I BELIEVE AS A NATION IF WE TAKE OUT PERSONALITIES AND DEAL WITH PRINCIPLES WE WILL BE BETTER OFF. IS THE ACTION BY THOSE INVITED CONTEMPTUOUS BY LAW? THEN LET THE LAW HAVE ITS WAY.

It is also symptomatic of how political party elites in Ghana and Africa worm their way into the confidences of persons perceived as likely to ascend to power positions for purposes of eventual personal economic gain at the expense of the generality of the mass of Party members and the Nation which every President swears to serve under the Constitution...

Is the Supreme COurt now above criticism or insults? The comments allegedly made by these individuals may be stupid and nonsensical but we should defend their right to say it. The day that idiotic comments are banned is the day that free sppech dies.
If these individuals have made statements that may be classified as preaching hate or inciting violence, then they should be charged and tried in a High Court. The Supreme Court is becoming a threat to free speech in Ghana.

Free speech has its limits, and once it flops over trenches undermining the coherence of a nation-state, it must be curbed, and no amount of putative and sterile adlibs from self-seeking champions of freedom will prevent the need to inject a sense of decorum in the exercise of free speech. Arthur K, your rigmarole on this issue is a misguided, intellectual over-reach.

What kind of law do we practice in Ghana? What sort of planet does the Ghana Judiciary inhabit. First of all these persons have been subpoenaed to appear before the Supreme Court by a bench warrant. The same bench that feels maligned by the comments these persons are alleged to have made will be the prosecutors, judge and jury. Telling from the question which was put before Sammy Awuku to "explain yourself" , it is pretty obvious there is no justifiable charge sheet prepared to address this so called contempt of court statements.

If the Chief Justice beliefs that the statements are prejudicial to the hearing or that the comments about the judges are contemptible, she should prepare the appropriate indictment and charge them with that civil infringement. That matter may have to be heard at a High Court.

It surely cannot be right or be deemed due process of law for a court at once constituted to hear an election petition also be offended and concurrently bolt unto its proceedigs a contempt of court case. The persons are not party to the case at hand and whatever ignorant or superfluous statements they are alleged to have made with regard to the hearing have to be considered as inconsequential and treated as such.

What is the duties of the SC as prescribed by the constitution? The SC interpreters constitutional disputes and also serves as the final authority on all court or judicial issues. That will mean that if somebody goes to steal at the SC, even though the members are judges, it will not be their responsibility to adjudicate the theft but refer it to a magistrate court. The SC will become relevant only if it picks up the case after appeal court. The problem with Ghana is that the so called intellectuals and professional have been deceptive. We have a similar case in parliament, even though the constitution is clear that MPs are to make laws and determine the proper use of the nation's resources by approving the budget and ensuring that the monies were used properly. But the MPs have decided to compete with the local assemblies by creating the MP common fund in complete contravention of the constitution. Our intellectuals and politicians have become used to doing what they like and rationalize over it. Until we adhere strictly to the constitution and stop listing to these self-serving lawyers and politicians we shall always be going backwards. The SC has no business inviting commentators to bully them. If they think there is the need for public education on certain matters they should go ahead and recommend that to the right body, and if some people have committed contempt of court they should be charged in the appropriate court not in the final court.
