I understand the anger about the illegal mining, and I hope this can be settled in a peaceful way between governments according to the policy and law. I agree that one should respect to others' country and culture.

Like how we have expelled the Chinese with a minimal body count- no matter what their government mouthpiece of a media says.

In China their cities are so polluted that in many they are covered in green smog that makes their people sick with cancer, and the slightest dissent against the powerful can land you in jail or worse. Let us not hate the ordinary Chinese, rather let us pity them. We are poorer than them sure materially, but in terms of quality of life the ordinary Ghanaian is still much richer and freer than them. The Chinese model cannot be our model, it is far too life-denying.

The Chinese economic expansion is, as this editorial states, harsh and exploitative, even to its own nation. But I can't think of any examples of sustained economic development that weren't in most respects utterly brutal (Scandinavia maybe?).

Economic development is a process of systematic exploitation of all human and natural resources. It's not pretty. The West specializes in exploiting the resources of non-white foreign countries for its own benefit, whereas Eurasian nations (really, internal empires) like Russia prefer to exploit themselves.

The US and China, as we see, do both. That's what is meant by the word "superpower."

I don't know if Africans have the stomach to engage in a Chinese-style "self-exploitation" for the sake of its own economic growth, especially as it will hugely benefit a cadre of insiders and render a great many people just expendable labor. But Africa is already being done up by the West and China, and does not benefit from current arrangements.

If you read some of the English language Chinese newspapers, and newspapers with a pro-China tilt Ghana has taken a lot of flack for protecting the rights of its citizens (i.e. to non-polluted water and arable land) against the armed Chinese thugs/miners.
