National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Kwabena Agyei, has accused elements within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of masterminding Tuesday’s fire outbreak at Makola No. 2 market in Accra.
Though Dr. Adjei could not drop any name to buttress his claim, he was emphatic that the NPP cannot absolve itself from blame.
The Makola No. 2 market was on Tuesday night gutted by fire. It is the fifth major inferno recorded in Accra in less than two months.
The fire, according report, destroyed over 400 shops and several properties. Some government officials and individuals have alleged that arson could be the cause of the fires due to the intensity and the increase in the number of market fires.
Deputy Information Minister, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, told the media the president is concerned about this development, stressing that stringent measures have been adopted to arrest the situation.
Deputy Trade Minister and Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, Nii Lantey Vanderpuije is of the opinion that saboteurs are behind recent market fires in the country.
“I don’t believe this one is a natural occurrence, five fires all in markets within one month? I don’t believe so,” he furiously stated.
Speaking to an Accra based television station at the scene, the NDC chairman was emphatic that elements of the NPP could be behind the fire outbreaks.
Against that backdrop, Dr Kwabena Adjei stressed that the NDC government will fight tooth and nail to apprehend the culprits of these dastardly acts.
“This country belongs to all of us. For our children and our children’s children; and if they have anything at all, this is not the way to go about it.
“But I do hope that they are not responsible…I want to warn all of us, NDC people, NPP people, everybody, that the democracy we are enjoying is the best that we can have anywhere, and they should not destroy it,” he advised.
