Policy-makers please take note of the decline in the economically active population and its implications.

It could signal a reducing tax base and lower tax revenue with time, and an increasing dependent population.

Sankofa, you may be theoretically right but Ghana doesn't operate a social welfare system (at least not in practice) so I don't see how the trend could signal an increasingly dependent population.

Moreover, Ghana's population in 1984 was 12million of which 82.5% is 9.9million. In 2010, Ghana's population was 24million of which 71.1% is 17miilion. This means that (assuming most of the active workforce work in the formal sector and are therefore taxed) the tax base has actually increased in absolute terms. Now considering that government spending in Ghana takes no account of the size of the population, I'd say the government now is actually better off with respect to having more than a few more quid from tax revenue at it's disposal.

This is typical nonesence. If these numbers were higher, were would this people be working? I guess even this is a blessing to the country. Most of these numbers that we are talking about now has found themselves in slf employment and even most of them are gone abroad, to look for greener pasture.
Now its up to the government, I mean these on coming corupt governments to care for the remaing incapeble and vlunerable people for them to take care of.Use the incoming Oil cash recive to take care oif the remaing unemploy of the nation, and stop importing people from China, Nigeria, liberia etc.
Stop taking loans with crazy strings attached, to come in and live on the very loans you have taking from their country as cheao labour force and get the remaing citizens to work. God bless Ghana our only land of hope.

I don't know if anyone else can see this but to me that's an astounding drop and shows how much are cultural and social values are changing. The "girl child education" campaigns I saw on TV and heard on radio when I was a kid seem to have paid off.

What's more, more males are actually warming up to the idea of being homemakers while their spouses/partners work. That's a great achievement in redefining our traditional gender stereotypes and I think Ghana deserves a kudos in this respect. We are growing as a nation!
