This is a very good article and all politicians must take a clue from it. Learning does not end and leaders must endeavour to improve themselves to enable them rise up to the challenge of promoting development. About the kind of debate that goes on with the influx of media stations in Ghana does not augur well for fruitful and objective analysis. Issues must be progressive in nature and not politicising everything in Ghana.

You're right on the money as usual, Prof. but what really hurts is that the youth are not holding their leaders accountable.
Politicians, Directors, CEO's, Chiefs, Pastors are all getting away with murder and the youth are too busy drinking Alomo bitters and dancing Azonto. It really hurts that today, even tertiary students are only interested in allying themselves with politicians just for their selfish ends.
In years gone by the youth, especially those in tertiary institutions were more united, more objective, more alert, and wielded more influence.
Together, we challenged injustice irrespective of where it was coming from. If any of us went to a hospital, or government department or indeed anywhere else and did not get the appropriate service, we would come together and strongly fight against that. We kept public servants, politicians, and other, including our own lecturers, on their toes. We respected doctors and nurses and professors and chiefs and directors but we would not sit down for them to ride rough-shod over us, and treat us like rubbish.
I remember quite well that apart from first year students, most uni students had single rooms to themselves, compared to 5/6 in a room these days. There's no way we would have accepted that because we knew how to push the government to provide decent education and pay for it as well. We knew that the hard work of our parents and grandparents who produced the cocoa, timber, gold, food, fish and our numerous brothers and sisters in work was able to provide us with decent education.
We demanded that, and mostly, we got it. Today's youth are more interested in Samsung Galaxy 3, and ipads and other silly consumables. They're looking away while the leaders rob us blind. Tweaaaa.

Just take the case of the degradation of our environment by mining and the NDC and NPP and CPP, Reform leaders can't stand together and say NO!
Very soon Burkina leaders would be releasing water from the Barge dam and across Upper East and Northern region, large tracts of land would be flooded and yet not one politician has come up with a solution, for example constructing a dam to collect the water for irrigation, fishing, electricity?
Ghana needs a new type of political leaders that think and act as men and women of thought and action.
The media can help the nation, by simply reducing the coverage of these non serious, corrupt, inept and bankrupt. For example, if a politician or MP does not declare his or her assets, there should be no coverage of his or her activities.

Daniel Pudles on politics
Suddenly there are new faces on our television screens, and new, agitated, indignant voices on the airwaves. Some are old or plummy-toned, some have grey hair, some are young and working class, some are anxious suburban commuters. Many of them are women. It is the raging rows over Ukip, gay marriage, Europe and swivel-eyed loons that have given these people a political presence.
They are noticeable because their presence at the centre of political debate is a novelty. We have grown accustomed to seeing almost all the important issues facing the country debated between groups of urbane, Westminster-based, fortysomething men. This month's eruption of anger over how politics is run has highlighted just how narrow, insulated and unrepresentative our political discussions and our political representation are. It's no wonder that so many people are feeling angry.
Nigel Farage's full-page advertisement in the Daily Telegraph today , accusing the Tories of being run by a "bunch of college kids who've never had a proper job in their lives", tapped cleverly into a vein of Conservative anger. This isn't solely a Tory problem. Its activists and defectors are feeling overlooked, but it's a Labour issue too. "In my time, the Commons has been taken over by the professional political classes," one long-serving MP said to me. "Where are the working classes? Where are the trade unionists? Where are the George Browns or the Ernie Bevins or the people who've had years of experience in other jobs? How does an outsider break in? "
The figures remind us of how startlingly different MPs' backgrounds are to the rest of the country. Fewer than a third of Labour MPs are women, and the Tories only manage a sixth. The Lib Dems, those famously earnest egalitarians, have a disgracefully tiny proportion: one in eight.
MPs do no better on privilege and class. Seven per cent of the nation attends private school. More than half of all Tory MPs did so, as did 40% of the Lib Dems, and 15% of the Labour party. A third of all Tories are or were company directors or executives, an occupation shared with just 0.2% of the population. And whereas 30% of the population are in blue-collar manual jobs, only 5% of MPs come from such a background, down from 15% when Thatcher came to power.
After sex and class, age is the third discriminator. Politics used to be a profession that valued long memories and varied life experience. American politics still does, with almost half its legislators aged over 60. In Britain, where more than a fifth of the population are of pension age, just 17% of MPs are in the same category.
The trouble with the way the Commons operates now is that once MPs arrive, every single one of those existing differences is amplified. The people chosen by party leaders to sit on the frontbenches are, as a group, male, privileged, and relatively young. A high proportion of them, from the party leaders downwards, have worked in political posts for almost their entire careers. On both sides of the house, having an Oxbridge education is a huge advantage. A third of coalition MPs are Oxbridge graduates, but two thirds of the cabinet went there. In just the same way, a sixth of Labour MPs but more than a third of the shadow cabinet went to those two universities.
The stranglehold that a single demographic has over our politics might have looked defensible if the electorate were confident that this group knew what they were doing. That's not so now. The polls show support for all three main parties falling sharply as a general, fearful pessimism settles in. Meanwhile, the rise of a couple of unconventional, overlooked political figures demonstrates just what a mistake it is for party leaders to keep assuming that talent, potential and popular appeal can only be found in a narrow group.
The two politicians who are currently doing most to drive the political agenda, create change and arouse passions are Nigel Farage on the right and Margaret Hodge on the left. They couldn't be more different from the careful, smooth-skinned, smooth-talking male political elite. They are both spirited, fearless, occasionally indiscreet, and engaging. Farage drinks, smokes and charms the Britain that thinks it's been abandoned; Hodge is almost single-handedly using her ruthless intelligence, curiosity and determination to expose the cosy arrangements that have allowed a great swath of giant companies to escape paying tax.
Characters like these aren't rated by either of their respective sides. They're too original, or too old, or the wrong class, or the wrong sex. Margaret Hodge spent the 13 years of Labour government only ever being given junior jobs, because she didn't fit the younger male mould. It was only when she chose her own path by standing for the chairmanship of the public accounts committee that she had the freedom to shine.
Party leaders don't want irreverent, troublesome, freethinking mavericks. Otherwise, why have the very able MPs Gisela Stuart and Andrea Leadsom not been given jobs? They prefer, as do bosses the world over, the chumocracy; people who will defer to and think like them. But the world's too complex and uncomfortable a place for that. Groupthink isn't working, and the electorate can see it. Too many of us look at parliament and feel that people like us are excluded. It's time the bright, the difficult, the grey-haired and the underprivileged were given a voice, not just on the airwaves or on the net, but at the centre of power.

Akosa, like most other local politicians, has held prominent positions in the public domain. Some of them, thanks to President Kufuors irresponsible kindness in dishing out honors to anyone who cared to have one, have even been awarded national honours and so on and so forth.
But lets be serious with ourselves. What sustainable or outstanding achievement have any of them - including Akosa, accomplished? Beyond their unimpressive achievements, they have also shown themselves to be morally and financially corrupt scoundrels who do not deserve an iota of respect from any self-respecting person.
What do you mean by an accomplished Professor and what precisely is it that Akosa has contributed in the field of pathology that other pathologists have not achieved?
Much as I agree that politics in Ghana has been left to the most ignorant, the most corrupt, the most greedy and the most backward elements in our society, he Akosa also falls into that category.
And you Opanin, if I were you, I would put my talents as an itinerant praise-singer to the use of the Black Stars Supporters Union. It would yield more dividends there.

A conversation between a True Believer and a True Skeptic isn’t much of a conversation, really.
What you have is two people or more. (For example on a TV or radio station discussion panel) who are dead-set in their opinions ready to say just about anything to justify those opinions. (i.e. NDC, NPP, CPP, Sports, religion etc)
Such a gathering is not a panel for the exploration of ideas, which could lead to the improvement of the listener’s knowledge. But rather it is a chest-pounding shouting match.
He who can yell the loudest and use the cleverest persuasive linguistic tricks wins.(or rather is seen as haven won the discussion.)
When people talk this way and it is presented as “intelligent conversation” it trains people (the listeners/public) to think that, that’s what intelligent conversation is supposed to sound like.
If they haven’t seen an actual egoless intelligent conversation between people who are actually looking for the truth, they won’t know any better, and therefore cannot progress as a people or nation.
Such pseudo-intelligent conversations are carried out on almost all topics, 24/7 on all of the radio and TV stations here in Ghana, mostly to just fill airtime.

For example from good observation can we count MPs like Dominic Azumah and David Akudago of Garu and Tempane constituencies as polticians as MPs at all. These two have bribed their way through and are only just in Parliament for their own ends. Garu Tempane if a destitue zone so a few cedis per a voter during the primaries paves a way to parliament. Indeed no element os human reasoning is required in this process which does churn out an unreasonalnable MP. A mess in these two constituencies.

Ghanaians have become so used to mediocrity in government that they think that's all they can look forward to. Not so, in our history. There was a time when Ghana was the standard in excellence in Africa, it was known as "Nkrumah's Ghana".
CPP can do it again. We have the men and the women who are distinguished in their fields of expertise. And we have the blueprint for success left to us by Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah. It's way past time to get rid of the two corrupt parties, NDC and NPP, for good.
Forward ever, CPP!

To those uncouth commentators, it is this very attitude and characteristic the good Prof is talking about as reported. Why must you always reduce the substance in matter into abusing the maker of the statement? If you hold a contrary view, can't decently make it without attacking his person and spew falsehood about a patriot like him? Sometime I wonder those of you who come to such platforms cowardly using names and pseudo names that never reveal your identities choose to do so if you have the guts and capacity to trade the very foul things you come here to do. SHAME! You can hate Agyeman Badu Akosa all you can but hey! He has made his mark in the sands of academics and public service NOT only in Ghana but around the globe. Take it or Hate him
