  As a former student of Half Assini Sec School (HASCO Class of '74), i'm compelled to comment on this story...even though this effort to improve facilities at the hospital is commendable, i think it is the responsibility, obligation and duty of the gov't to equip the hospital to the maximum. This is a hospital that serves the whole of the Nzima district, if i'm not mistaken, and so it should be in the position to serve the people to the fullest.If not, patients must be transferred to Takoradi, a distance of about 100 miles, which is the nearest better-equipped hospital. I was in school when the construction of the hospital began. At that time most residents of the area depended on a clinic in Ekpu, a suburb of Half Assini, which did extremely well to serve the people in the area, including Hasco students. In fact, the children of the doctor at the clinic, Dr. Hassan, attended Hasco. One is a diplomat for Ghana presently. Another factor is that the hospital is the last major hospital before crossing into Cote d'Ivoire from the western region and so it behoves on the gov't to equip this hospital for the benefit of the people in the area and travelers to and from cote d'ivoire...this is not even the time for a hospital in the western region of ghana to cry for help considering that the region is where the country's new wealth, the 'black gold' is concentrated. Ghana's oil is in the western region and in the district of Half Assini and so why should the people of the area lack a well-equipped and well-staffed hospital. I remember during my school days in the 70s, we,students, could not swim in the half assini sea whenever we left campus (without exeat, by the way) to the beach because the sea and the beach sand had been contaminated by coal tar...they were always black...one could not even walk the beach...and so it was no surprise to me and many Hasco students and the people of nzima when a major discovery of oil was made in the area...the government must appeal (or compel?) the oil companies operating there to finance the half assini hospital which will also benefit the oil workers. Half Assini deserves a state of the art and well-staffed hospital now that billions of dollars from oil is derived from there. The multi- national companies operating there should be able to help the hospital.
