes to take their job, they stand accused of being nation wreckers and traitors.

I see you need some Extra Education (I'm being magnanimous in assuming you've had Any at all!) FYI, the govt subsidises Every tertiary student's fees, Not just Doctors - and even then, medical students pay the highest amount of fees for the longest time & PAY for the most expensive course books out of their own unsubsidised pockets!! AND also as a result, mandatorily devote their first 2 years out of school to practice ANYWHERE & EVERYWHERE in Ghana as Housemanship & National Service! It's a sign of small-thinking to attribute legitimate labour concerns to politics always instead of sorting them out Once & For All - or maybe your relative (or even You) has been recently blessed with the 3 billion old Cedi windfall so you praise its source WITHOUT THINKING, deeming whatever it does as good!
The Fact is, the Government forced the hand of the GMA to go this far, but I don't see you even mentioning that. Selective Criticism at its Ugly worst!

If you've at least been listening to news, you'll remember that those people sent to train in Cuba were amongst hundreds of students training abroad on Ghana's ticket, appealing to Govt to PAY their allowances cus they were delaying for over a month or so (Not A Sign of a serious Govt when it comes to the worthy doling out of funds, is it). Human as we are, if even you were in their shoes, I'm sure it'll let you start thinking twice about future prospects in Gh when you're left stranded for over a month in a foreign land - besides, do you know how many of them have plans to continue to the US from Cuba?? Those were some of my concerns when that idea came up (and I won't even go into details where most, if not all, of the people selected were from 2 main ethnic groups in Ghana, even the contingent from the Ashanti Region!)
And that's for the Cuban-trained.
Your small-thinking comes in when you see the need to Always attribute the inadequacies and failings in governance as a party to political assassination. Can't you open your eyes for once to see the Truth?? I don't think you have any relative who's a doctor. Maybe getting close to one will inform you at last as to the sacrifice involved on a daily basis, right from medical school.
We have paid our dues and keep investing in our country on a daily basis - it's our country that is letting us down. No doctor LOVES to be on strike but unfortunately, it's the only language that the Ghanaian politician seems to understand..

I strongly urge the ministers after settling the Doctors to come out with a statement to address the grievances of other health sector workers and be seen to be addressing the issue holistically. Government shld be guided by the history of the implementation of the 'Additional Duty Allowance (ADH)' and countless remuneration issues which have always sparked off with even more serious consequences when one party(profession)'s grievances are singled out and addressed and nothing is done to other feuding units just because 'they have not gone on strike'. I urge the labour commission to investigate and also make sure all legitimate payments which are outstanding executed instead of always sitting on the fence and pointing the labour act that organized unions can't go on strike. when one is pushed to the wall,anything is bound to happen. From what we witnessing,had the Doctors not gone on strike,thier grievances would never have been addressed. This is unfortunate and must not be allowed to happen again especially to the physician assistants,Nurses,pharmacists,laboratory workers,Nutrition,Disease Control officers,anesthetics.
Government shld be reminded that Doctors take care of 40% of the annual OPD PER CAPITA while the other 60% is achived thruogh the health centres, clinics and CHPS compounds dotted around the conutry. A word to the "wise is enough".

If that was possible, Mahama would have done that long time ago. Do we have labor laws that the government has to follow? Let the government fire them and they sue the government. Do you think it is in the DARK AGES of AFRC Doctors could be evicted from their bungalows? We are in a Democracy and TENANCY LAW works. How long will it take for the government to get the courts to give the Doctors the number of months to prepare and leave government bungalows? We no more go by the JUNGLE LAWS. That is Democracy. The governments hands are tied by the laws that they have made. The case can go from High Court to Appeals Court and to the SC. Have you considered how many people will die at the emergency rooms, considering how our Drivers alone behave on the roads?
The government itself understands that it owns the Doctors. Why are the NDC doctors among them also on strike? Have you considered that? They are simply all demanding what should be paid them. When the medical director became aware of Mary's heroic act he immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital as he now considered her to be mentally stable. When he went to tell Mary the news he said, "Mary, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged because since you were able to jump in and save the life of another patient, I think you've regained your senses. The bad news is Jim, the patient you saved, hung himself with his bathrobe belt in the bathroom. I am so sorry, but he's dead."
