The U.S Bureau of Prisons has stated that ex-Member of Parliament (MP) for Nkoranza North, Eric Amoateng, who is currently doing time in CI Moshannon Valley prison in the USA, for trafficking 136 pounds of heroin, valued at over $5 million, would be released on July 30, 2014.

Judge David G. Tragger, delivered the judgment on December 12, 2007 and sentenced the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ex-MP to a 10-year jail term.

The MP was arrested on December 11, 2005 in the U.S.

Two years ago, ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor thwarted investigations by the Narcotic Controls Board (NACOB) into the assets of Eric Amoateng and Nii Okai Adjei, his accomplice, for the purposes of confiscating them to the state in accordance with PNDC law 236.

Eight months into the administration of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, assets investigations on Eric Amoateng and Nii Okai Adjei have not been concluded, let alone going through the tortuous journey of confiscating them through the court. The terms of reference of the investigations for NACOB included identifying properties of both Eric Amoateng and Nii Okai Adjei who were imprisoned in respect of the heroine.

The investigations, which were earnestly begun by NACOB, were halted by President John Kufuor when he appointed a Minister, who was questioned by NACOB investigators in respect of the arrest of Amoateng, to head the Interior Ministry which supervised NACOB.

Before the investigations were halted, a NACOB report had already located the assets of Nii Okai Adjei, and had indicated that they intended to investigate the assets of Eric Amoateng.

An initial report from NACOB stated that: “So far, three residential properties have been identified to be belonging to Nii Okai Adjei. They are located in Teshie Nungua catchment area. Efforts are being made to travel to Nkoranza to conduct assets investigations on Eric Amoateng. After the identification and location, Narcotic Control Board intends to pursue the assets for confiscation in accordance with PNDC Law 236.”

Nii Okai Adjei, who has already served his prison term, has returned to Ghana to enjoy his properties. Follow-up investigations by NACOB on possible accomplices in Ghana, led them to question a former sitting minister of the previous government, regarding his association with a certain George Owusu, a name which kept coming up in their investigations.

The NACOB investigations had revealed that, that George Owusu, had direct dealings with Eric Amoateng in the drug trade. It emerged that NACOB, following intelligence, interrogated a certain George Owusu, who had shipped ceramics from the US to a foundation established by the said minister.

NACOB, suspected that the George Owusu man could be the one who shipped the heroin on behalf of Amoateng. Before the assets investigations could be concluded, former President Kufuor announced that the minister, who had been officially questioned by Narcotic Board investigators in respect of the Amoateng case, much to his displeasure, had been appointed as the Minister of Interior.

Narcotic Control Board is under the Ministry of Interior.

The investigations into assets were therefore abandoned and the government has since then ended the journey to continue the process of investigations and confiscation of the property of both Eric Amoateng and Nii Okai Adjei.

Not long after the Minister took office, the Interior Ministry announced that five kilos of cocaine in the custody of NACOB being part of the 30kilos seized from the MV Benjamin was missing. The casualties of the missing cocaine incidentally were the officers involved in questioning the Minister in respect of the Amoateng probe.

They were asked to go on leave to pave way for investigations.

Three years on the officers have still not been recalled to office though no report on the missing cocaine has seen the light of the day. Eight months into the NDC government’s administration, the officers are still at home, whist investigations into the assets of both Nii Okai and Eric Amoateng have not been done.

The NDC had insisted on a proper investigation into the Amoateng case.

This, Mr. Ephson did not take lightly, he phoned into the live program and asserted that “no one has the copyright when it comes to loose and stupid talk. He has forgotten, but when he goes back to put on his thinking cap he would know that Graphic published it first”.

“Kofi Jumah, don’t you see Justice Atugubah’s picture in today’s Graphic? You should not buy ‘bofrot’ with it but rather use it to clean your ass,” he fumed.

These exchanges on Adom FM comes on the back of several calls for sanity in our deliberations in the media with the plea by the Asantehene being the latest during a visit to President John Dramani Mahama, and Nana Akufo-Addo, the Flag bearer and the first Petitioner in the 2012 election results dispute in the Supreme Court.

Kalid, I sincerely want you to look at things without tribal lens. First of all, a veep does not automatically become the best choice as flagbearer in any democratic party. Secondly, before you can become a flagbearer of a party like NPP which is very conservative and competitive, you must have a constituency (or support base)within the party. Aliu Mahama did not come from the belly of the party and he didn't have his own support base. In fact, it was Kufuor who made him who he became.

The veep is chosen to help the flagbearer win power or play a some important role in the event that the flagbearer wins. Bawumia was chosen by Nana Addo because of his background as an economist and his youthful appeal, though his northern descent was a strong factor. He is a great asset to the NPP but you will agree with me that before Nana chose him, "nobody" knew him, so to be made a flagbearer of major parties like NPP and NDC is an honour and a favour.

Both Nana and Kufuor have very huge stature within the party. They form the two main factions in the party. True, if Kufuor had given his support to Aliu, there wouldn't have been any Alan Cash and Aliu would have contested Nana Addo but he would still have lost to Nana Addo because Kufuor's love affair with the grassroot had dwindled and Aliu would have shared in that fate as Alan did in 2007. Kufuor didn't back Aliu because he probably had Alan in mind to succeed him long before he made Aliu his running mate. That was his personal choice and not the party's choice so let's all draw the distinction.

This time around if Nana Addo is able to hold his support base he has enjoyed over the last six years, Bawumia is sure to become the next NPP flagbearer as I strongly believe Nana will give him his full blessing to Bawumia. On the other hand, if Nana falls out with the party supporters (esp if he lost the election petition), then Bawumia will fall with him and Alan will scale through. But I don't think Alan will ever become flagbearer because many believe he didn't contribute enough towards the course of Nana Addo in the election . I say so because I've heard it.

So you see the NPP flag bearership is not about your tribe but your contribution, support base and luck. Alan enjoyed support from both within and outside the party but he lost to Nana. Even the NDC feared the prospect of his becoming a flagbearer but surprisingly the NPP won't see that. They elect you in reward for your contribution to the party and not your capacity to win.

In the same vain John Mahama wouldn't have been President if Mills had not died. We know that Ato Ahwoi was preparing his brother Kwesi Ahwoi to succeed Mills but fate changed the possible fortunes of the Ahwois. The Ahwois would have won because they were a power broker in Mills gov't and the NDC as a party. They controlled the NDC media, influenced appointments and even Rawlings had succumbed to their might.

So you see, the issue has nothing to do with tribe but personal interest. I think from the arguments you put forward, you make every northerner look inferior to Akans and NPP and that is not good for the dignity of northerners. After all nobody is born to hate a tribe. You are what you believe yourself to be. Good evening.

It's no wonder Mr Appiah-Ofori has known my feelings and mind about this Bawumia of a guy. When he was answering questions in the witness box, he was nothing but marvelous. I believe, not even the flag bearer of the NPP, the Attorney General, nor the so-called Atuguba, the head of the 'fake' Supreme Court, could have stood the test of the moment and could have excelled themselves so wisely and creditably the way Dr Bawumia did in the full glare of the whole world. Who in the NPP party will have the gut enough to question or oppose what this man Mr Appiah- Ofori has proposed or suggested?

My Ashanti spouse is a die hard NPP, my mother-in-law still has Busia’s picture hanging on her living room wall, LOL! As a matter of fact she was first in queue on election day to vote Nana. An Ashanti friend informed me of his intentions to contest for MP. When I asked, for which party, the response was: “NPP of course, the NPP is we Ashantis party.”

So what the Paapa guy said is the truth. The ethnic groups he mentioned are forming the NDC making the Ashantis together with their Akyem brothers the minority.

Probably if the NPP stop telling others they are not one of them, through statements like “Yen Akanfo” they'll feel like they are welcomed and join them. At present, other ethnic groups don’t feel they belong in the NPP, period!

BTW, after the long lecture you gave me above, the guy above you who calls himself Ofosu Kubi has proved you
wrong, and proved me right.

You obviously read Ofosu Kubi's comments, and instead of responding to him with the same lecture you replied me with, you ignored him and rather responded to the Paapa guy who only responded to that guy. That goes to show you agree with Ofosu Kubi’s comment. You are only pretending.

Like I said, and confirmed by Ofosu Kubi, tani/pepeni will only be used for political gains in the NPP, and the best NPP will make tani/pepeni is VP.

BTW, it would have been the same with anyone from the rest of the ethnic groups too. The fixation with using the northerners is due to the northern votes, which is huge.

And who said that were he to become president, Akufo-Addo would win the next elections to give him two terms? How can people make such simplistic assumptions when they are currently challenging an incumbent that they claim did not win the last elections? Or is there a magic formula that says that once you become president (unless of course you die on the job), you are automatically guaranteed a second term!!!

We should be very careful with our utterances.

I am however not personally surprised at PC Ofori's comments. He has given one the impression that he talks before he thinks, and for an elder statesman, it is not only unfortunate, it is disappointing to say the least.

If the petition goes in NPP's favour, and Nana becomes the President for one or two terms, then after that Dr. Bawumia should be automatically elected the next NPP's flagbearer with Alan Kyeremanten as his running-mate. This will calm the tension within the party, if there is anything of the sort. The NPP must shift gears to balance the regional ethinicity. The evidence is so compelling that, I believe, SC will rule in favour of NADAA/MB/JAKE.

If NPP makes the "stupid' mistake to elect any different person rather than Dr Bawumiah when Akufo Addo decides not to contest for 2016 should they loose the election petition, the party will go into a state of demise without any hope of resurrection. I tell you if Nana Akufo Addo has been made the key witness I do not think he could have acquitted creditably like the way Bawumiah has done.The man should be given the chance to lead Ghana so as to exhibit his economic and intellectual prowess.

Everyone knows that Akufo Addo has personality problems. He is too short and suffers from Napoleonic syndrome; he is an arrogant provoker; at over 70, he is too old (look at the ages of the leaders of all the democracies in the world); and he is a lier and an academic quack. He is, therefore, not qualified or suitable to be a president in Ghana. Any other nominee, such as Bawumia, would have given NPP a better image and a much better chance at the last election.
