Kwame Nkrumah was the only leader in Ghana who imprisoned all political opponents including children (ask Boye-Boe) and tortured them to death and he was so wicked that he even denied them decent burial by the relatives.

He had the best opportunity to carry the country ahead of all other african countries in all fields but failed miserably.His concern was always on the independence of other african countries.The next to Nkrumah to have opportunities was Mills but for his personal health problems the children with sharp teeth took over and derailed his moves.He saw everything but was too weak to take any meaningful action. The Osagyefo (Liberator) was the only leader to never have acquired luxury cars and mansions, kickbacks from state projects and self-profiting hidden businesses. Nkrumah's happiness came - not from material acquisitions - but from helping his people in Ghana and elsewhere in the African continent and diaspora to be free and prosperous. And to this end, he sacrificed everything: his studies abroad, his family, and finally his very own life itself.

It is a great insult actually for Nyaho-Tamakloe to compare Kufuor with the Osagyefo!

If that is what he meant, then he needs to be educated that Nkrumah did not operate in isolation of certain principles and ideology. If he Nyaho Tamakloe thinks that they the NPP should emulate and follow the exemplary achievements of Nkrumah, then it is not hard to go and look for those principles and adopt them. Are the chickens coming home to roost?

Then again how can one compare Kufuor to Nkrumah? How? It is a laughable suggestion.

I do think that Kufuor was/is a good leader but how can you compare him to the man (Nkrumah) who accomplished one of history's greatest feats of liberating the entire Black race from over 500 years of oppression and colonial dictatorship from the friends of Kufuor and the NPP?

Kwame Nkrumah is one of history's greatest statesmen and achievers. For Africa and the Blackman - at least those who have, thanks to Nkrumah, managed to exorcised themselves from mental slavery, he is without doubt the greatest ever.

These two men are the only pillars under whose administration Ghana saw some modicum of development but i think Kuffour by far did better than Kwame Nkrumah. I'm saying this because in analyzing the achievements of the two men one also has to factor into consideration the times in which both men ruled the country.

Nkrumah came right after colonization at a time in which the country had enormous resources with a population of only 3million, no foreign debt that had become an albatross around our neck, economy on sound footing etc. Nkrumah inherited an economically vibrant Ghana from the Colonial masters, not so with Kuffour. Kuffour took over from Rawlings Military dictatorship of 19years. Prior to Rawlings the country had been badly managed by military dictator after military dictator and the problem was exacerbated by Rawlings 19yr rule. It was amazing that by the second term of Kuffour he had manage to turn Ghana into a middle-income economy with several social programs designed to help the masses--NHIS,Mass metr Transport, Free JHS, the discovery of Oil in commercial quantities, etc. So, in my view, if you do a critical comparative analysis between Nkrumah and Kuffour, Kuffour wins hands down. The man is the best thing that ever happened to Ghana,period! If he had stayed on longer than the 8yrs he would have become the Ghana's Lee Kwan Yew.

Kwame Nkrumah even proposed that the CPP and UP form a national Party, that was also opposed by the terrorists in the UP. Kwame Nkrumah built hundreds of factories, schools and state enterprises in all the regions of Ghana so that there would be equal social development across the country. What did the Danquah-Busia terrorists do after they ganged up with other terrorists around the world to overthrow Nkrumah? They either sold or collapsed all those institutions.

Today, unless you come to Accra, you will be left out of development opportunities.

It is unforgivable for any sane person to follow the Danquah-Busia gang today after all the misery they have caused this country. For crying out loud, they are even worse than the NDC.

The second factor is what normally affects all shallow analysts to always think of the past as the "good old days".
As Nkrumah and almost all the adults who lived in his era are now dead, it is more likely to gloss over his mistakes unlike the leaders of modern Ghana.
Nobody can take anything away from the achievements of Nkrumah as the true founder of Ghana. But the truth is that, today's Ghana is more sophisticated, more democratic and freer than Nkrumah's Ghana. It is therefore not going to be possible to find a leader of today's Ghana like Nkrumah. Nevertheless all the leaders of democratic Ghana have their own peculiar greatness. A few examples here will do.
JJ Rawlings in spite of all his shortfalls, had the vision to lay a very solid foundation for democracy to thrive in Ghana - Nkrumah could not do this.
Kufour had the vision to implement the National Health Insurance scheme and the school feeding programme as a stimulus to develop the Ghanaian human resource.
Attah Mills had the vision to break the cycle of persecuting political opponents hence his accolade "asomdwehene".
John Mahama has just started his leadership but it is obvious he has set his focus on taking Ghana's infrastructural development to greater heights.

Second, lets then ask how much did the colonial powers invest in our land and how much wealth did they take out!

It is only a pathetic boot-licker of slavery and colonialism who will fawn over his very oppressors and exploiters and bandy around the measly sum of 380 british pounds as some sort of achievement. Nevertheless, we can actually see with our own bloody eyes what Nkrumah did with paltry sum left by the British colonialists. Nkrumah did more in his short period of governance than all the centuries the colonialists combined spent on our land plundering our resources without accounting to anybody.

There hasn't been any gold mined in Britain since the Roman era when a trifle little bit was found in Wales. But Wikipedia states: "The gold exported to Britain in the 1850s paid all her foreign debts and helped lay the foundation of her enormous commercial expansion in the latter half of the century."

In my opinion, President Mahama has started very poorly, without any vision at all except fulfilling the so-called Better Ghana Agenda of Mills! Certain actions by him, such as the pre-occupation with sending pastors to Israel and the appointment of the beleagured impostor to the Anlo Awoamefia post, Patrick Agboba, arraigned before an Accra Fast Track Court, to the Council of State, has shown him to be a person who lacks intuitive judgement, a pre-requisite for a visionary leadership. A visionary leader must be able to see into the future and plan accordingly towards that. Now, what the heck was he thinking when he took such ill-thought of actions??

On the previous leaders, I agree with others who said none is incomparable to Nkrumah. None! Ankrah, Afrifa and Busia were some of the most dim-witted reactionary leaders we ever had. Their inspiration was a previous status quo. School projects were stopped, factories near completion closed down, newly opened ones sold off, etc.

Kutu and his cohorts including Akuffo started with some promise but quickly sank Ghana into the abyss of debauchery and outright lechery when kalabule reigned supreme yet unknown in Ghana. They were the worst leaders we ever had.

Rawlings came in and aroused as much expectation and hope as Nkrumah did, being hailed as Junior Jesus. But he has not a clue as to how to achieve his pro-people, populist rhetoric. But in persona and ideals, he is a conservative with a limited vision of restoring a mythical moral order, after which everything else would fall into shape. When that plan failed, he fell on the Terrible Twins for salvation from the low levels and shortages by mid-1983. What we saw in the shape of SAP was a right-wing economic orthodoxy which even the proponents cannot implement in the West, not to mention Latin America, where it was first tried. Nothing at all visionary about that! Education was neglected to stupendous levels. No new state sponsored housing schemes, as even under Kutu, who built Dansoman, started Adenta, etc! State enterprises started by the CPP were sold on the cheap to foreigners or allowed to be run down and shut down! Support for private businesses and support (subsidies) for agric inputs withdrawn except for cocoa! The Asians were doing exactly the opposite! In spite of a modicum of econ. recovery, living standards did not even climb to 1960s levels! Failure to reform the existing corrupted institutions of state to implement their agenda, doing that thru parallel bodies in the Castle, etc, and the restoration of const'nal order and same unreformed insts. meant the re-emergence of the old bad corrupt ways, as the "bureaubrats" and "technorats" made up for lost ground rent under the rule of the PNDC.

In came Kufuor with HIPC, promising to implement same SAP policies, since the NPP claimed it was Busia's stillborn baby anyway. Believers in the state being the c'ttee for managing the affairs of the whole bourgeoisie, they set out to use their incumbency to enrich themselves, as one of their key ideologues I was close to said must be done, just as the Indians did! Corruption is ok, except when the proceeds are sent abroad, and not invested in the country, as Indians reportedly do! After all, as one of their key ideologues, Prof. Maxwell Owusu, tried to instill in us in his Pol. Science lecture in Legon, corruption is simply the lubricant which oils the wheels of bureaucracy. Phew! From what they did, looting left and right, I'd say they achieved a modicum of success in living their dreams. K4s, family, for instance, is now rich beyond their wildest dream! To say that such a person comes close to Nkrumah is such an insult to Nkrumah's memory!

Nobody has come close to Nkrumah among the lot and I doubt very much if Mahama will. He simply hasn't got what it takes. After all, he was an accidental President who rode to power on the back of Mills demise and Mills Better Ghana agenda. What's his agenda? Hobnobbing with the likes of convicts like Agboba and kowtowing to dubious pastors proclaiming salvation from an imaginary god in this age of science and technology when people are searching for the Higgs Particle? Tweah!

Mr Kuffour has benefitted from his long association with politics which informed most of his decisions. This appear to Dr Nyaho Tamakloe that he was close to Dr. Nkrumah. Mr Kuffour has learned from the mistakes and wisdom of the past, which he utilised somehow to project himself. From this background, I expected Mr Kuffour to exemplify lots more wisdom in his style of leadership. He was vindictive, nepotic and corrupt which cannot be said about Dr Nkrumah. His decisions were very much informed about personal and group benefit of the group he led.
Mr Kuffour was not a ''national'' figure as was known of Dr Nkrumah. He was silently wicked which many people did not know about him. A clear example of this character was the way some operatives of the NDC were hounded especially Mr Tsatsu Tsikata. It was also due to the hatred for his predecessor, President Rawlings.

He cared for the African citizen and integrated development of Africa second to none.
If he was a dictator, he was also a saint.
We hope John Dramani Mahama will excel Nkrumah by implementing Nkrumah's blueprint for the development of Africa where there will be freedom of speech, movement of persons, goods, services and capital and development: that takes leadership to happen and Mahama has got that leadership to lead Africa to the promised land of honey and milk for all in the context of technology which the Osagyefo lacked.
John Mahama can learn from China to flood Ghana and Africa with foreign investors (regulated new scramble for Africa)

It's difficult to discern accurately our national leadership effectiveness due to the unequal circumstances characterizing their respective tenures.But the truth still is that neither Nkrumah and all that came after him had any tenable vision for our dear country that has God-endowed resources and yet many of her citizenry wallow in abject poverty.
What our first leader did unmistakably leave behind is the horrible template of governance that government knows what is best for all of us.
