Kumasi: 150 Armed Robbers, Including 8 Women Arrested.

The police in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, have arrested 150 suspected armed robbers. Eight of them were women. The robbers have been terrorizing Residents in the metropolis.

They were arrested in a police swoops in parts of the capital.

Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Augustine Gyenin told journalists at a briefing in Kumasi on March 20, 2013 that the swoops span areas like Adukrom, areas around the Kumasi Airport, Suame, Asafo, Affordable amongst others.

He said the Police retrieved from the robbers “39 assorted passports, 16 rubber stamps, three locally-manufactured pistols, three live ammunitions, three spent cartridges, nine pairs of ladies slippers, three live ammunitions, 97 mobile phones, six machetes, one Ipad, four pairs of scissors, six machetes, three digital cameras, one Del Laptop, one fake dollar note, two pen drives, three digital cameras and amount of 3860 Ghana cedis”.

DCOP Gyenin said the Police also saw a shrine in what he described as the “den” of the robbers where they apparently went to fortify themselves spiritually before embarking on any robbery operation.

Armed Men Storm Kumasi As Residents Run For Dear Life.

A group of armed men on Tuesday night attacked residents of Kumasi, virtually taking over some streets in the metropolis amidst sporadic shootings.

About 30 to 50 half-naked gunmen, some on foot and others on motorbikes fired several warning shots using AK-47 and pump action guns as they laid siege on the helpless residents.

The Hollywood-style action left many vehicles damaged as motorists crashed into each other in their attempt to escape the onslaught which took place at about 7 p.m. Horrified residents were also locked up in their homes for safety.

The incident occurred mainly between the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology [Tech] and Anloga Junction on the main Kumasi-Accra road.

Eye-witnesses believed the robbers were reacting to recent police raids on suspected criminals hiding at the Affordable Housing Project Site at Asokore Mampong.

Many people, including a nurse got injured as they fled the attack.

A traumatized resident, named Maame Birago told Nhyira News she nearly collapsed upon seeing the armed men.

“I was going to the salon to re-touch my hair [and] all of a sudden I heard gun shots and a lot of people were running, they were many, some of them were wearing boxer shorts so I also decided to run for my life and that of my child”.

“I nearly collapsed. I even fell on the floor so I just got up and run for my life,” Maame Birago narrated.

An unidentified student of the Ghana National Academy also described the incident as “horrifying”.

“They were not using magazine made (guns). The sounds of those weapons were different from that of those manufactured locally because I have seen local pistols before,” he recounted.

Meanwhile the Ashanti Regional Police Command say they have arrested over 100 suspected criminals in the past few weeks, with reinforcement from Accra.

Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Augustine Gyening in an interview with Nhyira FM,strongly suspect Tuesday’s attack was a reprisal for police action and resolve to clear the region of miscreants.

This time, the armed men attacked traders at the Kejetia market and robbed them of their wares.

Speaking to Citi News, William Hayford of K-FM in Kumasi reported that the young men numbering about 9 capitalized on the power outage to perpetrate their act.

“We heard gunshots and they were just chasing the traders and other people with knives, guns and other sticks. People were just running helter-skelter seeking for places that they could hide. In fact it was very unbearable.”

He added that “there were gunshots and they were holding cutlasses and others things. They were in groups. In fact the inhabitants are living in total fear.”

Armed robbers who were on motorbikes struck terror in the heart of the Ashanti regional capital when they fired several shots using AK-47 and pump action guns and laid siege on helpless residents.

They left many vehicles damaged as motorists crashed into each other in an attempt to escape the onslaught which took place at about 7 p.m.
