Times have evolved and oftentimes we react to the cards that we're dealt with or deal to ourselves. If all of your close relatives have travelled abroad in search of greener pastures, this may be exactly what your aged mom or dad needs. It becomes an option: go back home and do it yourself- which may be unreasonable, or do it the way the West has after many years learned to do.
The question is whether it's being done properly, and not if it apes the whiter man's way. If you want the African way, then by all means leave your comfortable coverts abroad and relocate, but if that is not a realistic option, then look for what suits your individual needs. This situation calls for "individual surgery, but not a universal prescription"

Every old person in Ghana - especially the women always become a witch before they die. That is purely African, and that is EVIL! I even predict that the custom of performing marriage rites will be outdated in 20 years, if not already, b'cos people live together and have children in the full glare of their respective families. We'll just be like dogs, meet a lady and go to the court to marry, then come to inform the parents...Mom and Dad!...I got married this morning! You'll be surprised to hear that the youth today is more ICT savvy than the western world...culture?...it used to be a youth stands up for the elderly in a bus...try it now. Before I established a hotel here in Accra after relocating, I had this idea of establishing a nursing home after observing the trend our society is heading...and yes, I had a big profit motive from those abroad who'll want a professional care for their parents. After all, I would have no financial assistance in building such a facility so it'll be dumb not to have a profit motive. So my brother, if you have an innovative idea come home to realize it and don't be hindered by a fast-faded culture...I almost forgot, while driving by Lapaz near the abrantie spot, I noticed a couple tightly nestled together by the roadside in full glare of everybody and kissing, an unimaginable act just 15 years ago in Ghana...FYI

As a result, I have undertaken a survey of the feasibility ( both home and abroad )of such an enterprise in ghana. The rsult was negative. But, the negativity has not altered my plans in any way. That is why I am so excited to have come acros your Mission Care. Fact is, we need it in the country, no matter how one looks at it. We are in a dynamic world and we must move abrest with the time, all the time. As at now there are many poeple who are aged, frail, sick and some of them, bed-ridden, who need some amount of help to put body and soul together, but no avail. The need for a NURSING HOME FOR THE AGED, IS A FOREGONE CONCLUSION.

Their circumstances may change in future; thereby making it impossible for them to look after you. They may even not survive you - these are the realities of life!!!

I am wondering why some ignoramus are opposing the establishment of this laudable venture. Yes, it is known and accepted worldwide that traditionally, Africans take care of their aged. However, how many of us can truely and confidently admit that "SOMETIMES" we wished we could have done more to our aged parents than what we offer them? It seems that most of us have psyched ourselves to oppose everything novelty. Mrs. Attor is not opposed to our traditonal ways of taking care of our parents. She is just supplementing it to make it better for those who do not have the time and to do what they wished they could have done. Do we want our parents to end up at the Gambaga "WITCHES" village? God forbid. Most of the aged have different kinds of mental disorders and sadly enough, they are branded as witches and wizards. With the inception of such institutions by Mrs. Attor, our parents will have access to good physical, mental, spiritual, and social helps they need before their final departure from this world. Let's rather congratulate her instead of condemnation.

Why do we have to copy everything the white man does ? Travel and talk to these residents in these home and you will find out they width they had our way of life and how we take care of our aging relatives in a home setting .

This is not what we should be imitating. It is just another way of letting people off the hook for taking responsibility for their aged. I doubt if this home will be successful.
