TORONTO (AP) — Two men were arrested and charged with plotting a terrorist attack against a Canadian passenger train with support from al-Qaida "elements" in Iran, police said Monday.

Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, and Raed Jaser, 35, who live in Montreal and Toronto, were planning to derail a Via Rail passenger train in Toronto but posed no immediate threat, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.

"This is the first known al-Qaida planned attack that we've experienced in Canada," Superintendent Doug Best told a news conference.

RCMP Assistant Commissioner James Malizia said the two men had "direction and guidance" from "al-Qaida elements located in Iran," though there was no reason to think the planned attacks were state-sponsored. Police said the men did not get financial support from al-Qaida, but declined to provide more details.

"It was definitely in the planning stage but not imminent," RCMP chief superintendent Jennifer Strachan said. "We are alleging that these two individuals took steps and conducted activities to initiate a terrorist attack. They watched trains and railways."

Strachan said they were targeting a route, but didn't say if it was a cross border route.

Bruce Riedel, a CIA veteran who is now a Brookings Institution senior fellow, said al-Qaida has had a clandestine presence in Iran since at least 2001 and that neither the terror group nor Tehran speak openly about it.

"The Iranian regime kept some of these elements under house arrest," he said in an email to The Associated Press. "Some probably operate covertly. AQ members often transit Iran traveling between hideouts in Pakistan and Iraq."

Charges against the two men include conspiring to carry out an attack and murder people in association with a terrorist group. Police said the men are not Canadian citizens, but declined to say where they were from or why they were in the country.

Ghanaians should be very careful in forming an alliance with Iran. Even during famine season, it is not Everything you can eat. Some are deadly poisonous.You would die if you eat such things. We are not Prostitutes openning to the highest bidders. We need to respect and uphold our dignity. I was highly flabbergasted at the comments of Kwesi Pratt, hailing praises on Iran as a country. I was equally surprised that Kwesi Pratt on Saturday at Radio Gold Program lambasted Israel and US and all the Allies of US. What I noticed from Kwesi Pratts Speach was that Iran can develop Ghana.He mentioned the Projects Iran is undertaking in Ghana to buttress his points. He was arrousing the Government against the comments Israeli Ambassador to Ghana made. He further attacked Israel about the problems in the Middle East. I noticed he did not say any negative thing about Iran. Ithought Kwesi Pratt knows so much but I realised last Saturday that he need to come down to Middle East and Interview us over here, study the history of Iran and Al quida backings before he talks again.

This is international comments. Kwesi Pratt should be very careful about how he comment on international relational issues.I wonder why Kwesi Pratt should comment on that issue. I think the Government of Ghana should tell us if they have appointed Kwesi Pratts as Government spokes Person incharge of international affairs. The Government should not keep quiet about the behaviour of Kwesi Pratt. He cannot give diplomatic speech on behalf of the country. It is a big disgrace for us Ghanaians here. At the same time, I smell personal motives and gains in the Speech of Kwesi Pratt. No one should in anyway, by either being paid or anticipating to be paid by making an imflamming speech on behalf of the Country. Iran violates human rights, and did not recognise the existence of Israel. Is that a good achievement for Pratt? Kwesi Pratt should learn more about the Middle East and stop making those comments.

We had a mass Casualty. An accident and a gas explosion so everybody who was needed was called. For humane reasons everyone responded. There were professors, trauma surgeons and specialist as well as the Interns who are by the way not national service personnel present to help. There was a lot of support. Purely for humane reasons. I was in theatre till 8pm. One of the explosions who was fighting for his life had two of the most experienced surgeons in theatre operation. A damage control laparotomy and staged orthopaedic procedure. He was sent to ICU. Next a gentleman whose badly injured right arm was operated saving the arm
Next morning this.
What a demoralizing story. Doctors are not Vampires. If doctors practiced the way these Journalist do, we would stand no Chance. I know there are sub-par doctors too though.
