Read the report very carefully. We must find a way to balance the interest of 600 workers against that of the wide spectrum of industries rendered incapacitated for lack of power. It is only when industries operate at full capacity that they can produce more and pay premium rate for their power usage, and pay more taxes too to sustain the economy. Remember that local industries also have thousands of workers on their payrolls who are now being adversely impacted by erractic power supply.

VALCO was near obsolete in 1986. The Ghana Government bought the remaining shareholding for $2m and they thought it was a steal. Govt. could have asked Alcoa, the owners who took over when Kaiser went down, for $50million to take VALCO off their hands and Alcoa would have agreed. The reason was because it will cost them nearly as much per year just keeping it without producing anything. The eonomies of scale were no longer in VALCO and the cost per pound of aluminium from VALCO was not economic. Otherwise why should Alcoa, the largest aluminium manufacturer in the world want to sell it. We are so inept and refuse to seek advise from those who do know that we accepted to give Alcoa $2m for VALCO. It now operates inefficiently because the people running it know little about primary aluminium production. Does VALCO produce accounts to show whether they are profitable? As to the mines, if they packed up and left the mines would start to rot within 5years because we would not know what to do.

THE world bank over estimated cost of electricity subsidy to valco; cost-benefit does not take into account social benefit and country's search to improve its manufacturing base. Over supply in the aluminium industry is the bases for the world bank report but if we look at over supply alone then ghana as a nation would not have any industries because they are countries that can supply all that we need to our detriment. Keep valco running, remove waste from the electricity supply and go after illegal connection.

Valco's agreement with the Ghana Govt was one the best foreign direct investment in Ghana. We have messed it up and we must say sorry to 'Yanks'. The US Ambassador met the Minister of Energy and offered their help, are we prepared this time round to obey our vows? What the World Bank is suggesting is not the cause of our energy problems. Mr Minister, do we need energy? If 'yes' then what is our national strategy(short, medium and long term)?

Thanks to the Akilakpa Sawyer committee set up by Jerry to bring some some sanity to bear. Do you also know the amount of concessions given to VALCO? The end is not come because of renegotiation but the writing showed immediately previous government decided to take over the plant. When kaiser was managing the plant, the slightest drop of water level at Akosombo dam below the minimum level is met with power cut to VALCO and a resultant redundancy. In other to save face, the Government is making everything possible to keep going at the detriment of other areas.
